Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
5 yrs, 11 Million?
Wow, thats pretty cheap if you ask me. It also shows Betts likes Washington and wants to stay with the team. It could say that despite the crappy season, this team might not be too bad to be around after all. |

Wow, thats pretty cheap if you ask me. It also shows Betts likes Washington and wants to stay with the team.
It is cheap. He could have easily made more in the free agent market. We probably convinced him that he was already a vital part of the offense as a backup, and that would continue if he stayed. Plus, who wouldn't want to play in front of the best fans, and franchise in football? :D |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
A good deal--we need the one-two (think Priest and Larry in KC), and it's nice to see us keep a guy instead of going outside. Plus, Ladell has run well the last few weeks. I'm still a bit worried about his durability, and we need to figure out short-yardage, given that this means no Duckett.

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
If Gibbs puts 5 running backs on the depth chart "again" next year.... God help us all.

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
That's really not that bad. I thought we would open our pocketbooks, but I am sure it is back loaded so he will only hit maybe 1 mil ish towards the cap next year. So he'll be around for 3 years or so, meaning we'll get the best of his career if Portis gets injured again. That's a cheap SOLID backup if you ask me. If Betts left next year, we would all be worried if Portis went down, now we don't have to.
Let's not forget, Betts is a great receiver out of the backfield. It was a good move.
I don't like it, too much guranteed money for a guy who has a tendency to get hurt. Do you guys realize how much guranteed money is in this deal? Here is a short quote from ESPN: "Betts, 28, signed a five-year extension Friday worth $11 million, but the key was in the early payout of the deal. He got $3.5 million in signing bonus money this year and a $2 million roster bonus in 2007. With half of the money going to him early, Betts figured it was the best of all worlds. " I like Betts, but freakin 5.5 million in guaranteed money? C'mon, we have some pressing needs on defense. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Portis isn't going anywhere, let's just stop with that nonsense. Teams need two quality backs these days. Betts should see an increased load next year and with the banging Portis takes that's a good thing. Betts' deal is very cap friendly as well. Not sure where any negativity is coming from in that regard but oh well, some are never satisfied.
I disagree only from the standpoint that 5.5 mil in guranteed money for a guy who usually has injury problems is too much. I like him, just not at that price. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
I still do not understand what could have possibly been going through the FO's mind when they decided to throw a 3 round pick at Duckett. Did they just decide to scrap the 2007 Draft altogether?

Signing could say something about the optimism inside the locker room. Hopefully we'll rally around it, and come into next season with some swagger. Hopefully the Bett's signing pays off. I agree with the general consensus that it's a great bang for the buck. He's a solid back, a true redskins... etc. THOSE are the kinds of players that deserve bigger contracts. Not AA, or some other huge name free agents. Gotta give the front office a nod on this one. |

Yep. This front office has made a commitment....a commitment to free agency. They simply do not have any talent in the scouting and drafting dep't, thus, the draft is not important to them. |

what do you think he would have gotten on the open market?? |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
this is great! it was a no brainer, the skins got something right!
|
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
just saw the interview with betts on why he re-signed. really like this guy, he said his role was going to be bigger next year than earlier this year when portis was healthy. i liek this. like i said earlier. i expect 15-25 carries per game from portis, and 10-20 per game for betts, kinda similar to how pittsburgh used bettis and parker. great deal for a deserving guy

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Now we have to get Dockery--it seems we're less active on that front. I would have thought that Dock was at least (if not more) important to the skins. Wonder why the hesitation?

From the Post: Gibbs said the team has been in talks with its other remaining prominent potential free agent, starting guard Derrick Dockery, but was unsure if a deal would be completed before free agency. "You never know what course it's going to take," Gibbs said |

It's very possible he's seeking Chris Samuels or Randy Thomas type numbers, and of course he's not worth it. I just have a hunch he's looking for massive numbers. That could explain it. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
Dock might be interested in testing the FA waters and who can blame him?
The good news for us is there are a handful of pretty solid guards that should hit the open market this offseason if Dock were to leave. |
Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
what do you think he would have gotten on the open market??
Exactly, he would have gotten PAID by somebody else in dire need of a RB, and regardless of what anyone here thinks of Ladell, his career numbers and performance filling in for Portis this season would have been enough to get him big bucks -- at least Lamont Jordan '05 bucks, which was 5 years, $27 million, including $11m guaranteed. Betts is having a better year this season than Jordan ever had before bolting for Oaktown. So, Betts leaves and we're gonna find a quality, reliable RB2 who's a "True Redskin" like Joe needs, understands the offense, and is liked and respected by his teammates, for less than what we paid Betts? |

then again, i really cant believe someone paid jordan that kind of money, so maybe you are right

Re: Ladell Betts contract extension
This shouldn't come as any sort of newsflash or anything, but TJ wasn't brought here as a long term solution.
Betts is a better all around player.
Only the resdkins would give away what they did for a player that they did not even play. This team is in such desperate need of a GM its hard to fathom. |
