Is this according to “the plan” Rivera and the trainer masterminded? I just want to see Curtis playing at a high level again. His explosiveness is needed |

I just want to see Curtis playing at a high level again. His explosiveness is needed
Heard Michael Phillips make this point about CS, he may end up being another DeSean Jackson type of player in that you can't rely on him for 17 games and you just have to manage his health as you go and be ok with that. Obviously you just hope last year was a worst case scenario. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Good to hear this on Davis from Rivera
On LB Jamin Davis's progression: "Very happy with it. You see a lot of good and positive things from Jamin right now. He's much more comfortable with what we're doing and how we're doing it. He's picked up the way we do things in terms of reads and drops. Reading through his drops and understanding the concepts is really big and he's done a nice job with that. So very pleased with that. As with [LB] Cole [Holcomb], he has done a nice job stepping into the Mike [MLB] position from the start. Last year he was more a Will [OLB] for us. Then when JB [form Washington LB Jon Bostic] got injured we moved him to the Mike [MLB] and he really showed very well. Now's an opportunity to work on that skill set and he's done a very good job. When [LB David] Mayo's gotten his opportunity. Dave's a big physical guy. Today was a good day for Dave. We did a lot of our big defensive stuff. So he got an opportunity." Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
what it sounds like is Samuel isn't in football shape according to Ron. this guy has had an entire off season and then some to get his body right. coming out of the gate he can't even get through a few camps practices.
ron should have told him that come training camp you had better be ready to go. no excuses. be in the best shape of your life. all ron is doing is covering for him saying we have a plan. what is the plan? lol. i'd go w/ the other guys and would start phasing him out. then we'll see if he wants to get his body right. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Not in football shape... definitely calling BS there. It's an excuse and a weak one at that. Remember back when Shanahan called out McNabb and Haynesworth for not being in football shape? It's coach speak for there's more to this situation than I want to get into.
|
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Given our cap situation next year, if Dotson and Brown are half as good in real games as they appear in practice then Samuel is toast next offseason whatever he does

Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Guys I’ve heard been turning serious heads in camp: Fuller, Cosmi, Cole Turner, Dotson
Also heard praise about JD Mac, Ben St Jus, Dyami Brown |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Now that I'm almost over my bout with Covid and I have just enough energy to do something besides sleep, I naturally decided to come on here and bitch about the makeup of our football squad.
You know who's pissing me off right now? Ron Rivera. Because he acts like he has forever to get this team set up to be a playoff team. I think we're close enough to be able to make a trade or two to pick up a couple of savvy veterans to shore up our weak areas and help us make the playoffs this season. So, he needs to shift into a higher gear and get some deals done now. We're loaded with jags at some positions, just hanging around picking up a paycheck. So, cut some of them now and run as many tryout players as necessary through the system to find one or two who have enough desire to come in, perform with maximum effort, and take a backup position. Who knows, we might get lucky. |

Also heard praise about JD Mac, Ben St Jus, Dyami Brown
We talkin' bout practice... lol. But Turner at TE is interesting. He is going to have to put on some weight and learn how to block. Right now there is no way he can handle NFL LB's in the run game. But with his ball skills and long arms at 6'6 he might be a real keeper. Can they develop him?? He and Logan at TE you just have two guys w/ so much size and two guys who have the ball skills. LB's and Db's won't be able to deal with in the red zone. Then if Dotson can develop w/ Terry... w/ JD out of the backfield. And just a little something out of Samuel. If we just had a QB that was pin point accurate I feel this offense has so much potential. The parts are really coming together. A high flying offense will also put some people in the seats. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
The offense is definitely looking up. I'm worried about the middle of our D -- safety and LB seem to be weaknesses (although we do have Kurl and Holcomb, we don't have a lot else), and we may get eaten alive by slot receivers and TEs (and QBs who get the ball to them quickly negating our pass rush). And there was FA help available for those positions (less now). I am no GM nor do I play one on tv, but this seems to be a fairly uniform view -- for everyone but our decision-makers.

On paper I think we have improved at every position group on offense with the exception of the O-line. You can't say you improved there when they lost an All pro. I think they have the potential to be just as good though, collectively. The defense is the question mark for me, particularly the LB group. They may be sufficient, but what happens if Cole or Jamin get injured? Not looking good there. |

But a few years ago w/ Alex they were winning and no one cared. They were a boring team. I just feel w/ this franchise, if they can just outscore some people and win some games 35-31 then at least they will be fun to watch. So a high flying offense and wins would be the best. I feel Wentz and also the o-line is going to slow things down, at least out of the gate. I don't think much of the defense and especially Del Rio. A better DC would get this group to the middle of the pack and that is where they should be. |

Think they will be better really. Think the dline will be very good especially when Young comes back. Excited to have a qb who will really sling it and plays aggressively. Think the offense will be a lot funner and should score more.

