F... Deer
I don't really like using the "F" word, but considering what happened to me tonight, I'm going to use it this time.
F... deer. I f'ing hate them. They are everywhere around here. On my way home this evening a very large buck appeared out of thin air and completely demolished the entire right side of my brand spankin new 2008 Honda Accord. First he hit the front fender. Then his head hit my passenger window sending a shower of glass all over me. He put large dents in both doors and then finished the back end off with a nice large dent there too, shattering the tail light. I'm not kidding, when my passenger window shattered, I had visions of that deer scene from "Tommy Boy" running through my head. This sucks beyond belief. I haven't even made a friggin payment on my car yet. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Four years ago my husband's S10 pickup was completely totaled by a deer as well. These things are nothing more than four legged, mobile wrecking balls. I'm ok though. It could have been worse. Luckily there were no cars around and I didn't lose control of the car. I'm just bummed and need to vent. I think the only thing that might cheer me up is if we kick Dallas' ass this weekend. Arghhh... What a mess! Re: F... Deer
That sucks LB.
I was raised by deer. Well not exactly, but growing up there were deer all around my neighborhood. When my family first moved in the deer would run as fast as they could through our lawn. As time went by they got more comfortable and would linger. When I was in 7th grade a family of about 4-5 deer would sit down beside me while I'd wait for the school bus. When the bus would come I'd get on and they all would get up look at the bus and stroll away. It was kind of bizarre. But I've been involved in deer related accidents. One time I wrecked the front driver side of my '93 Accord swerving to avoid a deer |

Re: F... Deer
Oh man, that totally sucks. So did the deer charge your car or did you hit it?
|
Re: F... Deer
He charged the car. I guess he just saw headlights and came bounding from the woods. I saw him at the last second in the light of my right front headlight. It wouldn't have been so bad if he had just hit me once and ran off. Noooo.... he had to do a pirouette down the whole side of the car.
|
Re: F... Deer
I just got done venting because my wife ran over a nail that we need to replace the tire because of it. $140 bucks out the window. But as the old adage goes someone else has it worse.
I am sorry LB that does suck but no one is hurt. |
Re: F... Deer
The one thing I will give deer. They are DELICIOUS!
|
Re: F... Deer
I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me a few months ago, only your damage is far worse. Luckily, I swerved at the last second and his head hit inside my wheel well! Ouch! That spun him around, and he hit the side of the bed of my truck. I just have a couple small dents, and my door creaks when I open it. I was pissed, because, like you, it was a relatively new truck (~4 months old).
From then on, I have been ultra-conservative when driving at dawn or dusk. Those are the worst times. |
Re: F... Deer
I just missed a buck the other night. It was dusk and I was driving on some back country roads between a lot of dairy farms and this bastard just came out of the woods to my left and went right in front of the truck. Probably about an 8-10 point buck. However seeing as how I was doing about 55 in my 07 Dodge Ram I'm pretty sure he would have taken the worst of it. It would have pissed me off though cause those things do massive damage to vehicles. Sorry you had to go through that, and with a brand new car, no less. Good thing you are alright. IF you had hit with the front of your car it could of rolled up through the windshield.
So, LB, the real question is, after you pulled over and the deer was laying there dead, how many rednecks asked you if they could have it? |

Re: F... Deer
Wow, same thing happened to my wife a few years ago. She's driving through a somewhat wooded area at night, and a deer smacks right into the side of her car. And she was going about 35 mph at the time.
We get it fixed, and three weeks later she's on her way to work and in broad daylight a deer runs across the road and hits the right front quarter panel and slides across the hood of the car. We now call that car the Deerslayer. But the Deerslayer wasn't brand new, it was 4 years old at the time. Watching a brand new car get smacked up would upset me, too. I feel for you LB. |
Re: F... Deer
PS It's good you didn't react and try to avoid the thing. Or maybe you couldn't react, and in that case it was a blessing.
When you see those things, the best thing to do is simply hit the brakes and try to stop before hitting them. Don't swerve because you can run off the road and kill yourself. If you can't stop in time, then just plow through the deer without braking. Because as you're braking, the front bumper of your car dips down, and can act like a scooper for the deer. It can pick the deer up and send them through your windshield, which can of course hurt or kill you. If you just hit them as you're moving, the front of your car will have a better chance of bouncing them forward or off to the side where they can't hurt you. But it's tough to do the right thing, because it all happens so fast. |

I was terrified the first time I saw them sitting there. I mean I know they're not raging carnivores but still I'd never seen them so close. By the third day I was cool with it. It only went on for a couple of weeks by the way |
Re: F... Deer
First of all, did you have to special order a burgundy Accord?
Secondly, I'm glad you're OK, and I hope insurance will not bust your... chops (almost forgot you were a lady). |

Probably not because those SOB's never die! At least not the ones that we've hit. He ran off. There was one guy who came back to the scene and told me he saw it happen. He was about 40 yards behind me. He was the one who told me it was a massive buck. I didn't get a good look at it because it happened so fast and I closed my eyes when he hit. A neighbor who's driveway I pulled into and the other guy went looking for it, but didn't find anything. They were pretty "country", but they weren't what I'd call rednecks. They told me they hunted in that area and yeah, they seemed pretty psyched about finding it. |

It was a good thing too because when that glass went flying, it went all over me and I got a good bit in my mouth. That was because of all the girlie screaming I was doing. I'd hate to think about all that glass getting in my eyes too. |

I called it my "Redskins car". Burgundy with a gold stripe. :( You want to know what really pisses me off about the whole thing? Yesterday was the first time I've left work late in a long time. If I had left on time this wouldn't have happened. Why did I leave work late you ask? I was hanging out around our booking area arguing with the shift sergeant who is... a cowboys fan. |

