F... Deer
I don't really like using the "F" word, but considering what happened to me tonight, I'm going to use it this time.
F... deer. I f'ing hate them. They are everywhere around here. On my way home this evening a very large buck appeared out of thin air and completely demolished the entire right side of my brand spankin new 2008 Honda Accord. First he hit the front fender. Then his head hit my passenger window sending a shower of glass all over me. He put large dents in both doors and then finished the back end off with a nice large dent there too, shattering the tail light. I'm not kidding, when my passenger window shattered, I had visions of that deer scene from "Tommy Boy" running through my head. This sucks beyond belief. I haven't even made a friggin payment on my car yet. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Four years ago my husband's S10 pickup was completely totaled by a deer as well. These things are nothing more than four legged, mobile wrecking balls. I'm ok though. It could have been worse. Luckily there were no cars around and I didn't lose control of the car. I'm just bummed and need to vent. I think the only thing that might cheer me up is if we kick Dallas' ass this weekend. Arghhh... What a mess! |

Re: F... Deer
That sucks LB.
I was raised by deer. Well not exactly, but growing up there were deer all around my neighborhood. When my family first moved in the deer would run as fast as they could through our lawn. As time went by they got more comfortable and would linger. When I was in 7th grade a family of about 4-5 deer would sit down beside me while I'd wait for the school bus. When the bus would come I'd get on and they all would get up look at the bus and stroll away. It was kind of bizarre. But I've been involved in deer related accidents. One time I wrecked the front driver side of my '93 Accord swerving to avoid a deer

Re: F... Deer
Oh man, that totally sucks. So did the deer charge your car or did you hit it?

Re: F... Deer
He charged the car. I guess he just saw headlights and came bounding from the woods. I saw him at the last second in the light of my right front headlight. It wouldn't have been so bad if he had just hit me once and ran off. Noooo.... he had to do a pirouette down the whole side of the car.

Re: F... Deer
I just got done venting because my wife ran over a nail that we need to replace the tire because of it. $140 bucks out the window. But as the old adage goes someone else has it worse.
I am sorry LB that does suck but no one is hurt. |

Re: F... Deer
I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me a few months ago, only your damage is far worse. Luckily, I swerved at the last second and his head hit inside my wheel well! Ouch! That spun him around, and he hit the side of the bed of my truck. I just have a couple small dents, and my door creaks when I open it. I was pissed, because, like you, it was a relatively new truck (~4 months old).
From then on, I have been ultra-conservative when driving at dawn or dusk. Those are the worst times.

Re: F... Deer
I just missed a buck the other night. It was dusk and I was driving on some back country roads between a lot of dairy farms and this bastard just came out of the woods to my left and went right in front of the truck. Probably about an 8-10 point buck. However seeing as how I was doing about 55 in my 07 Dodge Ram I'm pretty sure he would have taken the worst of it. It would have pissed me off though cause those things do massive damage to vehicles. Sorry you had to go through that, and with a brand new car, no less. Good thing you are alright. IF you had hit with the front of your car it could of rolled up through the windshield.
So, LB, the real question is, after you pulled over and the deer was laying there dead, how many rednecks asked you if they could have it?

Re: F... Deer
Wow, same thing happened to my wife a few years ago. She's driving through a somewhat wooded area at night, and a deer smacks right into the side of her car. And she was going about 35 mph at the time.
We get it fixed, and three weeks later she's on her way to work and in broad daylight a deer runs across the road and hits the right front quarter panel and slides across the hood of the car. We now call that car the Deerslayer. But the Deerslayer wasn't brand new, it was 4 years old at the time. Watching a brand new car get smacked up would upset me, too. I feel for you LB.

Re: F... Deer
PS It's good you didn't react and try to avoid the thing. Or maybe you couldn't react, and in that case it was a blessing.
When you see those things, the best thing to do is simply hit the brakes and try to stop before hitting them. Don't swerve because you can run off the road and kill yourself. If you can't stop in time, then just plow through the deer without braking. Because as you're braking, the front bumper of your car dips down, and can act like a scooper for the deer. It can pick the deer up and send them through your windshield, which can of course hurt or kill you. If you just hit them as you're moving, the front of your car will have a better chance of bouncing them forward or off to the side where they can't hurt you. But it's tough to do the right thing, because it all happens so fast.

Re: F... Deer
I was terrified the first time I saw them sitting there. I mean I know they're not raging carnivores but still I'd never seen them so close. By the third day I was cool with it. It only went on for a couple of weeks by the way

Re: F... Deer
First of all, did you have to special order a burgundy Accord?
Secondly, I'm glad you're OK, and I hope insurance will not bust your... chops (almost forgot you were a lady).

A neighbor who's driveway I pulled into and the other guy went looking for it, but didn't find anything. They were pretty "country", but they weren't what I'd call rednecks. They told me they hunted in that area and yeah, they seemed pretty psyched about finding it. |