But yeah this is embarrassing to some extent: "LB David Mayo ran with the starters today in short-yardage defense, specifically in Washington’s 5-2 defensive front alongside Cole Holcomb. It appears that Rivera and the staff have identified a role for Mayo. Rivera confirmed that there are certain “groups” where Mayo is more valuable than Davis. “That’s just kind of the way some of the defenses are set up. We have a couple defenses where we have certain elements of it where it’s what we consider our big group." LB squad is worrying anyway. But if Jamin Davis doesn't take a big step forward this year, it's beyond alarming. We have nobody. (Oh my bad, Tre Walker unretired, so we're set). |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
I think we can all agree that the fact that nothing significant has been done to upgrade the LB group seems borderline outlandish at this point - from the outside looking in.
However, I also think that players have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it's not that alarming to me that one player who isn't necessarily a starter (David Mayo) may have more to offer in a certain package than another player who is expected to be a starter (Jamin Davis). While I am not exactly thrilled that we haven't brought in a Veteran LB to supplement this group, I am more than willing to wait and see how this all plays out. Bringing in Mayo for a short-yardage defense package, is not the same thing as 'David Mayo taking all first team reps, Jamin Davis working exclusively with the 2s.' BUT, if the LB group is trash this year - heads ought to roll. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Sam Mills out as dline coach. Odd timing:
https://commanderswire.usatoday.com/2022/08/09/commanders-fire-defensive-line-coach-sam-mills-ron-rivera-training-camp/ |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Been reported that Mills didn't see eye to eye with the players, some pointing to lack of performancd from D line last year as a result, maybe JDR and Ron were paying particular attention during camp having listened to the players. Hopefully we can expect a significant improvement
|
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
I was listening to 106.7 and they were saying that the tension was based on the players either not liking or respecting Mills coaching style. They were more comfortable w/ Zgonina so Ron made the move. Apparently there had been some tension there for a long time. That must have been a real difficult firing for Ron.
I just feel like as a group they're just a middle of the pack d-line, w/ or w/out Mills. If they're better then prove it. Yeah sometimes firing a coach can help but the coach isn't on the field blocking the linemen in front of you. Either you win your one on one match-up or you don't. No more excuses for these guys now. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Timing sure is weird. But with this D overall, and DL in particular underperforming their talent by quite some bit, I have no issue with a DL coaching change. They were not in synch with him from day 1.
|
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
At least his replacement has played on the D-line, and played in the NFL for 17 seasons. Mills III never played a down in the NFL. I'm not sure he played in College either. Not that being a former NFL player is a prerequisite for being a good NFL Coach. But if I were a NFL player, I would have a hard time listening to - how to do something, from someone who has never done it at this level, or perhaps any level.
Anyway, I think Mills III was close to RR and coached for him for a long time - was brought over from the Panthers days. It shows that RR's not afraid to shake things up / make changes for the betterment of the team, even if it means letting someone like Mills III go. |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Listening to Sheehan podcast with Doc the other day, which you should listen too, Doc is fucking hyped and gets on a roll…
Apparently Payne has been ripping people up in camp, since we cleared some room on the dline…if Payne breaks out and has a big season, I would be done with bringing him back |
Re: 2022 Commanders Training Camp discussion
Payne having a good season is nice - I would rather hope that all these type A personalities can mesh so everybody can have a good season. The thing these star players have a hard time realizing is when Lebron signs up with Bosh and Wade, they can't all be Lebron every play. Sometimes they gotta take a back seat and sometimes they get to have the big day. Just depends who the opponent wants to prioritize - they can't prioritize everybody all at once so some days they'll double Chase which opens things up for everyone else. Then everyone else plays well so they go and double Montez. Then Allen or Payne does well and they double Allen or Payne. The truly dominant defensive lines understood that.

I see a lot of whining on social media about the DC media being too mean to Wentz. Seems like some fans think it's not fair to criticize Wentz for his accuracy issues, which is a compltely legit knock on his game, his tendency to miss the easy layups at times. Wait until we're a few games in and see what people think.

If he still can't constantly hit the checkdowns, it's definitely going to be a problem. In the NFL, those need to practically be guaranteed. |
