Since it looks like Iffy just isn't coughing up his number, here's what is available right now (could change fast) for Portis... 27, 31, 35, 36, 37, and 39. Walt Harris and perhaps Taylor would also be picking from that group. Interestingly enough, as of right now, if Winslow is the pick, he'd have no number to pick from in the 80's. Why wasn't there this kind of outrage when Tre Johnson had number 77 [COLOR=Red]given[/COLOR] to Randy Thomas on his arrival? No one said anything.

I never said that 103 tackles wasn't impressive. I think that's damn good. Nor did I ever try to blame it on the defensive line, but you can't tell me that 3 picks is good for a safety just because Roy Williams only got 2. Roy Williams is a hitter, Iffy isn't. Iffy tries to break on the ball and he's more of a playmaking safety. As far as that goes, 3 picks isn't good. Brain Russel plays safety and he had 9 picks last year, Corey Chavous had 8. Roy Williams makes you afraid to go over the middle and Chavous and Russel make you throw away from them, Iffy does niether.

I dont know how the Vikings had amounted so many picks by mid season, it was very impressive.

Ifeante Ohelete is a 2-year STARTER for the Washington Redskins... and 103 tackles and 3 INT's for a safety in [B]ABSOLUTELY NO WAY[/B] sucks, no matter what anyone says!!!

MY POINT IS.... [B]NO ONE should EXPECT him to give up the number he likes and HAS EARNED.[/B] That's all. Ohelete is no flamboyant, bragadocius, arrogant, or a trash-talker. He let's his play do the talking for him, and that's it. I have never heard a quote from the guy... much less one ripping a teammate or the sorry coaching staff we had last year. Personally, I think that.. and the fact that he is a 3-year veteran of this team, warrants a LITTLE more respect than he is given by most of us.

AGAIN... I am not saying he is great... I am not saying he is in the class of the incredibly awesome, God-like Roy Williams... I am saying, he is a REDKSIN... one with tenure... and if he doesn't want to give up his number, no one should even discuss it.

By the way... You guys realize #81 has NOT been retired yet...

Personally, I think we will retire the number this year... and/or at the very least they'll pull that whole "un-officially retired" deal they pulled with Wuerffel wanting #7 (Theismann's number)...

You're right, Hail. Only one number has been retired... Sammy Baugh's #33. I read that there is serious discussion to retire #28, maybe as soon as this year.

This is all crazy talk! Who gives a crap what number you wear? I know it's important to an extent, but why commit more than a casual amount of energy to it.

When I was in high school, we had an interesting system for assigning jersey numbers. Every Thursday, before practice, we would all line up in order of seniority and starter status and whoever was first in line would get their pick of the available numbers. It was kind of screwy because you weren't guaranteed the same number every week.

I always wore #28, in honor of Darrell Green, and my birthday was July 28th. Even though by my senior year I was playing fullback and linebacker, I could still use that number. Well, one week I was late for the line-up for uniforms and this a**hole under-classman safety took my number. I really wanted to kick his ass, but it was my own fault for being late, so what could I do?

My point is, Ohelete got the number first, so therefore it is his to keep as long as he wants it. He doesn't have to take money for it, or challenge for it. It's his number. If he wants to take money for it, well, that's his decision. Personally, I'd give up my number for a couple million bucks. That would be more than enough to buy new shirts for all my family and friends. But that's just me.

Like I said, the one time I had to give up my number, I was seriously upset, so I understand the attachment players have to those big numbers posted on their chests and backs, but when it comes right down to it, the number you're wearing doesn't mean squat.

Personally, I'd like to see Portis adopt a new number anyway. It would be a sign of maturity and an ability to adapt to his new environment. Why make waves?

I agree, Bunglehead. It's a pretty trivial thing to upset a teammate over, especially when you're the new guy on the team.

For his part, I think Portis has had a rather jocular attitude about it-- I don't think it's as big a deal to him as the press is making it out to be. I think Portis has just been having fun with it, without realizing the negative energy he's been putting out there by hamming it up with the press at his teammate's expense.

Ohalete doesn't seem to be taking this as lightly as Portis is treating it. Ohalete has refused to speak to the press, and obviously has rebuffed any attempts by Portis to settle the matter.

Portis needs to realize that egos can be very delicate things, and team chemistry-- especially on a team with so many new faces-- is easily spoiled. Clinton, accept your status as the new guy, the less-tenured player, and respect the status of the more veteran players on the team. If Ohalete wants to keep #26, smile, shake his hand, go find another number, and never say another word about it. We all know what a wonderful player you are, but we'd like you to prove that you're a wonderful teammate as well.

Different situation. A former Redskins coming back, and a 2nd year player giving him his old # back....a sign of respect.
Ohalete has been in the league (and wearing #26 for the Skins) longer than Portis, and Portis is new to the Skins....just pick a new number....

I like Jacobs with #84. Maybe he'll be the second coming of Gary Clark