Re: F... Deer
Sorry to hear about it LB...
SS, 7th grade, were you still in Potomac? I bet those deer own your old house by now, and their kids get on that same school bus... I was driving to work in my beat up 01 Civic, with a headlamp out. Ahead, I see the first run go back, so I slowed down knowing damn well these things travel in packs. Sure enough, the 2nd one jumps out and I smack it with the right front part of the bumper. The deer kinda goes sideways for a second, then hits the ground running. No damage, but the headlamp that had been out for several weeks came back on and worked for several more weeks before burning out again. Oh, and yes...Deer is good eatin'. |
Re: F... Deer
Yeah I was still in Potomac. South Central Potomac
|
Re: F... Deer
Sorry to hear about your car. The good news is that hitting an animal is covered by your comprehensive coverage which usually has a smaller deductible and will not effect your rates. Well thats how it works in Va. Its not the deers fault as we have run roads through their homes and developed around them pushing them into smaller areas. No I'm not Mr PETA but the deer are doing what they do. This is the worst time of the year as they are breeding and the hunters stire them up.

Re: F... Deer
This is a hiliarious thread, only because I heard almost the same exact thing from Daryl Hall (hall and oats) on stern this morning on the way to work. He got lime disease from a deer tick which has effected his life, he no longer goes in the woods. He went off on a tyraid about killing all the deer. It had me rolling, he also mentioned all the car accidents due to the over population of deer.

Re: F... Deer
This happened to me a few months ago. My car has a nice, freshly-painted front end and hood. :)
Don't worry, LB, that'll buff right out. |

Looking at that amount of damage what do you think will have to be done to the car as far as repairs go? Obviously most everything will have to be replaced, but I'm concerned about the framing and such. |

I sure hope not. I drive an 02 Honda (that I don't make payments on) and if a deer smashes it up, I can't afford another car! :(. Then I'm stuck on public transportation. I came in close encounters with deer in Rock Creek Park (anyone from the Metro area knows this is where Deer love to hang out and smash up your car). But I haven't hit one yet. But wow, an 08 Honda LB? I saw one of those at the dealership and I nearly attached myself to the hood. I want one SO bad. What a bummer, Lady. Insurance is going to cover it? (I kinda skimmed, so if you mentioned it, I'm sorry I missed it). Glad you're okay btw, I know more people get killed by deer every year than like.. bear attacks and shit. :P |

I have State Farm and they've been great so far. They were awesome when my husband's truck was totaled by a deer. I only have to pay a $50 deductible, so that's good. Luckily the Honda dealership where I bought the car has a body shop and they're part of State Farm's preferred service providers. I feel better about Honda repairing it than taking it to Joe Schmoe down the street. |
Re: F... Deer
Sorry to hear about that LB. That's some scary shit.
I was involved in a similar incident not too long ago. My cousin was driving the back roads of Montgomery County, MD (Rt. 28 to be specific) and we were all just kind of hanging back. All of a sudden.. BAM...we nailed the thing and then swerved into a ditch. I got out and walked up to the lifeless deer, and figured it was dead. A few moments later... it lifted up it's head. I kind of freaked... because I didn't want some suffering deer just laying there so I decided to look for something to take care of it. After searching for about five minutes the deer stood up and just stared at me. I literally walked right up to it and asked it to leave. I think I just started yelling "Go... like... out.. into the woods or something. you can't stand in the road confused". The deer sort of drunkenly stumbled around and eventually took off. Similar damage done to the car. I think his head hit the drivers side window. My cousin swears he made eye contact with the deer for half a second. Weird shit. |

They will probably replace the doors with either new or from a car which was smashed in on the drivers side. The biggest area of concern will be the rear 1/4 which they will either pop out the dent then bondo smooth or they will cut it out and replace. I would think that they would pop it out and bondo. Because its a new car they should have no problems matching the paint. Just because its a Honda Dealer does not always mean they have the best painters or body guys. In my area we have several mom and pop body shops which do excellent work which I would not hesitate to take my car to. You may want to ask State Farm about deminished value. This is what they give over the repair for the deminished value of your car because it was in a wreck. Not sure if this would qualify but it does not hurt to ask. |

Yes it actually is a problem in south san diego. |
Re: F... Deer
I do not know if they work or not but you can buy electronic devices that keep animals away for your machine as you traverse your..........Deer choked, highways and biways. Might be worth researching. I wonder what it says?? "Go ahead bambi, make my day"

Well, the only body shop I would have considered taking it to closed down a few years ago. Everyone I've known who's dealt with this Honda dealership has given them great reviews. I just got back from taking the car in. The cost of the repairs... drum roll please... is $5056. Cha Ching! They said it won't be ready until Dec. 5th. That means 3 weeks of driving my husband's crappy truck. Sigh... |
Re: F... Deer
they also may put "used" parts on your machine (if they are available) as they are cheaper. I have in the past demanded that only New parts be used on my vehicle. I do not know if that is an option for you, but...........
|
Re: F... Deer
I don't think they are many used parts for that car considering it is a new model for honda and they have really only been on the road since Summer early fall.

Re: F... Deer
No worries I was just making a statement, not trying to rain on your used part parade =)
|
Re: F... Deer
In most states they can put used parts on if its from the same year or newer car. Its not really a big deal because the fenders they are replacing were used. They do not use used parts if it is a wear & tear type item like a stearing arm.
WOW thats a bunch of money. Did they say how they would repair the rear 1/4 pannel? |
Re: F... Deer
The work order says nearly everything will be replaced. There are only a couple of things that indicate "repair" and those are small cosmetic items around the bumpers and cleaning the glass inside the interior.

What you may get are body parts that have signifigant bondo repair, and potential problems with undercoating issues. |
