Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
I am with most of you on Rod and that we may be better off without him but one of the main delays in a move being made is that Rod wants that one season to inflate his value before he is a free agent next year. This could be a great thing for our beloved skins.
Let him have the one year, at a low cap cost to do his best for the big dollars. Can this really hurt us?
YES. Unless you like 4th-tier talent being the so-called #1 receiver. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
If we cant trade him, and have the cap room to keep him; I say keep him. With it being a contract year, I would be willing to bet he would perform pretty well. Then we will just be smart enough to let him go after that. Him and Moss would be neck and neck as #1's if we dont draft anyone, but I just dont think we should let him walk.
GARDNER IS NOT A #1 RECEIVER!!!!!!!! HE WOULD NOT START ON PENN STATE. WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SEE THIS? |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
I guess that's why he consistantly stayed after practice and caught an extra 100-200 balls a day, that shitty work ethic of his. Rod Gardner isn't as bad as the media makes him look. He makes the easy balls look hard, and the hard balls look easy.
You are probably one of those "fans" that think Ramsey is the next Montana, right? |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Last year was a disappointment for Moss because of injuries, but he STILL had a much better season than Gardner, and he also played in a conservative offense.
It is true that Gardner was on a wide open offense. Boy did he have all the opportunity in the world to show himself last year. You guys make Gardner out to be some horrible player. Yes, he drops balls. He has good speed for a man of his size, and he can make some big plays. He can get YAC, and is better than Moss, Patten, and McCants. If we can trade him, fine. I understand wanting to move on because seeing the spot where he was drafted makes him a bust. However, I bet he'd be at the top of the depth chart. There's a reason he's been a starter for this team for a while. There looks to be a good chance that we won't get either Edwards or Williams, so that leaves our options at WR in the draft as very slim. Gibbs doesn't seem to like McCants. So we may have to keep Gardner. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Skinz - It was reported by the Washington Post that he was doing that. I think Ramsey has potential and played well when given the oppurtunity. I also realize when you take away all of a man's receivers and replace them it takes time for chemistry to form.
Ramsey has a gun, and once his head catches up with his arm - he'll be great. They need to cater the offense to do two things: focus on Portis's strengths (quick cut and go), and Ramsey's strength (less short passes more intermediate to long passes. 7-15 yard completions. |

His head will never catch up to his "arm." You really need to start watching the games instead of watching ESPN highlights. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
You'd be a great GM, anyone ever tell you that? You're looking like we have the next Jerry Rice to replace him.
|
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Because by watching games I can tell that his head will never catch up with his arm? He's far from a stupid guy, I have a feeling you didn't exactly get into Tulane.

Actually, I went to a real Top 25 academic college. You Ramsey fanatics will all be proved wrong once again this upcoming season. Too bad it will be another "throw-away" year for the Redskins if he starts the season. We had better find someone that can win games quickly. |

Shame you didn't stay past lunch time. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Again, the same old argument about Gardner.
Is he horrible, no. Is he a true #1, a go-to guy? Definitely no. Is he a good #2? That's debateable. He's had 4 years to prove himself, he had one good season, and 3 so-so seasons. Time to move on, end of discussion. |

Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
i wouldn't mind i don't like the guy but that is only cause he doesn't seem very loyal. but i wouldn't mind at all and he is one of the better number 2s as long as he doesn't drop the ball. I mean he is the best WR on the market, and if another team was realeasing him some of us would want to pick him up. We got the guy i don't like giving him 2 mil but he could help in some games. patten moss and gardner. seems all good to me, 5 wide, y not! patten moss, gardner, jacobs mcCants. all very capable. BUT IF WE DO KEEP HIM NO PICKING UP ANY WR IN THE DRAFT!!

deasel is prolly more realistic than that, i am just guessing though:) , seriously just read more than just one opinion before you assume. when u assume u make an ASS out of U and ME just words of advise:food-smil not meant at all to be negitive |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Gardner has also had 3 very inconsistent and very unspectacular seasons.
Seems like the pro-Gardner people blow that off more often than the anti-Gardner people blow off the one 1000 yard season he had. He had one good season out of 4. Wow, I'm really impressed, even in baseball that's a crappy percentage. When is it time to move on? I'd say 4 seasons is more than enough time to properly evaluate a player. Last year was a disappointment for Moss because of injuries, but he STILL had a much better season than Gardner, and he also played in a conservative offense.
Gardner has the physical size to be a prototypical receiver. Moss has the exact opposite. But Moss makes the most of it everytime he touches the ball. Gardner might touch the ball but not catch it. How often, or ever, did Gardner make a great catch, and make a play after catching the ball. Never. Sometime he would have an amazing catch, but then go down right away. Even if Gardner learned to catch, in my opinion that just makes him an average receiver. He just hasnt shown that he wants to make big plays with the ball. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
I'm one of the few Gardner fans on this site. My reasoning has always been the following. I prefer to look at the future instead of the past. RG's not the fastest but I've always felt he has the skills to be really solid in the NFL. His biggest problem is the dropped balls, but of all the weaknesses to have I think dropped balls is by far the easiest to correct.
But in the end it comes down to this. I would have thought that Gardner was the perfect receiver for Gibbs' system. But if Gibbs doesn't think he can be fixed, or doesn't like his work ethic, or doesn't view him as a "Redskin", or whatever...then I agree that's it time for Rod to move on. I think anything less than a 3rd rounder is insulting, but the problem is Gardner doesn't want a long-term deal at his current market value. So no team is gonna give up much if anything for a guy they can't even sign. If we can't get a 3rd I would go with the "let him play out his contract year for us" plan, except I think this bridge may have been burned beyond repair. In hindsight I think the Skins made a mistake by allowing Rod to seek a trade. By showing our hand we took away all of our leverage. I'd still vote to keep him if we can't get a 3rd, but we might not even be able to afford him (thanks $9MDB). |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Gardner's not a bad reciever, but not a #1 either, but i think if we get into a good system we wont even have a #1. Look how the pats spreat the ball around, with givens, patten, brown, and that other guy who i cant remember. Who would be their #1? Hell ive asked that to pats fans (my in-laws are from RI) and they cant even tell me. It makes the entire secondary play ball, not just two corners covering and one safety offering pass support when you've got a roster full of good (not great) recievers.
I think Gardner would be a good situational #1, and a great guy to put in the slot, especially if we're not going to have him back last year... let him take the Ray Lewis shots across the middle. |

Did Gardner break up with you? :biggthump |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
CrazyCanuck:
I agree with you. Once again the strategic thinking of the FO has been off the mark. Now that it is obvious that Gardner is not a highly valued commodity here in Washington, why should any team cough up a high draft pick to get a guy who will be a free agent after next year. If he does well, he can get a big offer and leave the team that trades for him now. If he sucks, then fans will bitch about giving up a high draft pick. Yet again, the strategic genius of the FO comes to the fore. Maybe they'll cut Brunell and re-sign Jeff George. He's available, you know... |

I'd like to keep him if we can't get a third rounder. And I do agree we lost leverage in trade negotiations by letting Rod seek a trade. Unfortunately, however, few (if any) teams were going to seek a trade for Gardner. Thus, if you don't want the guy on the team and he doesn't want to be on the team, perhaps the only way to salvage something out of the bad situation is to allow the player to seek a trade. Granted, knowledge of player-team disgruntlement and a desire to seek a trade weakens your bargaining position, but I'm not sure that there's another way to get a draft pick. |
Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?
Maybe if no one wants him, Gibbs will work him into his offensive plans and he'll have something to prove for his last year so that A) we get some value out of him and B) he can make some more money for himself. It might be a win-win situation.
