I believe that Corners might be our weak link.

Do you mean CB depth? Because Springs and Smoot are a pretty decent staring tandem.

My areas of weakness would be:

1) d-line (no real "stars" up front)

2) DB depth (an injury away from being in some serious trouble)

3) RB depth (Betts is nice but his injuries will always be an issue until he stays healthy for an entire season)

4) WR (nice depth on paper but guys like McCants and Jacobs still have a lot to prove)

5) OL (this unit looked very strong early on but since Jansen's injury things have snowballed a bit. We can't afford to lose anyone else)

Here are the top five weak links:

1. Defensive line

5. Defensive line.


All other problem areas - prior to any debilitating injuries - pale in comparison to the talent deficiency on the defensive line. With the possible exception of Corneilus Griffin, no one else on the roster is a sure-fire starter for a team that is hot on the heels of a division championship. Daniels could be a situational player on such a team; everyone else would be looking for work.

i honestly don't think we have any real problems except for lackluster d-line and DB/RB depth... (if portis/betts get injured, our running game becomes pretty weak)

I think jacobs could step up and mccants too... QB situation isn't quite the peyton manning experience, but i think brunell will help the team much more than hurt it (i don't expect 5 TD/400yd games from him or anything)

on the flip side, i think our O is strong all around... getting samuels and thomas back would definately help though... but i think cooley, our WRs, and portis are big pluses overall... on D we have 8 legit starters (counting lott/bowen as legit) and 3 D-linemen that could be better... our safety/D-line depth is alright, but not great... the only real depth problem is CB, and with springs history, well... i hope he stays healthy.

pretty much agree with you Matty, except for the order. i'd put corners first. Spring's health is really whats holding our D up. i see him as the key and its scary.

1. DBs, reliance on Springs for entire defense to work. uncertainty and thinness at nickelback.

2. DLine, DLine, DLine. don't need a household name, but need a surprise like Gardener was. LBs are good but not THAT good to stop the run AND pass rush. much less cover TEs too.

3. OLine. of course Jansen. Samuels is nicked up, still shaken from last year. Thomas nicked up too. all the backups are essentially rookies. if we get another big injury and have to reshuffle, forget Portis and forget...

4. WR. Coles won't be 100% all YEAR. Gardner still needs to prove he can catch the clutch ones. Jacobs needs to saty healthy, and Thrash is Thrash, proven to not even be good enough for #2.

5. RBs, while Betts isn't known for durability, we'd have to (god forbid) lose Portis THEN Betts. knock on wood, not so likely. what i'm concerned about is a true short yardage pile pusher. heart can only overcome physics some of the time, not all of the time. those situations WILL come up, and OFTEN. Rock needs to gain that weight BACK.

heh, my first instinct was to say that too, but if worse came to worse, our LBs can do some of the DLine's job, and Taylor could do some of our LB's job and save our ass. definitely shouldn't be that way though.

no one can do the corner's jobs.

very disappointed the FO didn't try harder to bring some fire onto the Dline. they obviously respect one side of the trenches more than the other.

DLine is the only real " Problem " area that I can see with this team. You can throw Quarterbacks in there, but seriously, we have the people who are quite capable of running a NFL offense efficently, they just need the time to learn. The CB position is just the lack of depth. If Smoot/Springs are healthy we can be fine, if Walt Harris is healthy soon and can step in if someone gets hurt were fine. Outside of those three however, were bascially screwed. So really the D-Line is the only area of concern I have, but I think that our coaching can help overcome the lack of bigtime talent we have there.

3. Expensive tickets.
4. Not being able to walk to the stadium.
5. The price of the concessions.

As for the team, just like the Patriots the component parts don't add up to the tremendous total. Coach Gibbs (And coaching staff) will be the catalyst.

but unlike the patriots, we have portis and coles... and a pair of killer LBs ;)

1 Entire Secondary-Smoot and Springs have to have a good season for this team to win. Taylor made some plays but that was Preseason now lets see what he can do.
2 Defense line-One would think that it will be better than last season but Daniels has been hurt and if he goes down who's gonna be a threat, Wynn?
3 Quarterbacks, Brunnell needs to stay healthy or 7-9.
4 Wide Receivers, Coles isn't 100% and Gardner was trade bait a couple of weeks ago. Mccants and Thrash both need to play well this season.
5 Offensive Line, Didn't look to sharp in the Preseason with the run, kinda sloppy. They better open up some lanes for Portis or its gonna be a long season.

No matter what our secondary will look bad because of the new emphasis on pass interference. We'll see more long balls, so will every team in the league.

D line is weak!!!! Yes I wish for the old day of RFK were teams didn't wanted to play the REDSKINS. Could not hear themselfs think!

Im going to go a different route here.

1. OT - One stud lost for the year, the other is still hurt.
2. CB Depth - Smoot or Springs goes down, we will be bringing up a squad player or street walker.
3. DL - Its obvious we will be running a rotation, hopefully everyone can keep a full gas tank and not get too beat up.
4. WR - If Coles toe acts up then we hand over the #3 spot to all unproven youngsters.
5. RB - Portis hasnt played a full year, and Betts is always a walking wounded.

I think if we have a problem with any of those five it will cost us at least one game per injury. I predict 10 - 6, but that could turn into 5 - 11 if people cant stay healthy.

What the hell do you go to a football game for if you sit down eating crimpets and drinking white wine when we score a touchdown??????? Screw that Payne!!!! Should have punched that old goat and tell him to make some noise!

They started doing the wave. It was the loudest wave I've ever heard, but they kept doing it while the offense was out on the field. I tried to get up and motion to everybody behind me to shut up, but they kept doing it. It was near the end of the game and we were ahead by a lot, but still...

It will be a disgrace if FedEx isn't rocking on Sunday. After seeing the VT-USC game there last week, the VT fans proved that FedEx can be loud and hostile.

Gibbs is back, that's all we need to say. Now make some freakin' noise people! For the people in the gold seats, get the heck outta the cigar bars and plant your butt in the seats!

Yeah, that's the difference between college football fans and upper-class Northern Virginia fans who can afford those Gold seats, I guess. When I saw the camera panning around FedEx Field for that game, I don't think I've ever seen the stadium that full. Imagine what it's like when all of them are pulling for the home team!?

D-line, though Williams schemes may help cover it up. It's the #1 thing we should address next year.

CB depth and health.

Also, can we get a consistent return game? I hope so... we see occasional flashes, but little consistency. And can Tupa still hit 'em, game in and game out? I thought that other punter put some pressure on, and Tupa was saved by his job as holder (maybe not, but I wasn't blown away). I think special teams coaching may be the weak link of the coaching staff. We'll see!

But forget this negativity! We're gonna kick ass!

That was preseason as the wave does not cut it in regular season. The vetrans will be in the stands and the noise will be up. Do you like the sign that goes up and says quiet offense at work? I hate that, let the quarterback tell the fans to quiet down and do the bird flap. Skins fans are respectfull but loud.

Only oner person has mentioned special teams. This is a huge part of the game. Everybody thinks this is not a concern?
