Thats too hard of a comparison in my mind, they were drafted too far apart..... pure player wise though it would be a tough decision for me.

It just seems to me youre more likely to get your heart broke if you take a guy that has all the potential in the world but lacks the maturity to use it.

Sam Bradford, is now "guaranteed" 50million dollars. If i was his age and had that kind of money i dont know if i could be a football workaholic and focus all my attention on making sure i live up to my contract. I would most likely have acted like Russell or Leinart....

Exactly, when you find your guy you go draft him... All this talk about BPA, but in reality that would put Cam Newton/Ryan Mallett ahead of him who both don't fit our scheme.. In fact Mallett would absolutely fail as a Shanahan QB.

I have no doubt in my mind that if Shanny takes the time to evaluate Gabbert, he'll see that he's the best option behind Luck.. The issue is that San Francisco, Buffalo, Arizona, and maybe even Cincinnati will see the same thing, but pick ahead of us.

This might even put us in a position to move up and take Nick Fairley.. Who is without a doubt one of the most dominant defensive lineman I've seen in years.

Yep, I knew that. His dad played at WV when in lived in Maryland and was a pretty good QB, nothing like his son, but still darn good. Just so you know, a lot of the experts are comparing Luck to Elway which they didn't with Bradford or Ryan.

I have nothing but respect for Luck, but I feel the comparison to Elway is lazy. It's based mainly on them both attending Stanford.

Luck looks more like Ryan to me than Elway. Elway was about as heralded as could be...Luck is maybe one small notch below. Luck reminds me of Freeman a little too with his size and mobility. They are a similar package.

Luck and Elway is a bad comparison..

It may seem to easy to say Tom Brady is a better one, but really he is. Tom Brady is on top of everybody in the NFL right now, Andrew Luck is the equivalent in college. He handles the pocket flawlessly! His mobility when nobody is open is perfect, his play action roll out perfect, his deep ball perfect, his football IQ brilliant.. You just can't say anything negative about this guy other than his one performance that he looked human against Oregon (a la Brady vs. the Browns).

Andrew Luck will not be taken 1st overall because of a team desperate to sell some tickets and wants to take the best quarterback regardless of if he's a top 5 talent (Sanchez, I would argue Stafford). Andrew Luck will be taken because if he's anything short of a 5 time pro-bowler I think 70% of scouts would be shocked.

Andrew Luck is three times the collegiate player Matt Ryan was. Josh Freeman is a big body guy who can just truck (prime McNabb), don't get me wrong he's a warrior.. but he's got absolutely nothing on Andrew Luck.

Luck and Elway may not play the same, but their talent as a quarterback coming out of Stanford isn't far off.

It excites me way too much to imagine Mike Shanahan with a young Andrew Luck ready to learn and take in everything he can from the guy who lead his idol to two super bowls. It really is too good to be true isn't it?

I don't agree with you in regards to your Matthew Stafford comparison. When he came out even though he wasn't regarded as the can't miss prospect of the next decade, he was widely regarded as the best quarterback in the draft and a no doubt top 5 pick. Nobody saw his injury issues coming, he didn't have much of an injury history coming out of college, what's happened to him in the NFL has just been unfortunate. I still think when healthy he can be a great quarterback in the NFL.

We have in the past gone this way with Jason Campbell, Patrick Ramsey, Jeff George, Heath Shuler, Gus Forotte. This way does not work out in my mind, especially for the Redskins.
I want a Brady, Montana, Brees type of QB. I.E. uber smart with a burning desire to win, and smart enough to figure out how to. The will power and work ethic elevates this type of QB's game to Top notch even though he is of inferior athletic ability or physical stature.

Yeah i like hard wokers / smart football players a lot more then gifted athletes, espicially when it comes to the QB position. I just thought of Brian Brohm who is super smart, hard worker but cant get anything done. It might be a little early to write him off though.

