Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Is anyone an Insider with ESPN? That have an article talking about what a great move it was for us to get Smoot. Thought it would be a good read, but I am not an insider. We all know it was a great move but nice to see others think so as well.
On a side note, I really like Springs and even though he has been hurt, I hope he stays with us and come to his senses and restructures with his favourite childhood team. Springs, Smoot and Rogers looks like money to me. |
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
i would be happier with bly ,smoot and rogers, more of a healthy lineup

Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Don Banks strikes again. Here is what he had to say about Bly and Smoot. Wow he has a mad on for us.
7. The Lions trading Dre' Bly -- It seems to me that Bly quickly showed his true colors by complaining that he wanted Detroit to trade him to Washington rather than Denver, because the Redskins were willing to give him a new contract and the Broncos aren't. Show me a guy who'd rather play for the perennially losing Redskins than the perennially winning Broncos and I'll show you the type of player that Lions coach Rod Marinelli is trying to weed out of his locker room. At the very least, Detroit got a potential starter at offensive tackle (George Foster) and running back (Tatum Bell) in the Bly trade, which gives them lots of options at No. 2 in the draft. Minnesota cut its losses with the clueless Fred Smoot. Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
You know, a lot of people will have negative opinions on Smoot coming back to D.C.
Personally I think the move could end up being the smartest and best offseason move for us. First off, we didn't break the bank by signing Smooty. Secondly, he wanted to come back to D.C. and be a Redskin. Which leads me to the third thing, in my mind if a guy wants to play ball for your team, chances are he's going to do a pretty good job for you. |
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
To me its obvious that the Smoot signing was a good move. Smoot played extremely well for us and that's something that shouldn't be overlooked. His bad years in Minnesota was because he was placed against top recievers constantly in Minnesota.
In other words he wasn't coached to his strengths, i like Smoot alot but he is not a shutdown corner. He needs to be covering the teams 2nd or 3rd wideout. Not the Marvin Harrisons, and Chad Johnsons. Gregg Williams knows how to get the best out of Smoot. Smoot could have commanded more money out on the market. Truth is we now have a very solid backfield. More capable of covering spread offenses. This is an excellent signing by the Skins! |

It's all about who wins the Super Bowl. If you step back and look at it, all the teams were losers except the Colts. With parity each year in this league, you never know what team is going to be this year's Titans or 49ers, teams that show marked improvement upon their previous year. Hell, you never know who is going to be your 2005 Redskins. The Broncos always make the playoffs and always bow out before winning anything big. Before someone spouts off that bullshit rhetoric, you might want to be a little more objective. |

I think Smoot played his best when he was hungry. He came into the league with a chip on his shoulder and he may have lost that in Minnesota once he got paid. I think he'll play hungry again for us, he's getting a second chance to prove himself and he can put his struggles in Minnesota behind him.

I cant take it anymore, everytime we do something he criticizes it. Hes never right about anything and still continues to get paid for his NFL expertise, what a joke that is. Everytime he writes something, no matter what its about, he takes a shot at Snyder, Gibbs or the Redskins. Hes as bad as Pete Prisco, if not worse, neither of them know football and both despise the Redskins, I hate both of them. |

I think Springs is much better when healthy. Better in every phase of the game. Smoot isn't strong or fast enought to lock up Steve Smith like Sprints did last year, nearly shut him down. To me, Skins most likely are going to part ways with Springs, which is a mistake in my mind. Hence, all the Bly rumors to Denver. |

You have to remember too, that to someone from Mississippee, Minnesota is like a foreign country. It's cold and the people talk funny. Sometimes you just don't feel at home. |

Smoot was NFL trash blowing down the street and for some reason the Skins could not resist picking it up.
It's obvious why Bly wants to be a Redskin. If we give him a 3 year deal I would be okay with the trade. Plus, La Canfora said that if the trade does happen, we will get for our 6th pick: Bly, Denver's 1st rd pick (21), a 3rd round pick and possibly a 2nd round pick. That's definitely worth it. Then we could trade Springs for even more draft picks. And I don't think the Smoot signing was terrible. His best days are behind him?? What? He's only 27!! Minnesota was a team in transition while he was there, and he played under multiple head coaches/coordinators and never fit in. It obviously affected his play. While with us he played at a pro bowl level, was a locker room favorite, and led the team in INT's a couple of times. Plus he could have gotten an even bigger contract than the one we gave him if he had played the market, but he just wanted to come home. I LOVE that Freddy is back, and I couldn't disagree more with what you say here... |
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
In the past, when healthy, Springs was a top 5 CB. At his age now he is still a top 10-12 CB when healthy.
Smoot is a solid CB. Maybe top 40 but that is till good considering there are at least 96 of tme counting nicklebacks. He can play #2s well and do a dcent job against #1s but he isn't as good as Springs by any stretch. |

