Ohalete refuses to give #26 to Portis
I could swear I saw Portis with the #26 Redskins jersey during the press conference that introduced him. I guess they had not asked Ohalete first.
I like Ohalete, but he needs a dose of reality. Portis is a 2 x 1,500 yard RB, one of the league leaders in TD's and a probowl player. Ohalete is a good special teams player and a serviceable yet average Safety. We need to draft Sean Taylor, so Ohalete realizes the pecking order. Ohalete should give the #26 to Portis. |

Give it up, iffy! Portis is the real deal. If he wants 26, give it to him.

I'm gonna disagree. I think if he wants to keep the number, its his to have, he was here first. I really dont want to Piss off Portis, so I dont really care or have a dire need to press the issue. I just think since he was here first, its his #. Think of it this way, if your in High School and your a Senior on the Varsity team, and yer nothing special, and this all- world kid comes up form the JV Squad who just happens to have your number and wants it, would you give it to him?

Iffy should give it up if portis want's it but I think portis should compensate him for doing so, portis right now is on track to a hall of fame carreer and i could see the reasoning behind wanting to keep the same number, Iffy on the other hand is going to be fighting just to stay on the field, either way it's only a number it doesn't make the man.

Iffy might not even be on the field if we get Mr. Taylor

The honorable thing to do in Portis' part is to ask Ohalete if he can have his jersey. So long as Ohalete is on the team the jersey is his to give away not the Redskins!

Portis says Ohalete won't even discuss the issue, like he's taking a hard line. To me that sounds pretty ridiculous, unless he's angling for a financial incentive. Or maybe there are a bunch of little kids and family members somewhere wearing "Ohalete #26" jerseys and he doesn't want to disappoint them. When Iffy first came aboard, announcers and other people would mispronounce his name and I remember hearing that it was pissing off the Ohalete clan. I think respect is a big thing with Iffy and his family ... maybe that's a factor in this.

You know what?
Trade him. Ohalete is a very good safety, but we appear to be willing to draft Taylor. I don't think Portis deserves the number more than Iffy, or that either player is bigger than the team, but his unwillingness to discuss the issue is childish and divisive. He's an undrafted free agent who could likely garner us a fourth round draft pick.

None of us know what is exactly going on. Personally, I think Iffy has a valid reasons for not wanting to give that number up whatever those reasons might be.
Let say you have a nice PC in your office and some new guy with super skills comes in and he wants your nice PC. He doesn't ask you but instead goes to the System Admin and says i want that PC. The system admin comes back to you and says the new guy wants your PC. What would be your reaction? Plus, there might be other value attached to your PC other than the fact that it is nice. I mean all your files might be very important to you and you can't be bothered to move over to a new machine. |

It's probably Iffy's last stand. This will be the last memorable thing he does as a Skin.

And so what happens if we draft #26 ... Sean Taylor??
We gonna have a 3-man Royal Rumble for the number?? Ohelete had it first... Portis wants it... and I'm sure Taylor is fond of it too.... pretty interesting situation brewing. I wonder if coaches or management will get involved?

Not sure, but I think there are league rules about such situations.

I personally think it's Iffys number. Portis is great, but he's also is coming to a new team. If LaVar was #26 who would be willing to give it to Portis? I mean, as someone said ahead, if someone took your piece of equipment in the work place it would piss you off.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Taylor and Portis together at Miami for 1 year? Or am I a year off? |