I think it was a smart move for him to come out early because i think he was way over rated. Also its been a really long time that ive seen a youngr QB sell out in the way Sanchez has. Hes pretty much taken every and any endorsement thrown at him in the last 2 years. In my eyes that type of mentality is a red flag. I'm not putting anything NFL related into this. I can remember to this day when he played Florida in his final year and I knew after that game he wasn't a #1 overall guy. He was the reason they lost the game with his terrible accuracy. I'll give him his arm, but I will take credit for being very adamant in different forums/etc that Matthew Stafford will not be the savior the Lions are looking for. He had AJ Green, Knowshon Moreno and Mohamed Massaquoi. Give me three better weapons for a #1 overall QB in recent history.

Don't get me wrong though, he's a first round quarterback in any draft, but he can thank his huge arm, size and pro style offense in college for being taken #1. (Three huge positives, but as we continue to see just not enough)

It came down to intangibles with Sanchez. Had everything you want in the locker room, worked hard, great leader, but it was always obvious he didn't have that breathtaking throw or control of his offense.

I would agree though, he certainly loves his endorsements.. but as a Canadian he's got absolutely nothing on Sidney Crosby. I can't buy bread without this guys face being plastered all over it.

As far as Matthew Stafford goes, I think he gets an incomplete grade right now. He looked much improved this year up until he got hurt... again. There in lies the issue. Can they keep him healthy? He'll only be 23 next season, so he has time to work on strengthening his shoulders and rehabbing. Not only that, but Detroit actually seems to getting it right by drafting good players. I wish we could be like the Lions... that's soooo sad.

i think he is very overrated. could be an ok qb in the pros, i just dont get why espn is on his jock. 16 tds 9 interceptions in a heavy passing offense. stats dropped big time from last year. he lost his main receiver from last year. he doesnt face a lot of pressure and runs a pure spread offense. he can run a little bit. just a gut feeling from me that he wont pan out

I won't debate whether or not he was worth the #1 overall selection, I didn't watch him play much in college and my knowledge of him is limited to his college highlights and what he did at the combine. But look at the way he's played when healthy since joining the Lions, he's flashed enough potential to show why they took him #1, he's got a decent supporting cast around him, and pretty much the only thing holding him back is his inability to stay healthy. If he stays healthy next year and beyond that I think he'll show enough to be worthy of being called the Lions' franchise quarterback.

If Gabbert goes to a team in Round 1, there will be lots of pressure to play him right away - - and I really think he needs at least a year or two on the sidelines and on the practice field to be ready to play at the NFL level.

For those who lust for Luck to be a Redskin, the path to that end is clear and simple. The Skins need to go 1-15 next year and secure the #1 overall pick in the 2012 draft. Best way to do that might be to sign JaMarcus Russell... ;)

Does anyone really want the Skins to go 1-15 in order to draft Andrew Luck? How miserable would that be? If that were to happen, Luck would be coming to a downtrodden team that has forgotten how to compete and win. Mike Shanahan would [U]never[/U] let any team of his sink that low.

One of the most encouraging signs I saw in the Skins this past season was that they didn't quit. The Skins may have lost 10 games but they were in most of them to the end. They were just outmanned. That type of competitive spirit needs to be cultivated, not destroyed. This offseason, we'll add players who better fit our new offense and our new defense than some of the players we have now and we'll improve.

We may see the Skins draft a QB this season or next, but it won't be Andrew Luck. I like Blaine Gabbert but I have no idea which QB's the Skins like in this year's draft class. By April, we may add Gabbert or Newton, or Locker, or Mallet, or whomever to our roster but we'll have no shot at Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft.

One must also remember that many things can change a player's draft stock. Last year, Locker was considered the best qb prospect by the majority. He decides to return to school and has a bad year. Well, his stock has since dropped obviously. Luck could end up having a terrible year or get injured causing his stock to drop as well. I don't wish that for him mind you, I'm just saying that many things can change the outlook of the draft.

Hell, you never know, Danny O'Brien might blow up this year and get some big time attention. I kinda think the kid is gonna be a good one.
