Re: Are we a playoff team?
I dont see how we can be at this point in the season. I think we struggle way to much on offense to try and figure out who or what kind of team we are offensively. We CAN NOT run the football. Our magnificant staff has to figure out a way to move the ball. Our defense has been playing really good football until the end of the game when they exposed the weak part of that defense (deep middle) our corners, for the life of me, I can not explain why they play so freaking far off the receivers when they only need to move the ball 10 to 15 yards to get in FG range. they were 8 to 10 yards off at the snap.
playoffs? I just in my right mind say yes right now. Dallas, NY Giants are better than we are right now. Tampa, Seattle are better. Chicago is playing better and only getting better with Greise (spelling???) WE are 4-2 right now, but games with NE, 2 against dallas, another against philly and NY, i just dont know. |
Re: Are a we playoff team?
well here's my thing...while the cards are not horrible by any means, we had them down and were in complete control of the game...and if fletcher doesn't do that f'ing stupid taunting, i really don't think this game ends up that close.
that being said, the playcalling is just bad. i realize our o-line is decimated, so why not use more screens, roll out passes, WR screens, quick slant passes...plays that get away from the lines protection. i just don't get this very vanilla conservative calling that doesn't produce any results.
On one hand, I like your rollout idea to deal with the crappy line, but it pretty much eliminates half the field...how about shifting our offense to shotgun with portis draws as the running threat?....the only problem with that is our WR seem to all have hamstring injuries and cant get separation. Why does everyone on the offense seem to pull so many muscles? You got it....they aint stretching, so they are getting hurt. Anyone know if the defense has a different trainer or something? If so...someone in house is responsible for all these injuries....moss, ARE, the O line...etc |
Re: Are a we playoff team?
Not sure what you were watching but we DID try more screens than usual, and one ended up getting picked off right before the half.
Let's give the Cards D some credit, they bottled things up pretty good all day.
That was a horrible play. Campbell really showed his inexperience on that one. We are up 14-0 and our defense shuts them out on 4th down. I know we all want to score but maybe a run wouldn't be the worst call there. Ok, maybe pass it over the defender properly but NEVER throw a pick on the VERY next play. Come on man!!! That game should have been 17 or 21 nothing at half with Skins getting the ball after halftime. NEVER should have been a game at all. |
Re: Are a we playoff team?
We are not a playoff caliber team right now. Our O-Line is decimated by injury and our coaching staff cannot make halftime adjustments, on both sides of the ball (which I don't understand this problem because Gibbs 1.0 was the master of halftime adjustments). Portis doesn't have any explosiveness, we do not have any physical threats at WR, (including Moss because he's not 100%) and Campbell will still make some young QB mistakes.
Wow Sammy! You just summed up "REDSKINS 07 PROBLEMS" perfectly in one paragraph Excellent post |

LOL damned if you do, damned if you don't. If we just ran and didn't try to move the ball people would be bitching that we needed to be more aggressive. The screen RB screen is a pretty safe call, JC didn't get enough air under his pass and the D made a nice play. I can't fault the call though, I liked the fact we were trying to move the ball and weren't content on sitting on it and running out the half. |

I'm never negative but I call it like I see it. That series would have ended that game and we didi about the only thing to keep them in it. All this bullcrap about the line being hurt and that's why they didn't let Campbell throw. I watched ever snap like you all and Campbell had his worst game of the year. He overthrew balls and was never even close to a rythm out there. How about a three step drop and slant or hook or 5 step bomb to go for the throat on that 1st play? That screen wasn't a good call because there were only two defensive linemen rushing on that play. One happened to tip it to the other fat ass who caught a gift. Screen is best on blitzes or at least 4 to 5 man rush. |
Re: Are we a playoff team?
We definitely are a playoff team when we have beat teams that will contend for that wildcard spot. Both detriot and arizona were teams that can take it. We need those tiebreakers. We are in great shape right now. So yes, we are a playoff team and i don't think many teams in the NFC are better than us, even though they probably will have a couple extra wins at the end of the season. The only teams that scare me are the cowboys and the giants. We will get a feel for them in the regular season and when playoff time roles around and we play either team for the third time i am more confident in our coaches to breakdown the other team with the experience from the regular season, than the coaches on those teamss.

Re: Are we a playoff team?
This could be a game where we realize we cant "run first" this year.
Our line either has to radically change or we need to change our offensive philosopy. I dont know who always says this...but right now I think we need to shift. "Pass to open up the run." We may have to go shotgun 40% of the time. Even on first downs....try hurry up too. This offense cant play smashmouth anymore....we need to deal with that reality. Yes, we can do this 3 times with Sellers if it is first and goal at the 3....but 10 yards running the old school way is likely part of the past with this line. Betts has returned to his standard "backup" running that we've seen for years and something is wrong with Portis anyways. (The reason Betts rocked last year was due to the line, we were all suprised at how well he did, because we knew him) Gibbs needs to make Campbell throw the ball early to get in synch with receivers...that didn't happen because of conservative playcalling due to the Oline injuries. He never got in synch and that hurts his development as much as sacks. It reminded me of the Brunell days. This guy has a rifle of an arm....it is time to trust him and chuck it! and c'mon Gibbs.....3 TDs and 1 int is better than 1 TD and zero picks if you know what I mean....you cant live in fear of picks and win! You are just handcuffing our best offensive weapon. YES, you heard me....due to crappiness of others.....I just said. Jason Campbell is our BEST OFFENSIVE WEAPON right now. USE EM....he doesn't lose games due to his mistakes. |

