Potential problem with Sean Taylor
I am a very happy Redskins fan with all of our recent signing, but the signing of Archuleta had me a bit worried. Almost everyone in the Redskins community was happy that day, except perhaps Sean Taylor. Arch is going to be making alot more than he is, and atleast I feel Sean Taylor is the better player out of the two, and he definately has more potential to become THE dominant safety in the NFL than Archuleta (bc of skill,youth,etc.). If I was ST I would be upset that I was getting paid less than Arch, if not at first, but after my lovely agent Drew informed me. I do not know about you guys, but I have a feeling ST might holdout, or try to do some sort of renegotiation with his contract. Either way what might happen, could cause a potential problem with the team. I understand right now his major concern is his court issues, so he can actually get on the field, but after that is over(which I am crossing my fingers for), he will go to this. There has been talk in other threads about this, but I do not know if it has actually has it's own thread. I want to hear what everyone thinks about this.

Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
honestly sean is a pretty good guy when it comes to the team. regardless of his off the field problems, he has been a leader and a great team guy.

Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
ST needs at least one, more likely 2 seasons of continued on-field dominance coupled with keeping his nose clean off the field, before he should even consider a hold-out. Until then, even thinking of a hold-out would be asinine.

Agreed, except before you even get that far ST needs to keep himself out of jail before he can think about renegotiating or holding out. |

We're talking about the same guy that wouldn't call back his coach last offseason when he was MIA from voluntary workouts? I don't want to rehash this whole argument, but I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Taylor hasn't always put the "team" first. |

I am gonna have to agree with him, ST hasn't always been all about the team, or he wouldn't have missed workouts and hey maybe would have thought a bit before pulling a gun on someone. But again, this is NOT the point of this thread, I am only talking about the potential holdout, that is all. |

thats very subjective to say. I'm just going by th evidence that his teammates have said. he also has stated he completely plans on being at the offseason workouts too. |

....and if he follows through on that, my opinion of him will change dramatically. For now, I'm still skeptical........just my opinion though (I recognize I'm probably in the minority). |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
Yeah I'm concerned that he'll hold out. But then again there isn't much precedent for players holding out after only two years in the league. Portis is the only one I can think of, and that ended in a trade.
First he has to get cleared of his charges. Then he could even start to think about holding out. If he's cleared, I doubt he'd hold out quite yet. Rosenhaus must know that Taylor could get a lot more cash if he just distanced himself from the gun charge, played hard for a year or two, and then came back to the bargaining table. Then again who knows what Rosenhaus is thinking. The guy's as greedy as they come. |

I totally agree, not to mention we had good players restucture thier contracts so the team could bring in impact free agents. If Sean Taylor starts whining, that would just be a slap in thier face. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
i think i heard somewhere that taylor's contract could allow him to earn up to 40 million if he meets certain incentives. If he makes the pro bowl, it would give him a 9 million bonus, i think.

Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
1) Sean Taylor doesn't have much barganing leverage right now with his trial coming up. They were going to try something like that last season, but this whole weapons, assault thing came up and they dropped the idea.
2) Sean needs to prove he has become a mature adult. Not a punk who spits on people, disrespects a hall of fame coach, skips workouts, and pulls guns on people. When he can do the right stuff off the field for just a year or so, I have a feeling Joe, Danny, and GW will work out a very nice payday for him. 3) plus Arch has been in the league for what 6 years, playing at a consistant high level. Sean has two years under his belt. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
ST will get his money eventually, no need for him to worry. If he beats his case and stays clean for a season, I think the Skins would be willing to restructure. Right now he doesn't have enough leverage.
|
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
arch only got a 5$mill bonus... a lot of his money depends on him staying on the roster. (5 1$mill roster bonuses starting next year). Cause of his injury troubles, its an injury structured contract.
ST makes slightly over 2mill a year (average), but a pro bowl means a 9mill$ bonus. A baseball guy wrote it, and there's just a lot more incentive clauses in your average MLB contract cause there's no cap (they allow owners the chance to pay less if they miss, but it takes away cost certainty). he almost got to the pro bowl this year... if he gets in, that's it, its a 27mill contract and almost the same deal as arch. If he hits other incentives it becomes better. if he holds out, his chances to hit his incentives starts to go downhill. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
This entire discussion is pretty much moot at this point. His entire future is all up to a jury and judge. In other words, his future is in doubt. There is a very real chance, ST will never play in the NFL again (what is that chance? I'd guess somewhere between 25% and 75% -- it isn't 0 and it isn't 100%).
Now, if he is found not guilty, gets the charges thrown out or something like that, he is going to make a great deal of money. The good news for ST is that he didn't get drafted by a cheap owner. The bad news is nobody wants to redo deals with Screw Rosenhaus (if only the NFL would whack that worthless POS). My take on ST is that what happened in Miami was a wake up call for the man. He didn't keep his nose 100% clean, but you did see quite a bit of good stuff. He still needs to grow up. I just hope for his sake (this is bigger than football) that one mistake doesn't destroy his life. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Taylor fire his first agent and try to get more money before his rookie season? If that's true, then he doesn't seem like much of a team guy.

i dont think he fired him to get more money. no motive was ever explained. right after the deal he fired the guy that wrote it and re-hired his old agent. he's deal is super cap friendly to the skins, so i'd say it was very (incidently) team oriented ;) |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
sean taylor on the field is a great player i would b mad if i was gettn payd less than adam off the field he needs to work on a lil bit
|
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
speaking of rosenhaus, youd think his tactic of having players hold out for a big day wont be working anymore, so he prolly wont suggest taylor does that.

His original agent was actually Drew Rosenhaus then he fired him right after being drafted and went with Jeff Moorad. But then he and Moorad parted ways without explanation. But a week later Moorad announced that he was leaving the sports agent business all together to be President (or something like that) of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Then Sean went back to Drew...circle of life |

Yeah, very powerful story - but I think it was just the circle thing at the end that made it so dramatic. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
First, I'm not going to refer to Archiletta as "Arch". He's not Carroll O'Conner and I am not The Meathead. It annoys me for some reason.
Second, there is nothing to suggest that Taylor will hold out. He understands how the game is played and knows that he will get his when the time comes. |

Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
Taylor's additude changed last year only after his arrest and the need to change his image arose. If he gets off these charges I'd be willing to bet he will hold out this year.
I mean, his choice off agent says it all. In his defense, his contract was a little low for where he was drafted.............but he did sign it. |

What you say is true...that is good. But the facts are he may do some time. I hope not. I love to see him and Arch hitting anything that moves!!!! |

Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
I don't think the team would mind renegotiating Taylor's contract. When he signed that contract he had yet to play a single down in the NFL...he was still an unproven player. They are bringing in Arch with some experience under his belt and we all know what he can do at the NFL level. I'm sure Snyder would be willing to renegotiate Taylor's contract because we've seen the type of player he is.
Rookie safties can't excpect to make that muck out the gate... |

Yah, Archuletta isn't nearly the meathead that Taylor is. |
Re: Potential problem with Sean Taylor
We have to see what happens to ST in court first. Then, we can woory about his on-the-field performance and his contract. Hopefully, he is a little more mature this year than last year.

The only potential problem i see with Sean Taylor..... Is the receivers willing to come into his area..... here's why.... check these out....

Archuleta his a good player my question is don't you agree you overpay him I mean making him the highest paid safety in the league is a bit much. That's the only thing for me he isn't even close to Reed, Roy, Taylor, Dawkins, Brown, Polamalu, Wilson, Sanders league this will hurth future contracts. |

You will see more teams follow suit. I dont think teams are realizing the amount of cap space they are now being alotted. |

We'll see how he does this year. he does average 3 sacks and a bunch of tackles a year... i think his salary is too high for what he's done, but there's no real recourse there. |
