What?
We've been stocking up on young depth players and filling holes...not making flashy "win now" signings like the Eagles. Are we watching the same Redskins team?
It's a win now approach, or try and win just enough to keep our jobs approach. Not saying it's awful but IMO we really shouldn't sign this many free agents cause it really never works. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
It's ok guys, we are tanking the season so all is well. Stay positive my friends!

How would you suggest they get to a 90 man training camp roster? |

You're thinking of the Eagles. MS had a win now approach last year when he wasted picks on McNabb. If he had the same mentality this year, we would be throwing picks at the Bengals for Palmer. |

We'd probably have Nnamdi and Holmes...with a ton of holes in the roster. (sounds like Philly) |
I just think if the organization wants to win now, and it looks like they do, then they should go out and try and sign Bulger. He was the best FA out there and he's better than anyone we currently have.
I'm not sure what this organization wants to do anymore. I'm sure they want to win now (doesnt every team) since they havent won anything in a loooong time. It a win now league so its time they start winning. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
Win now? This team?
Seems like they're trying to build for the long haul if you ask me. Sure they're bringing in free agents, but they're all in the 25-28 range and ready for their prime years. The Eagles are in win now mode. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
It does appear like we're entering the building stage, I only hope that we get 5 years to do it and the rug doesn't get pulled out from under Shanny too soon.

I think we are in a tough division this year and with a new quarterback and lots of new pieces the season could be expected to get off to a rough start. I would be reasonably pleased if we got to 8-8 this year, anything above that is a bonus in my opinion. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I think this year with so many new pieces in place, we might see them struggle early on. Could be one of those years where the record isn't a good indicator of how good the team really is. 7-9 maybe?

I think we will struggle due to the schedule, not the new players. :P It's brutal. |

I actually wish the Redskins would have done last offseason, what they are doing this offseason. But yeah, I think we are building for the future. None of the signings we've had could be interpreted as "win-now". |

Yeah, but last year they didn't have the cap room they do now, and free agency was pretty limited. And obviously circumstances changed when DM didn't work out. They did do a good job at cleaning things up cap wise for this year knowing they could really make a splash at building a young core for the future. |

If they were TRULY building for the future then they would not have signed all these guys. They would've drafted a bunch of guys, which they did, and then let them play, like Tampa Bay did last year. They started two rookies at wr and found a stud RB off the waiver wire. Now those guys have game experience. Armstrong gets game experience and then has to fight for a job cause Shanahan likes a career journeymen Jabar Gaffney. It's like we always try and get other peoples players right when they're entering their prime, or past their prime instead of drafting our own guys, letting them play together and let them enter their primes together. I'll say it again, bringing in a lot of other teams players doesn't work. The good teams get free agents here and there to mix in with establised core players. I like some of the guys they signed, but I question whether a guy like Cofield will fit in here. Hopefully he will. |

Unfortunately they havent really built much because they have given away their building blocks (draft picks) as a way of doing business. The days of building for the long haul are over because players and coaches just dont stick around long enough to really build anything. I'm hoping Shanny & Allen can change the culture of giving away draft picks the Skins have developed as a way of doing business. |

Granted it is just only one off-season, but haven't they shown that they did that this off-season? Not only we signed players that were not high-profile, we also acquired draft picks, which was never heard of in Redskins for last decade. We are definitely building a team for long haul, no question about it. I actually feel much better about drafting a QB next year, if Rexy or Beck didn't turn out the way Redskins hoped. The reason why I'm feeling better is we are creating a team where it would be good scenario for a rookie QB to jump in. |

A team that was known for giving away draft picks clearly was never in build for the long haul mode. |

Last year's WR camp invites.
Staying Medium: Redskins position preview: Wide receivers Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Bobby Wade, Mike Furrey, Terrence Austin, Joey Galloway, Brandon Banks, Roydell Williams, Shay Hodges, Anthony Armstrong. That's 11! (Glad that guy had no clue what he was talking about with his predictions) |

I was being sarcastic but that doesnt translate well to written posts. I agree 100% with you but that's not how it was portrayed to or looked at by the fans (especially when Gibbs was brought back). |

Yeah well we did have a 1st, 2nd, and 4th as well. Plus we went into the draft with what 5 picks? And then leveraged that into 12. Pretty good. So you can't really say they aren't placing a high value on the draft. Bottom line is you need a healthy mix of draft picks and free agents, and I think you're seeing that. Rome wasn't built in a day. I think a philosophical change in team building is pretty evident at Redskins Park these days. |

They are placing that value on the draft for now but things can change pretty fast at Redskins Park. I think if the Skins could ever get some stability at head coach and have a system (both in game plans and player acquisition philosophy) in place for more than 2 or 3 years it would do wonders for the team's onfield performance. Successful teams just dont change coaches/philosophies as often as the Skins do. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
You know, even if Beck does have a great season this year, or Grossman for that matter, I still see this team going into the draft next offseason and getting our long term answer at QB. We might even flip one of these two qb's for picks or a player, since they're both over 30 and clearly not the future.
|
Re: How far can Beck take us?
Dont know much about beck apart from watching a handful of his games with miami.
For this year i have no prob heading into week 1 with a unheralded qb (beck, grossman) whom the shannys think fits their system best. Unless the D does an about face, the W-L record isnt going to look pretty imo this year. The biggest thing i want is a qb who can run their system to some degree. I really want to see what the shannys system looks like b/c apparently with mcnabb freestyling and not picking up the playcalls, we didnt see it last year. |

Oh yeah duh. How could I forget my favorite pick of the draft. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
We need a really big step forward from the O line this year.
Speaking of the big boys in front of Beck or Grossman did anyone see the Trent Williams interview today? That guy is really articulate and it seems like his head is in the right place for him to continue to grow and grow into a top flight player. Hopefully. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I don't know if this has been posted yet but this doesn't give me a shred of confidence that our offense won't remain stagnant.

Re: How far can Beck take us?
This year has shown a profound departure from recent years gone by. In the old Snyder/Cerrato days we'd have Franklin, Jenkins Holmes and Namdi watching scrubs till Thursday, wondering about the well-paid ass whupping they'd signed up for.
This years signings have almost all been well thought out and address needs and character, aside from the curious obsessiveness at WR and RB (Donte Stallworth? Really?). My biggest worry is O-line depth (please, just say no to a Stephon Heyer re-signing) One or two injuries leads to whomever suits up at QB landing in a body bag. I've no great faith in Grossman, but at least he knows the system - Clements, not so much. If the line can stay healthy and keep Beck upright I see no reason we can't win 8 this year. |

What schedule are you reading? :bs: If you rank the teams' schedules based on the win/loss record from last year, the Redskins schedule is a piece of cake. I believe it is the 29th most difficult one based on that metric. The Skins' 2011 opponents went a combined 121-135 in 2010. (Check for yourself to see if I made a math error here.) The Redskins get to play the Panthers as one out of division team and the Vikings as the other. Based on comments here, the Vikes should be an easy game because they have such a worthless QB and the Panthers were abjectly miserable last season. :towel: After they play the Panthers and Bills on two consecutive weekends, they then have to contend with the 49ers - - another Super Bowl contender. :yeahright The Redskins - - and the rest of the NFC East - - get to play the NFC West this year as part of the in-conference rotation. Remember, that is the division that had no teams with winning records last year. What you ought to fear the most is that the Redskins EASY schedule will make the team appear to be "one player away from greatness" in 2012 and tempt the powers that be into abandoning the "build from within strategy"... :joke: |
