Per Jason La Canfora:

"Cris Cooley signed a 6-year contract extension, he said, and just talked to us about it.
It happened very quickly, Chris said, and he is very excited. A big weight off his shoulders."

"It really came together in the past two days. Chris said he was discussing his uncertain situation with some of the positions coaches maybe 5 days ago or so and then within the past couple of days Dan Snyder made a push to get it done"

Note: Cooley's position coach is Rennie Simmons. Way to be Rennie!

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so glad he's locked up. One less problem we have to worry about. Here's hoping he earns his first Pro Bowl this season.

Re: Cooley Re-Signed

Thats really good news. I am really happy to have Captain Chaos locked up for 6 more years. He's a core redskin and great for this team. Now that Cooley has his deal lets make sure to get Taylor his. I think hes a free agent after next season but Im not certain.

Great news to start off a great season.

Re: Cooley Re-Signed

The good news just keeps on coming. Notice how the vibe of this season is already sooooo much different then the beginning of last season, or is it just me. Cooley should retire as a Redskin and I do predict his 1st pro bowl selection this year, move over Alge Crumpler its going to be Shockey and Cooley......I'm so ready for Week 1 to get here.....IS IT THE 9th YET!!!!!!

BEST NEWS I've heard outta REDSKINS park in sometime on a contact extension! THAT'S GREAT, he's gonna tear it up this year! :)

I had my doubts that this extension would get done, but thank god it did. Cooley is going to have a monster year.

Redskins give tight end Cooley six-year contract extension

That article on NFL.com says he got 6 years, 30 million, with a 14 million signing bonus. Good deal for him, I like it and he deserves it. I'm glad to see us extend our homegrown players, I'd much rather see us rely on the draft and then extend rather than do what we do in free agency.

Perfect deal, I love it.

He probably could have commanded more on the open market but I think he really wanted to stay here.

I'm going to break out my Cooley jersey today to celebrate!

Re: Cooley Re-Signed

6 Years, $14 million to sign, worth up to $30 million in total money (including the $14 million bonus).

That's a friggin bargain for a player of his caliber. Way to go Skins. See what happens when we're proactive with resigning our core guys? First Betts, now Cooley. Two key offensive cogs, both at a bargain price.

Thank God. Next on that list: Sean Taylor

That's one deal I'm glad they got done before the end of the season. Way to go FO.......There's no way I wanted to see Cooley hit the FA market, or having to use the tag, this is one of our best FO moves in a while, at least from a long range standpoint.....Hail!!!

Although I don't think Taylor will happen until next year at this time. And if he has the breakout season G.Williams is predicting, waiting until next year may be worth his while.

This is just awesome. Cooley is a REDSKIN!!! He is a throwback Redskin. He would've fit in with Riggo, Theismann, and the Hogs!! Great to have him in in the fold for the long haul.

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

Great news good to see Cooley will be in the burgundy and gold for the foreseeable future. I'm really happy that the Skins got this one done and at a reasonable price. Great deal for both sides. Hopefully he continues to improve.

Sweet. It's nice to get some good news. Now let's trade Brunell and roll into the regular season.

skinsnut 09-01-2007 04:04 PM

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

This is perfect!!!

On another note, this should put to rest any additional signing or talk of moving brunell since it would cost us cap space we probably dont have anymore

How dare someone change my thread title. It's like drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa. I've been waiting for more than 18 months to use the proper word re-sign instead of resign which means the opposite and now this.

Two good moves by the FO ... my first thought was that the Skins got a deal (of course Cooley has a calculation to make too, sign now and get the $14 million guarenteed or risk injury for the possibility of a few million more later). My second thought was that I hope Chris signed a prenup with the future Christy Cooley ... :)

Yes.

This is good news.

I know I can be a real pessimist but the Betts and Cooley signings - and their prudence this year are real indications that the front office is moving in the right direction.

jgalecpa 09-02-2007 08:38 PM

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

Cooley quoted in the Post article:
"I kind of started talking to a couple of our coaches and stuff and saying, 'Look, I'd like this done,' and it was awesome," Cooley said. "I think Dan heard about it a day later and said: 'Look, we pay. We want to pay. All we want is you here.' And maybe three days later it was done."
Makes it sound like the agent got in the way, here.

He talks to coaches directly, and four days later it is done.

Need to kep this in mind before we jump to the conclusion it is always Snyder blocking these negotiations.

I can now buy one without fear of what happened when I bought a Stephen Davis and Jeremiah Trotter.

Well not really, but I am buying one anyway.

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

That is great news. And it sounds like it is a cap friendly contract too. This guy is a team player, others could stand to take note of this. Good job front office on this one.

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

I'm late to the party on this one because I've been moving/partying for my mom's b-day for the past few days but man am I happy!!!!

Looks like I might have to go get that white #47 jersey soon, especially since I'm repping the Skins in Baltimore now.
