He doesn't want to sign for a cheap deal, just like he didn't want to get the franchise tag. IMO if he indeed tore another pec there is no chance he gets any sort of long term deal. He is setting him self up for another one year prove it deal, thankfully it won't be here.
Rak has not produced sacks as would be hoped or expected and is not elite. On the other hand, I am not "thankful" that it looks like a solid player will be moving on in the prime of his career. If it weren't for salary issues/expectations, Rak would be seen as a solid, but not spectacular, contributor to the defense. If Rak were a former 7th round pick, we would be hoping to hold onto him at a reasonable price. I suspect that, just like D-Hall, Rak's absence will be felt beyond his immediate production. |

I don't buy the arguement that he absence will make a huge impact on our defense. The year we lost him in 2012 in game 2 to another peck muscle tear our team went on a nice run and won the division. His loss hurt more in the short term than it did over the course of the season. I was expecting Rak to be putting up some big numbers this year based on the addition of pass rushing specialist Coach Baker coming into the fold. We have seen his presence make an impact on Kerrigan, but Rak is still the same dude. It will be interesting to see what they do moving forward... Rob Jackson is still unsigned. And I hate to say it but Rob would have made the play last week in the ARI game |

Hall and we're hurting bad in passing defense now that he's out. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
Time to move on for both sides. Good dude and all but he's just not the difference maker we need him to be.
|
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I don't see why we couldn't replicate with Rak what was recently done with DHall. Let Rak test the open market -- he won't find big money with his combination of injury history and lack of production (stats-wise, at least) this season, and I wouldn't mind at all having him back but for a lot less money. If he comes in on a one year deal and tears it up (on the field I mean, not another pec), then we can consider something longer term. But I think he is surely better than anyone else we can plug in right now who is already on the squad or that we can pick up without spending a lot of $, and I would rather see that spent on O-Line and safety help where we are by far more thin. And if he isn't willing to come down money-wise, then we part ways and wish him well. I think the guy has not lived up to expectations, but I don't question his heart (his brains, maybe, for not realizing or pursing any move to the QB other than a bull rush).

Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
Just read that Orakpo's pec injury is most likely a season ender. Surprise surprise.

Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
At the end of the year, put a reasonable multi-year offer in front of him. (not sure what the number might be but certainly, 2nd tier DE money). If he takes it, great. If not, see ya.
I don't mind having him back. I do mind the constant "Should we have him back" debate. Decide what he's worth to the team over the next 4 years, put the offer out there, if he can do better, good for him. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
Torn, in my eyes, sadly he's done here

Cut him loose, wish him well, and allocate those funds toward keeping Ryan Kerrigan. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
So now that it is official, can we sign him cheap? Lol

I would agrue that Hall is more important to the defense than Rak was. |

It's official -- done for the year. Disappointing all around.
Trent Murphy, step on up. Redskins' Brian Orakpo (torn pectoral) headed to IR - NFL.com |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I'd at least make a modest offer to Rak, but if someone wants to pay him more so be it.
|
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I'm ready to move on. I'm not sure what he does well. At this point he's a league average type player who thinks he's some dynamo pass-rusher...who gets hurts too much. We've seen his ceiling and can get it from a younger guy for much less. Or close to it.
|
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I would have to say his career with the Skins most probably over. Mainly for financial reasons.

Which actually may be in play now that he tore his pec again. Hopefully Rex Ryan gets fired and we can hire him to right this defensive mess we have. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
In 2012 Kerrigan's numbers dropped without Orakpo on the other side. Is there a concern about added focus on Kerrigan or is that going to be a non-issue?

Until Murphy proves himself I think it's a legit concern. |

I would say he is done. Guy can't stay healthy unfortunately. Farewell 1/2 Sackpo.

Yup. Haven't seen the impact out of Murphy yet that I hoped for. Now would be a great time for him to shine, it would show that we have one less problem to worry about for next year. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I'm still amazed at how many fanboys think that Rak is our best defensive player...

What is your idea of a "modest" contract? Just curious at the numbers involved. Me, I said last year 9.5mil/yr was about all I would be willing to offer, but I overshot that by a lot. I wouldn't offer him anything over 5.5-6mil/yr to be honest. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
90% chance Orakpo is gone next year.
70% chance he signs in the NFC East. 50% chance he burns us at some point in the future. |

Who, due to injury, have missed the majority of two of the last four years? I guess 5M/year. I dunno. I was thinking 4 yrs @ 4m/yr, 8M SB or something along those lines. I have no clue if that is realistic or a vast overpayment. |

... and to be capable, he needs to show (1) an ability to cover in space; and (2) that he can keep folks from consistently doubling Kerrigan and/or Hatcher. By the end of the year, if Murphy can win some 1 on 1's as a rusher and handle the coverage duties of an OLB in a 3-4 system w/o being a liability, Rak is pretty much superfluous. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
As usual, excellent analysis by Keim:
Assessing Brian Orakpo's Washington Redskins career - ESPN
Rushing the passer is about more than sacks, and Orakpo influences the pass rush. But when you're being paid $11.45 million for one season and when you want to be paid even more, then you have to do more than set up others. You have to make game-changing plays. . . . This is a playmakers' league, and Orakpo didn't make enough plays. He played the run well and didn't have any coverage mishaps, though he dropped an easy interception versus Arizona. . . . In his first five seasons, Orakpo intercepted one pass and forced six fumbles (while recording 39.5 sacks). Some linebackers being paid the kind of money Orakpo seeks have forced the same number of turnovers in one season. . . . He was a good player. The Redskins needed him to be great.
|

I'm with you on Murphy. He's not shown it yet, and I have my doubts he ever will. I think he lacks the athletic ability to get the job done on the right side. He's better coming up the middle than on the sides. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
Can't overpay for production, good teams would walk away. He is making superstar money on the 1 year tender. We'd have been a lot better off it that money was spent on 2 or 3 decent players. Maybe he will end up in DeAngelo Hall territory, where no one is interested in him except us.

And frankly he has had something to prove the entire time he has been here, and has never lived up to the 13th pick that was used on him, albeit mainly to injury. I remember watching Orakpo and our current QB playing at Texas and wishing some way some how the Redskins would draft him. Then on draft day Al Davis saw Derius Heyward Bey's 40 time and the rest is history. Unfortunately now Orakpo has torn a pec for the third time in his sixth season. I would love to have Orakpo here next year, it would be amazing. However the only way I am keeping him here is with a vet min deal with bonuses on the back end. If he wants any more than that which I'm sure he will, I'll pass. |

The most immediate concern with Murphy is coverage. Romo and his Frankenstein TE will eat us alive this week. Murphy didn't cover in college and his first match up is against a dude that makes veterans look bad. |
Re: Is Brian Orakpo career as a Redskin possibly over
I still can't see the FO's logic in letting Rob Jackson go only to take a chance on a draft pick, most 3-4 OLBs struggle rookie season. Jackson stepped in and made an impact at every opportunity.
Meanwhile RT doesn't get upgraded. BA hasn't been great in the personnel decisions and maybe the biggest thing holding team back. That and RG's injuries. |