Interesting that the 2 teams that scare you happen to be in our division. I tend to agree with you, which is why I think we are NOT a playoff caliber team. We are 3rd in our own division out of 4 teams for heavens sake. And we are talking about the PLAYOFFS.....PLAYOFFS? |
Re: Are we a playoff team?
I'm just afraid of the lose mentality we have......."every game is gonna come down to the wire" "this league is like that" "tough fought victory". We will never make it to the superbowl with this loser mentality.

Re: Are we a playoff team?
It's not so much about being negative, and not about being a kool-aid drinker. It's about calling it like we see it.
Our defense was in the right place at the right time on the two interceptions. Warner just flat out missed his targets. It wasn't like Taylor or Fletcher made amazing plays on the ball, Warner threw it right to them. Now, you do have to credit Taylor and Fletcher for impressive run-backs. But can you count on your defense to get INTs like that when you're playing QBs who are considered above-average? Can we expect that when we play Dallas? New England? Hell, even McNabb again? The offense is not looking strong with so many linemen hurt. We can't run the ball effectively, and that has to concern everybody. Without Rabach, we were very vulnerable up the middle, and Campbell had to rush several throws. If Rabach comes back strong, I'll feel a little better. But in general, the offensive line all needs to play better, or we'll be lucky to squeak into the playoffs at all. |

Re: Are we a playoff team?
I thought we were until last week, and now I have serious questions. I think we have great players, but all teams have injuries and that is no excuse for the crap we saw today.
In our losses our team has either had a terrible mentality/gameplan or poor excution, or both. I think we got very lucky today, and if this was any team better than the Cards(which there are alot) we would have been squashed. If we need 3 turnovers, a pick-6, blocked PAT, and a lucky FG miss to win against a lowly team such as the Cardinals I would think we have serious issues. I am happy for the win, but realistically it just shows how bad we are.
We won and teams have to fine ways to win. Last week we played good and lost (so people Pi$$ed and moaned) yesterday we played bad and won and people are still Pi$$ind and moaning. Can anyone here just enjoy a win? |
Re: Are we a playoff team?
That was one of the most painful 2nd halves I have every watched......very very hard to enjoy

Not really, because HOW we played matters. How we played is indicative of how we're likely to play in the future. More days like that one on offense spells a lot of losses. That's just how it is, pal. Don't get me wrong, the fact that we won is great. It may even have saved us from a viscious downward spiral. But if you want the next 5 weeks (4 games on the road) to be more Ws than Ls, you have to play much better than we just did. Joe Gibbs will tell you the EXACT same thing. |

The reality is that for teams that aren't yet at elite caliber (and I'm talking of two teams -- Indy and New England), squeakers and ugly wins are just a fact of life. It's called inconsistency and it is hard to shake, I'll give you that. We can go .500 over the next 4-5 games and make the playoffs. Period. And, other than Indy or New England, I really do think that this team could beat anybody else in the league if the team that throttled Detroit shows up to play rather than the one that squeaked by Arizona. But, that's life with an improving, mid-level team. Some of you act like we were headed for the Super Bowl all along and have somehow botched it. I think you must be confusing this team with San Diego, New Orleans, Detroit, Carolina or any of the other sexy contender picks who are flailing miserably right now. We are OUTPERFORMING where 90% of the so-called analysts said we'd be. Don't confuse homer love for superior understanding of the NFL, we were never going to be an elite team this year. |
Re: Are we a playoff team?
Detroit????????
|
Re: Are we a playoff team?
"playoffs?!? . . you wanna talk about playoffs?!?"
this has been said a bunch of times already . . . if Randy Thomas wasnt injured then yes, i do believe with this start we would be playoff bound. It will be close, week 17 against Dallas will be rockin'!!!!!! |
Re: Are we a playoff team?
My roomate, also a redskins fan thinks that there is a good possibility for there to be three NFC East teams in the Playoffs. While this is possible, Im not sure it is very probable. On the other hand if you look around the NFC the chances that it will happen look pretty good.
Second place in the NFC North is Detroit who we beat out in a tie. Same thing in the west having beaten the Cards. So it really comes down to Carolina and Tampa (At least at this point in the season), and we play Tampa, so beating them would also give us the tie in that situation. All in all if we go 10-6 we could make the Wild Card even if New York beats us out, and it is possible that if we went 9-7 we could as well. Like I said I am hesitant to buy into this, because you never know what is gonna happen throughout the rest of the season, I just wonder what you guys think as far as wether three NFC East teams will make the playoffs. |

Yes, don't you recall all the preseason hype over the Detroit air attack, the improved defense, etc? They were a trendy pick for NFC surprise contender. And they were expected to kick the crap out of us by many analysts. |

Re: Are we a playoff team?
fix the o-line and we will be at the playoffs, but right now we are one dimentional defensive team that is 9-7 at best, but will miss the playoffs .
