Re: How far can Beck take us?
Let's compare Shanahan to Spurrier.
Shanahan: 2 time Super Bowl winner. Spurrier: Thought training camp served no purpose. Shanahan: Can turn no name running backs into all-stars. Spurrier: Had like 2 different pass protections - total. And both sucked. Shanahan: Took a crappy QB in Jake Plummer out of a bad situation in AZ and turned him into a decent game manager. Spurrier: Doomed Patrick Ramsey's career from the start. Now Ramsey is nothing but a journeyman, can't even settle in as a backup. See where I'm going with this?
mooby: I am with you on the comparison until the very last line. Patrick Ramsey was destined for journeyman status in the NFL from the start. Steve Spurrier did not consign him to that status... |

But I won't debate you on that one, because I never watched Ramsey in college so I wouldn't have had the slightest clue if he was doomed to fail by the time he stepped on a college football field. |

Exactly, but it is more than just the Cowboys or Skins. Look at all the other dysfunctional teams. They get free press. It is the new thing in marketing, just generate controversy, good or bad, as long as you get your name or product out there with some cheap publicity. Cowboys suck, Skins suck, and the Raiders under AL Davis suck, but get big press and always have full houses on gameday. You have the Lions always under the blackout threat because folks in the Detroit area aren't going to part with their hard earned cash so quickly for some shitty football. Plus with the winless streak over, the Lions don't generate much hype or controversy. Jones, Davis, or Snyder aren't dumb, they know the easier route to making $$$$$$$$$$, and that isn't winning unfortunately. |

Probably should've done some research before you threw the Raiders in with your statement. The Raiders have sold out 1 home game each of the past two seasons, meaning that they've had 14 blackouts compared to 2 sellouts in just the past two years. |

You would think Raiders not selling out is common knowledge. |
You would think Raiders not selling out is common knowledge.
You would indeed, but nobody needs to check facts to support their argument nowadays. I'm curious to know if he knows that the Raiders were dead last in average home attendance last season. Mhm. Sounds like that whole good/bad publicity sells tickets idea only works if you're the Redskins or Cowboys, even though it's common knowledge nowadays that even the Redskins season ticket waiting list isn't what it used to be simply because we're tired of supporting a losing team year after year. I even think there's some partial truth to the conspiracy theory that the Redskins knocked down the upper endzone seats to avoid having to answer questions about why their 200k waiting list didn't want to buy 5000 seats in the upper endzone. But, hey, the "reality" is that we're trying to drum up excitement and publicity by having Shanny start Beck or Grossman at quarterback this season. That'll do the trick. |

How far back in history are you going to find the Raiders playing to full houses every week? Same question for the Skins who probably have NEVER sold out a game in FedEx. |
We're not going 6-10 for another 2 years. I think the D will be vastly improved this year and we'll be more consistent on offense.
with beck and grossman that's highly possible. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I think, just gut instinct, Rex will be our day one starter. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but if it's Beck I'll be pulling for him as I imagine all Skins fans will
Good to hear you say that. If John Beck is fortunate enough to actually win the QB competition and be announced the day one starter, there will be no pressure on him because so many have already predicted nothing but doom and gloom for the guy. The pressure will be on MS to make it work, he has publicly raved about Beck while many have been critical of his judgement. I support both the coach and whoever wins the QB battle and will be very interested in seeing what the end will be. Re: How far can Beck take us?
My best guess is that Shanahan looks at the organization and knows that there will not be a direct impact with the current roster he has. He tried last year with McNabb but no results were acheived. First and foremost, I don't think Shanahan believes that Beck is the answer. In fact, I think openning day starter will be Grossman. Secondly, 3 and 13 or 4 and 12 will probably land us the number 1 or 2 pick in next years draft which is stocked with good QB's primarily Andrew Luck and Landry Jones.
QB is the most important position on the team, with Beck's inexperience, I can only doubt that he will not provide the necessary leadership to make the Redskins a playoff caliber team. |

Beck's inexperience is due to a perceived lack of ability and proficiency. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
Just heard on ESPN 980 that in training camp today, John Beck tossed two, perfect over-the-shoulder bombs to Armstrong, -- who dropped it; and Hankerson, -- who bobbled it, and landed out of bounds.
Also looked really sharp on play-action roll outs to the right side. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
He also threw 2 INTs to D-Hall. :silly:

Camp is just getting started, I wouldn't read too far into these updates. Seems like opinions on Beck differ depending on who you listen to.

There is a short piece in today's Wash Post saying the same thing. Not good. In a QB league I just dont see how the Skins can expect to compete without one. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
We have not even gotten to preseason games yet...calm down, people.
Spurrier's offense was lighting up everyone at this point. That ended well. Besides, we just had a huge lockout. There's bound to be rust even with the pickup games they played over the summer. Give Beck a chance. If he fails, Rex is there. :D |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I think the mentality of most fans are that they don't want to give Beck a chance because he's not a well known player...You can't become Drew Brees or Peyton Manning riding the bench for the past four seasons...
|
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I really hope Shanny's right about Beck. After a swing and a miss on McNabb, if there's a 'strike two' on Beck, expect to see torches and pitchforks in Ashburn.

I don't even think it's that complicated. Redskins fans are impatient. They always demand "results now" and also give up on people at the blink of an eye. Look how many "fire Shanahan" comments and threads we had in YEAR 1! Welcome to the site, new guy. |

I just think if the organization wants to win now, and it looks like they do, then they should go out and try and sign Bulger. He was the best FA out there and he's better than anyone we currently have. |

Our running game should be huge this year. A ton of good RBs and a better line...Beck may not need to do a lot. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
He also threw 2 INTs to D-Hall. :silly:

Welcome to the site, new guy.
Well if the front office didn't shove a win now approach down our throats then perhaps the fans would be more patient. I know I would. If this QB situation blows up in the Shanahans faces, and it's a good chance it will, then the heat is really going to be on them, both from Snyder and the fans. And what if Blaine Gabbert gets time and plays well???? |

For the record, I'm not passing any sort of judgment on Beck at this point whatsoever. 3 or 4 games into the regular season, then I'll start pontificating. This just happened to be the very first bits of any news that I've heard on his performance good or bad, and I decided to post it. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?

Agreed. I think the O-line and the defense overall will be improved quite a bit. Our success won't hinge as much on QB play as last year. But I'm still not sold even one little bit on any QB on our roster. I'd still like to bring Dennis Dixon into the fold. I don't think he's a franchise QB or anything, but it sure would make things that much more interesting this year. |

One wonders how exactly any of the moves we've made signify that we want to win now in anyway. If anything, the moves we've made prove that we are NOT in win now mode, and are far from trying to win now. |

What? We've been stocking up on young depth players and filling holes...not making flashy "win now" signings like the Eagles. Are we watching the same Redskins team? |
I'm firmly on the Beck bandwagon. Hey why not, we tried the big name approach last year and it was a fail. We've got nothing to lose.
It's happened before where Qb's come out of nowhere how bout romo? he was a 3rd stringer, trent green, kurt warner, and on and on. Rex knows the offense and put up decent numbers in his 3 games, but he's still Rex. If Beck is as accurate as they say he will be just fine. |
