I'm glad to see this deal get done, it shows the Redskins do care about resigning their quality players instead of just dumping them to the street for new faces.
I think they care now. They didn't the past few years. I'm still pist at letting A. Pierce get away to the Giants. So I say good move not only for the team, but good for the morale in the locker room. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
The key is keeping the team together
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
I'm a little surprised but I'm glad we locked him up.
I wonder if this means we'll go back to more "Redskins football" next year. Just keep pounding it up the middle with our 1-2 punch. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
in this day and age, keeping two solid backs is key... keeping one of our own is a start in the right direction. betts' pass-catching ability from the backfield is impressive under saunders' playbook- this offense will expand with portis back next season.
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
i know this is not what anyone wants to hear but i think this is the beginning of another overhaul. dont get mad but portis out for picks or a trade for byron leftwich and campbell sits..... i hope not but i feel it coming
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
espn says the deal is 5 years 11 million dollars. he is definitely worth that amount, great deal

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
It's good to see Betts decided to stay, and I'm happy for him. I also hope between now and next season he works at becoming a better blocker. This move also serves as a security blanket in the event Portis's rehab has a setback. Six months of rehab is going to put him at June before he'll be able to go full bore.

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Here's a rough estimate of how Betts' contract will play out based on the ESPN article:
(thousands) 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Salary $585 $585 $1000 $1500 $2000 Sign Bon $700 $700 $700 $700 $700 Rost Bon $0 $2000 $0 $0 $0 Cap Hit $1285 $3285 $1700 $2200 $2700 Total $11.17M |

Oh please - Gibbs loves Portis. No way he's going anywhere. That's just crazy talk. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
For the record I think this a good deal for us. I think he could have gotten more if he waited to hit the open market. But it seems like he left some money on the table in order to stay a Redskin, and that's a refreshing change.
"Most importantly, he wanted to stay with the Redskins and head coach Joe Gibbs. He's comfortable working with Clinton Portis and being part of a one-two running punch. The 5-10, 222-pound back is in his fifth season with the team. He was a second-round choice in 2002." |

That would be absurdly, profoundly stupid, and I just can't imagine that happening. JC hasn't played poorly, why would this happen? |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
oh god, not this again
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
As long as we see Clinton on 3rd downs next year, I'm satified.

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
worth the money. he's getting paid like an high-level backup. i bet other GMs would LOVE betts for that price.
happy happy. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Congrats Betts. He got a 5 year $10 million contract. Where is TJ Duckett's extension???

He'll get it... with another team. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Big thumbs up on this deal for me.
He deserves it. Nice job Ladell! |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Very impressed if this is the deal. A contract that makes sense and while I'm not a huge Betts fan he is certainly worth this money.

Show me Sellers on third down. I don't care if he's lead blocking for Clinton or pulverizing dudes while coincidentally holding onto the football, just show me the Walla Walla and take it to the promised land! |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
About time we keep one of our own instead of overpaying for some other teams players. Gibbs should have stayed with Betts and kept Bailey and our second rounder we gave away.

as we have stated numerous times, betts was injured most of his earlier years and couldnt have played many games keeping bailey was not an option, he wanted out and if we kept him he would have been a bad team player |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Wow, this actually seems like a reasonable deal for the Skins. Wonder how Snyder screwed that up? Could it be the beginning of a new era? The "market value" era?
Glad to hear Betts is sticking around. Taking the burden of Portis should let him do what he needs to do on the field without feeling like he has to carry the entire offense on his back. |

My feelings exactly. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
I wasn't a huge fan till he started actually running at people on occasion. Prior to getting the start lately, he always seemed confused when he hit the line. Hopefully something has "clicked" for him and he'll still be able to make big contributions next year.

Are you serious??? Portis for Leftwich? Campell sits? What are you smoking?? I know the Skins have done some cockeyed moves over the years, but I say .... Step away from the pipe!!! |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Yes, I think that the Betts signing gives them the flexibility to trade Portis for a quarterback, if they decide that Campbell has failed his trial run by the end of the year. You could go with a Betts-Duckett combination. If Campbell passes, then Duckett is out.
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
great move by the skins, best front office move in forever, signing one of our own and not overpaying him, when was the last time that happenned?
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
I almost drove my car off the road when I heard the terms of this deal. Only the redskins would give this kind of deal to a guy that has not even had 1 complete season as a top flight back. I congratulate Betts for getting this contract but IMO this is another example of why the redskins continue to flounder as an NFL bottom dweller.

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
That's great he got an extension, but what bout TJ Duckett???? We gave up a round pick for him and we are not gonna resign him????? WTF is that???
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Portis isn't going anywhere, let's just stop with that nonsense. Teams need two quality backs these days. Betts should see an increased load next year and with the banging Portis takes that's a good thing. Betts' deal is very cap friendly as well. Not sure where any negativity is coming from in that regard but oh well, some are never satisfied.

This shouldn't come as any sort of newsflash or anything, but TJ wasn't brought here as a long term solution. Betts is a better all around player. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Sorry guys, I didn't have time to read through all 5 pages...have the terms of this deal been disclosed yet?
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
5 years $11M
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
i think we have/had more pressing needs than RB. another bad use of money for the skins.
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
5 years $11M
That's really not that bad. I thought we would open our pocketbooks, but I am sure it is back loaded so he will only hit maybe 1 mil ish towards the cap next year. So he'll be around for 3 years or so, meaning we'll get the best of his career if Portis gets injured again. That's a cheap SOLID backup if you ask me. If Betts left next year, we would all be worried if Portis went down, now we don't have to. Let's not forget, Betts is a great receiver out of the backfield. It was a good move. |

You don't think a back up RB is a pressing need?????? Sorry man, back rb's are used every day. How many RB's can play every down of every game? None! |
