NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
NEW YORK - In a sign of the times, the legendary National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing debt.

Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
Well, if we apply the same thought to this as we do our national fiscal policy, we'll just buy a bigger clock.

Hopefully the historians have a broader perspective on the complex inner workings of a nation than the "Joe Six-Pack" of today. This administration sucks, plain and simple - no argument there. But to think you can simply tidy up the mess that is this country in a nice little package and blame it on one guy is a gross oversimplification. The economic and governmental woes go back decades and across party lines. What an incredibly tiny mind and myopic worldview it must take to conveniently chalk everything up to one guy. Simple minds look for strict one-to-one relationships and leave it at that. "Bush bad. Bush president. Ergo...all problems are a result of Bush." Thee branches of government designed with checks and balances in place, tens of thousands of officials and employees at work, and the best someone can come up with is "well this administration sucks." The intellectual arrogance and shallowness is staggering. |

And we'll purchase that clock with imaginary money! And we'll also manage to fund a few pet projects on the side with the money that's set aside for the clock. Foolproof! |
Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
Interesting, tell us what you chalk up to Bush. What part has he played in all of this?

Nothing, Clinton set this in motion years ago. |

Dear Republicans. Hope you got all that money you stole from this country invested in gold. |

What's sad is the last 8 years, and the best the repubs could spit out is McCain/Palin. |

Somewhat agree. This seems more accurate...
What's sad is the last 8 years, and the best the [political party] could spit out is [presidential candidate/vice presidential candidate]. |
Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
my first foray outside of the Skins talk on the board. How can anyone chalk this fact up solely to Bush. Last I checked the House has to initiate EVERY funding bill. I don't think that has changed. And I think it was de Toqueville(spelling:( ) that said that the US would be a great country until we figured out we could write checks to ourselves(big paraphrase). Well we have been doing that for 45 years and guess what, now we are reaping the rewards.
Has Bush/Republicans contributed, uh yeah. They came in, in the 90's making lots of claims, but the debt still goes on, so the Dems got the House and the debt still goes up. I am very discouraged with the whole political world. Every one who has made it to the national stage has foregone the roots that he grew up in, and has drank the kool-aid that says they are "special". The US needs to go back to some of its roots, fiscally. And maybe put some sanity back into the decisions, not promises to whatever group you think will get you elected. So that's my rant, thanks for reading. |

I assume you mean both the Executive and Legislative branches, again, the Executive branch can't bring any monetary policy into effect without the legislative branch initiating it. I also figure that these years will be looked at along the line of the 1920's. The shameful fact is that none of the current politicians really want to bring us back into a sane policy for tax/spending and instead want to take our hard earned money (be it $1 or $1million) put it to the "tyranny of the majority" so that they can stay in power. And finally also few if any Americans would support the real reduction in Government required to get it under control. ( some specifics examples of what I mean ... reduce the Army (not Navy or AF) to the size needed to protect OUR borders not to exert influence in the area of the day, clinton=Africa/East Europe bush=mideast; reduce governmental welfare to what it was when we were a growing country requiring self sufficiency = near zero; etc.) |

Don't ask me to contribute greatly to any thread on how to fix computers because I don't know the first thing about it, don't pay attention to dmek's posts in political threads because it's just not his forte. There are very few problems that can be blamed on a single administration. Several of Bush's policies certainly didn't make things better but he is not the root cause of every mess. History will probably not look too favorably upon the entire scope of Bush's administration...unless Obama turns out to be another Jimmy Carter. |
Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
i never once said that this mess is entirely George Bush's fault. but its just like a manager of a sports team. if their performance isn't up to par, the manager gets fired. if they exceed expectations, the manager garners the rewards. and after the Clinton administration, i cant really believe any republican would be upset with anyone piling on Bush.you guys are the same guys that chastised Clinton over everything, including a haircut. so you always reap what you sow

Doesn't that make Bush-bashers and Clinton-bashers two sides of the same coin? It's sad how intelligent and reasonable people distort reality to suit their own tastes and jockey for position to shove "the other team's" faces int he dirt. |

