I grew up all my life with my parents smoking. They made sure me and my brother did not. My mom still smokes and is (honestly) in the hospital with pneumonia and dehydration. Obviously not caused by the cigaretts but it's not helping her breathing for her to trash her lungs.

My wife is allergic to everything under the sun to include cigarett smoke. Her eyes also will turn red, get itchy, and sometimes swollen. My kids are in the same situation. Thankfully when I got married and had X-Mas at my house my mother decided on her own to take her cigaretts outside. I was overwhelmed by the respect my mother showed by going outside in the rain and smoking because of the no smoking in my house rules. I even went as far as to tell her she didn't have to go outside cause of the rain and she said no she was going.

On the flip side I feel sorry for the smokers, or atleast the older generations that got all caught up in the commercialization of cigaretts. Now they are hooked and instead of finding a better way to help them quit big government would prefer to treat them like outcasts and make them smoke outside no matter what the weather. Insurance companies would prefer to offer lower insurance to building that have a no smoking policy, and in some states making it illegal to even smoke outside in public.

What are there a bunch of people bored off their asses that have nothing better to do other then stir up trouble, or try to make a name for themselves? What will be next? Alcohol damages the liver so perhaps we should make it illegal to drink (again). Caffine hypes people up so maybe soda's should be illegal and perhaps we can takle coffie also.

You are missing the point boss, smoking harms folks around them those that yo ujust mention only harm the user.

Trying to defend smokers is a waste of breath.

My wife printed up a ton of wallet size photos of my son and she is going to tape each one to ever pack in their "supply draw". They drive to VA once a month to stock up because they are too expensive in MD.

For the record I never got a response to my email from earlier in the week, SHOCKER!

I want to add in response to that article; we once let my FIL and BIL borrow our for Wii for like a week, when the Wii came back I just throw out the controls they were literally yellow, it was sick. They got wind of it and actually paid me back but still it was gross.
There's some solid evidence they're NOT smoking outside, away from your son.
did you read the email I wrote to her? it is at the top of this page. I think it was very fair and both me and my wfie will follow up with a actually conversation. Since it is her mom she may go it alone but Ifelt Iwant my voice to be heard. My wife has begged my MIL to stop even when she was a child so I was hoping maybe if someone outside of their immediate family said hey this is actually hurting your grandson it might be the thing to put her and the rest of them over the edge to quit.
Here's something for your in-laws to think about: I was the same as your wife with my Mom, she smoked her whole life.....until she died at 71 of a smoking-related heart attack. Other than the smoking she was perfectly healthy. Another close family member on my wife's side passed at 58 from a smoking related heart attack, same situation, smoked all her life, otherwise perfectly healthy. Now my MIL, just turned 65, has advanced emphasyma, COPD, and untreateable lung cancer. If she survives until Halloween it will be a gift from God. Again, outside of the smoking related issues, perfectly healthy.

While all this is sad by itself, it has occured over a five year period and has exposed our son to close family members dying that a teenager shouldn't have to experience. I'm sure your in-laws love your son more than anything.....ask them if they want him to experience losing them long before he should.

If they're serious about trying to quit, Chantix has worked for a couple of folks I know. Expensive, but so are $ 5+ per pack cigs. Good luck. I wish you and your family the best.

Re: F....Cigarettes

I'm not asking for anyones pitty I simply said I feel sorry for them. On a side note I understand the second hand smoke issue. But I feel that if I wanted to open up a bar with the understanding that it's for smokers but other may attend I should not be hindered by the state gov. telling my business can't have smokers ...inside. It's one thing to go to the bar which is set up for everyone and people having to put up with second hand smoke, but a business should be able to cater to smokers and with the knowledge that it caters to smokers not force them to smoke outside.

I hope I see the day that when smoking is finally banned, these groups turn their attention to alcohol. Alcohol kills also folks. A lot faster then smoking does. Between drunk drivers and pickled livers I can honestly see this being the next hurdle. But don't think your going to have the smokers simpathy when more of our rights start being eroded for the "better cause."

Whats my answer for the issue? I don't know. when I was younger I suggested business having a designated smoking area. The smokers got it..... they got pushed outside into the weather, rain, snow, heat, or cold. Now looking for the cheaper insurance business are taking on no smoking on the property period. I guess this forces the smoker to decide if he wants to keep his job or not, especially if he does not want to quit smoking. But to tell business that they can't open a business catering to smokers to give them a place to eat, or a bar to hang out, or simply a lounge (these tobacco shops), is obserd.

I'll gladly pay the higher insurances and open a bar for smokers..... but the gov. says no because of laws passed saying no smoking indoors period.

No one is going to feel sorry for smokers. They can eat shit and die and this is coming from a former 3.5 pack a week smoker.
^ I have dogs at my house they don't, the only other difference between the homes is the cigs.
Also think outside the box. My wife who is allergic to everything, not only was effected by my parents smoking, but we had animals as well. I know you said there is not difference but it might also be the type of dog. Some dogs carry more dander then others.

then there was the issue that my parents lived out in the country and my wife was allergic to Oak trees most of all but tree's, grass, and hay. In the country it's pollen city. My wife could only visit for about an hour to an hour and a half.