He's a definite upgrade from Mike friggin Rumph or Kenny Wright, he's better than Ade Jimoh, and Springs' health is waaaayyy too iffy and he's 5 years older than Smoot. I heard that Smoot could have gotten more money from Tom Boswell of the Wash Post, not Smoot himself or the Skins. Plus the deal we gave him isn't as rich as initially reported. Yes he got a $7M signing bonus, but after that it's essentially $11.5M over three years (according to LaCanfora). Plus Smoot has played for G.Williams before, and knows a lot of the guys on this team. I just don't believe at 27 his best days are behind him, and I don't think it was a "terrible" move. |

I understand your argument, but Smoot isn't asked to come back and be "The man" here. He's asked to play a #2 or #3 corner which I think it's pretty widely accepted that he's a #2,#3 caliber player. He had a lot of off the field distraction over in Minn. and there is no question that it effected his game, so it's not unreasonable to think he will improve. As far as us being in transition, I say look at what we're doing in the offseason. I really don't feel like this is a transition at all. We're keeping virtually the entire o line, bringing back campbell as the starter, holding on to all of our coaches minus lindsay, and we're coming off a late season rally. |

Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Honestly, I don't even care if that meant we could attain some more picks. Hell, sit him on the bench and draft a CB with the second round pick for all I care.
|
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
The thing I’m worried about is, if we trade Springs for Bly, who is our #1 CB? None of the three (Smoot, Rogers, or Bly) has shown in their NFL careers that they can be a #1 CB. I like all 3, Rogers is going to have a great career (not ready to be a #1 CB), Smoot is a great #2 or nickel and I would say the same about Bly. But all 3 of them on the field together against a good offense could be trouble, for the skins.
|
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Bly has shown that fairly consistently.

Who cares if a player plays for money.
Is anyone under the illusion that he'd somehow play less hard because he got paid? Stupidest thing I ever heard,, somehow he's less motivated because a team coughed up the cash for him? Someone should clue Don Banks in as to what a 'professional" is. ~Bang |
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Right. Does he think he's going to get paid AGAIN if he decides to slack off? I would think not.
|
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Not only that, teams can cut them without any guaranteed money besides the signing bonus. If you screw around, you get cut, no more money, game over.

Yes. They are always team transition. - Oh except that its the same D-coordinator as when he left, and, oh yeah, the head coach is the same too. They play the same defense, and, let's see, M. As for not hearing of any other offers - we'll get the memo circulated that offers must first be submitted to Offiss for proper scrutiny. |

Fred Smoot
When I first heard cornerback Fred Smoot was signing with Washington, I thought this might be another instance of the Redskins' front office overpaying for a player whose performance levels don't match his reputation. For more see espn.com |
Re: Insider info on Smoot from ESPN
Smoot is definitely not a #1 CB, but he is a great #2 or #3, therefore I think Smoot will do fine in his second stint as a Redskin.

The man played with heart when he was here. He didn't even cost us a bundle! Are u saying that u would rather have Kenny Wright?? With a 23rd ranked passing defense, we did the right thing. Enough tearing the team down for the smart moves we make. Smoot was the second best corner available. |

I personally don't have a prob with the Smoot signing, he's not a #1 CB but he's not paid like one either. The fact is management has not shown the ability to learn from thier mistakes, although I will give them big up's for not resigning Dock who was a big waste of space, a poor man's Big Daddy on the offensive side of the ball. I have alway's liked Fletcher but not at 10 and a half mil up front and at 32, all because we threw away our draft picks, Skins management doesn't believe you can find serious talent in the draft and look to short cut it with sub par talent with big price tags waving the proverbial flag of they have experience. Sorry but we could have built a perenial SB contender with the amount of talent we have passed up in the draft either through lowsey picks or trading away picks that could have brought back big time talent in the draft, and there doesn't seem to be an end! |