History will probably not look too favorably upon the entire scope of Bush's administration...unless Obama turns out to be another Jimmy Carter.
Classic! In all seriousness that's a very good point and I certainly didn't mean to suggest that everyone needs to have a broad and deep education on every matter before commenting. It just seems so obvious to me that the problems in this nation, economic or otherwise, are too deep and complex to conveniently pin to one guy. The other side of that mentality is that a new president will suddenly reverse this entire thing (I don't care if you vote for Obama or McCain). One guy and his administration isn't going to reverse decades of overgrown government, schizophrenic foreign policy and enough pork spending to drive this country trillions of dollars into debt. The same mentality is evident in football. The team loses and the immediate reaction is to find the one guy we can all blame. I guess there's something cathartic to feeling like you can pin all your frustration on one face. It appears that there is an entire subculture of disgruntled individuals who have very valid beefs with this current administration. Unfortunately the extent of their knowledge on the topic pretty much cuts off after they watch the Daily Show every night or their favorite political pundit. Like someone pointed out earlier, it takes a whole lot of people to pass a bill or defeat a bill or propose a bill. If you kick back on your sofa in self-satisfaction as you parrot whatever the "Current Administration Joke of the Day" is, you're completely missing the real problem. And that goes both ways, Republican or Democrat. |
Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
I'm well aware that our problems run much deeper than who holds the title of President. And yes it's convenient and satisfying to a degree to just blame it on Bush or the current party in office. I'm guilty as charged.
Now, anyone have a good youtube clip today or what? ;) |

Now, anyone have a good youtube clip today or what? ;)
And we're all entitled to our opinion and method of doing things, but should this mentality masquerade as real political discourse? I'm well aware this is a football forum and who knows whether anyone here takes this stuff seriously or not. I'm also well aware that the number of nasty arguments and vitriol that gets spewed here when it comes to political topics would seem to indicate that the general mood goes beyond just joking about politics. People appear to be genuinely pissed off which would indicate an emotion of some sort. "The left" appears to be delighting in the abysmal failure of the last eight years and taking every opportunity to mock it. I fully support that right, however immature it may be. For the record, it was just as immature for "the right" to parrot on like a bunch of schoolyard kids toward the end of the Clinton administration. There seems to be this "Well, you made fun of us first, so you reap what you sew" mentality going on. Sure, but you do realize it goes both ways, right? Let's say Obama gets elected in Nov and serves at least 4 years if not 8. Are you prepared have another helping of the same immature political rambling after your candidate has served his time? The best anyone can come up with is "Well they did it too!" and "Well the administration is so bad how can I NOT call them names and argue by posting funny verbal flub videos?" Congratulations, you've managed to just lower yourself to the level of every other idiot out there. Whether you're justified in the name-calling and petty arguing or not I don't see how anyone can deny that it just perpetuates the cycle of political and cultural ignorance. It's not wonder this country is so gravely disturbed. Someone "be the bigger man" and actually tackle the problems and issues for what they are and participate in constructive discourse rather than calling names, posting a funny video and somehow feeling like you've "scored a point" when "the other guy" gets pissed off about it. |
Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
Points well taken, but in the end this is just a football forum as you say, and we occasionally spin off into some off topic talk now and then. Are we impacting the world with what we're doing here?

I don't think we're revolutionizing the political landscape here at The Warpath, but don't underestimate how regular discussion of any kind can influence your attitude and behavior. I take everything here with a grain of salt (in dmek's case I use a whole salt shaker), but I have without a doubt learned a great deal from the few people on here who can articulate a cogent argument, whether I disagree with it or not. I've grown to appreciate and respect a great number of viewpoints that I previously didn't understand, all thanks to discussions here on "a football forum." We're probably not changing the world as a whole, but don't underestimate the impact you can have on someone's viewpoints or especially their view of the people you support. Why needlessly turn people off to your candidate by spewing a non-stop stream of immature political vitriol? You just make yourself look bad and that reflects poorly on the party and/or issues that you genuinely support. |

Yes we are. I just heard on the news that after reading about the problems with the national dept clock on the warpath that Bush borrowed $2,345.00 from Japan to buy a new Dept clock. |