Touche, good for you. I hope your feeling a lot healthier. All I'm saying is that the cigarett companies made a big push while our grandparents and parents were growing up. Heck I remember the commercials during cartoons right after school. The tobacco companies were only attacked within the last 20 yrs so now the smokers that lived through the "big push" campaigns are now older, maybe not getting around as well, and we are saying "take your shit outside." What a way to treat the elderly smokers. First you screw up their lives telling them cigaretts won't harm you, and when they start their hooked, and when they realized or the cigarett companies were finally taken to court they found out they were lied to and learned of the list of 400+ ingredients put into cigaretts. Now were saying screw you again take your crap outside into the bad weather.

No I don't feel sorry for the young smokers. We are a more educated society. But our elderly should be treated better. :Smoker:

I am a smoker (Day 3 without a cigarette) and can not defend smokers in any way, I know it is wrong, it is gross, I am glad they banned smoking in Bars/Restaurants***, and seeing somone smoke is gross.

If you smell smoke inside it is not because its on their clothes, unless they go outside to smoke in a phone booth. If the Wii controller is discolored than they are all smoking inside, that is a lot of smoke and is not transfering from their hands.

Don't feel bad approaching them, they know they need to quit, they may get defensive because they are addicts, but they still know they need to quit. Throwing numbers and stats won't sway them more than likely, but helping them find a way to quit that works for them would mean more. Even though trying to help will probably illicit a defensive reaction at first.

Just my $.02.

Don't get me wrong. I think smoking is horrid. I see what it's done to my mother. I'm not advocating smoking. All I'm saying is the gov is supposed to be a neutral body and instead they have sided with the non smokers and passed laws against smoking indoors and in some states smoking outside in public. I have the same issue with gun control and abortion. I hope the gov does not take sides with any one religious denomination cause this country was founded on freadom of religion. and before I get slammed for probably being a muslim simpathizer and thinking it's ok for the temple to be erected with 2 blocks of ground zero in NY... I'm not. I think although they should have the right, it's very distastefull on the muslim's part to want to erect a temple so close to the site. The next question is would it be ok if it was 4 blocks away? 8 blocks? How far away is ok? you know... since we are a country of religious freedom.

You post confuses me. If the remote was discolored (yellow) then I would presume the controlers are inside collecting all the burnt tar. Outside there would be too much wind and oxygen and the carbon would be too deluted. Anyone could presume the yellow is coming off their hands via transfer not so much from the cigaretts themselves.

I was not making fun of anyone by saying touche. Anyone who quites smoking good for you honestly. but there are mill of people who most likely don't want to quit this expensive habit, but more importantly they are hooked. For some people it's easier to quit then others.

I'll be honest, god forbid if anyone decides to attack Coca-Cola or Pepsi. lol. I drink soda breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in between. Is it bad for me... it's not helping my liver or kidneys. But I can relate with the smokers. Tell me I'll die if I keep drinking soda and I would continue drinking soda.

To preface my point I am extremely conservative and could go on for pages about each of those subjects, but will try and keep it short and to the point.

Smoking is not a protected right by the Constitution, so the states or the people have a right to create a law that would ban or limit such actions as long as it does not violate its own laws.

Gun ownership is protected by the Constitution so no state can pass a law banning such, legally.

The debate about abortion is not if abortion should be legal, but about when life is created. Pro-Life = @ conception; Pro-Choice = @ birth. The point at which life is created and murder is commited is not clearly defined so the debate will continue making lawyers and lobbyists tons of cash for years to come.

As long as the Muslim religous center is built within the confines of the law there is no reason to stop it. I am actually disgusted by so-called conservatives saying anything otherwise. I do think that the location is tasteless , but that does not mean much.

For the record the reason the state bans smoking in a bar is becasue of the workers. If you are a non-smoking bartender why should you be forced to possible getting lung cancer.

Everyone has the right to work in a safe environment, well at least on paper.

I am saying they are smoking inside, and that transfer to that degree is nearly impossible. Unless the are smokin Winston non-filters and have not bathed in years.

If NC banned Diet MT. Dew I would move. But I don't think our rights to drink soda in public will be restricted, since we are not infringing on anyone else right not to drink soda. If we drank by spraying it in the air and catching it our mouths, and found out that second hand soda was causing health issues in others that didn't want to come in contact with soda, than we might need worry.

That's like saying if you don't want to be hit by a drunk driver on new years eve, stay at home. Why should my plans have to change because you want to poison yourself and potentially those around you?

Very good point, But if you dont like associating with smokers wouldnt it make sense to not surround yourself around them. Restaurants and social gathering places could ban smoking all day, but you will always have smokers and that is something that nonsmokers are going to have to deal with.

You know ironically my closest friends in college were all smokers, I was the only non-smoker. Had a cigarette once, didn't like it, moved on. But again why should I have to suffer because you want to harm yourself and potentially others?

What about a child who doesn't have a choice?

In MD they banned smoking in bars/restaurants and since they did that I have rarely run into second hand smoke.

I think the owners of the bar should have the choice and have to post smoking or non smoking signs on the door (if that is even needed). Let the consumers choose. I did smoke and I don't understand why there where not more non smoking bars and restaurants.

I think the reason you wont find too many non smoking bars and restaurants is because all the nonsmokers were hanging out with all the smokers.
