What should we draft?

Since the Mock Draft Database is reving up and you folks here at theWarpath.net can call it your Database as well, and their appears to be some excitement here for draft discussion, let's get to it.

Let's start with a poll to see which position we all think, despite your preference for best available, we should target with the first pick.

I voted offensive tackle. Jon Jansen is done. I think most of us have faced that. I like Stephon Heyer but am not convinced he can do the starting role right now. I would liek to see us address Pete Kendall's spot via FA

Re: What should we draft?

I'm torn between OT, (because Jansen's career is damn near over), Center (Rabach is painful to watch in action) and DE (because JT isn't what he used to be and I can't see us getting more than another year out of him).

Maybe two of these can be addressed through free agency

RMSkins 11-25-2008 07:21 PM

Re: What should we draft?

OT: Jansen is done, don't know what we have in Heyer.
OLB: We need to start grooming Washington's replacment.
OG: Kendall is a FA, need youth at position.
DE: JT is an unknown for us, Carter and Evans are solid, need a playmaker.
DT: Monty is a FA, Griffin is getting old, Golston and Alexander are solid.
C: Need to find Rabach's replacment.
CB: Depending on what happens with Springs and Hall in the offseason.
S: Landry and Horton are starters, Moore is depth, Doughty is a FA, Re-sign Green?
WR: To much invested already.
RB: Good.
TE: Good.
QB: Good.

blufan67 11-25-2008 07:33 PM

Re: What should we draft?

LB, Marcus is hurt as much as Springs lately. H.B. isn't big enuogh to play his spot and if he does than who else do we have to back up incase of injury. I agree we need o-line,but third round is fine for that. D-line, I'm still hoping the new ends come around and get healthy.

way too early i think.. some players could tank while others could rise to the top still this season.. plus (i know noone wants to hear this) but if someone has a career ending injury at a position like qb, wr, rb ??

Re: What should we draft?

If anything I'd expect the team to draft an OLB. I personally expect the team to cut Marcus and the FA market seems to have more possibilities at MLB instead of OLB, with John Vilma being the biggest name. Plus I don't know if we could afford Bart Scott or god forbid Terrell Suggs but then again never count Snyder out of a chance to make some noise.

To the rest of you, Jansen isn't going anywhere. We're going to face a lot of difficult decisions this offseason with Griffin, Washington, and Springs all facing a possible 1/3 chance of getting cut along with possible contract extensions coming up for Campbell and Rogers.

On top of that Jansen is on the books next year for around $3 million. His release fee is slightly over $6 million (thanks again to our cap guys). However in the meantime I would like to see the team find a RT within the first 3 rounds. Personally I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade back again especially with the cap crunch coming up. A good young pure Center late in the draft would also be nice. I personally couldn't believe how often we passed up Steve Justice last year.

Re: What should we draft?

We need to somehow aquire about 4 first round picks. DT, OG, OT, OLB, we need young talent everywhere. We will likely be in position to grab the top Guard in the draft. The offense is behind the D right now, and we've got to be building around Campbell. After the 3rd rd, you aren't necessarily looking for starters, and we need some, so probably have some free agents coming in. I can't see Haynesworth leaving Tenn though.

I'm definitely not a salary cap expert but the Jansen scenario looks pretty clear just like you point out, you dirtbag :). Here's what I'd like to add: we should not assume Jansen is useless to the team beyond this season. He cannot continue at the tackle position but I think there is real opportunity for him to serve as a starting/solid backup guard and possibly center. Please hear me out - I'm not a Jansen fan and think it's almost embarrassing we're paying truckloads of cash to a guy who probably wouldn't start for any other franchise (at right tackle). But let's be honest, lateral mobility is our biggest complaint on him. As a guard/center he won't have to chase guys on the outside. He can continue to smash people in the run game and his pass-blocking will improve by default on the inside. That's the case I'm making.

That said, RT has to be the top priority in next year's draft. The FO should nut up and just decide to land the top talent available - I'm f'ing sick of looking for "value-picks" like Golston and Monty (on d) and Rinehart. Top talent for a franchise fucking tackle, thank you.

After o-line I think linebacker and d-line have to be priorities. Maybe Blades and Fincher will make a nice surprise Sunday, but I suspect what we'll see is a glaring weakness.

I don't really know. He's a beast though.
That guy Peria Jerry, DT from Ole Miss looks great, but probably gone by the time we pick. Regardless, the O-line is in more dire need than the D-line at this point, and Jason Taylor is our 2nd round pick, so got to go O in the first, I think. Duke Robinson and Herman Johnson look like can't-miss guards, the kind of guys Portis deserves to run behind.

Re: What should we draft?

How about a guy who is being projected as a starter in his rookie year at either guard or center? He has been compared to some of the top centers in the league and we know how the Skins like guys who can play more than one position. This guy could be a quality starter for years and make things easier for Campbell AND Portis. Oh yeah, and he's super-smart. Either O Tackle or a mauling guard with a mean streak. We once used a 2nd round pick on Tre Johnson, and he was a road grader for us before he injured his knee. I will be happy if both the O and D lines get the upgrades they need during the offseason.

we haven't had a good, solid run stopper in the middle since Butz and Grant left. and with Grimm, you are talking about a versatile lineman that should probably be in the hall

That's exactly what i was thinking. We have some young talent in parts of our team but we need to focus our draft on our lines. Anything after the 3rd or 4th round is hit or miss. We don't have a second round pick this year. So the first round is best overall player on oline or dline.

We'll have plenty of time in the slow offseason to hash this over. Plenty of time.

Re: What should we draft?

I went with a DT, but only because I think we can find an OLB and a versatile young OL in free-agency. Without a dominate DT in the middle to collapse the pocket we're never gonna get a pass rush of the edges imo.

hail_2_da_skins 11-26-2008 10:56 AM

Re: What should we draft?

The Redskins need to strengthen both offensive and defensive lines. Offensive line being most critical. Center and right tackle are weaknesses. Outside linebacker is also a weakness.

T.O.Killa 11-26-2008 10:59 AM

Re: What should we draft?

Redskins need LBs desperately. They need to Marcus Washington. I think he will be released. Linebackers will be number one priority. Second, ofensive line, and third defensive line.

i agree but i think it might be best avail at either OL or DL, both to me are equally shallow in depth. I just am not a big believer in A Carter and J Taylor is better suited as a situational pass rusher.

Didnt they fran tag him this year b/c they couldnt agree on an extension? i did not follow haynesworth that much this off season but i thought they tagged him with the understanding that he will be gone next year if they dont pony up big bucks.

haynesworth would be sweet, hes only what 27?

I agree with most except, C, G, LB.
You can get great value outside of 1st round.
And I agree no one would touch a WR in the first

I say OT, Dline: best player available
I voted OT since our DT are young and DE are sometimes a crap shoot plus our defense is pretty good...its still our offense that needs help.
Imagine in a couple years if our 2nd rounders developed, AND we had a couple young Olinemen to protect Campbell so he could throw to them.
Not to mention, Buges aint gunna be around forever, get your young guys going next year. I agree Heyer is decent, but he'll be a great 3rd OT for years. Jansen is falling into that category too, unless we run 65% of the time which I doubt Zorn has the patience for.

This, my friend is a very good point.
Remember in preseason, they were using Jansen as a backup center?
They weren't using him at guard so much.
Mobility is sometimes more a factor at guard then Tackle because of all the pulling and usually those guys need to be HUGE...Jansen is not HUGE....which explains why Center would be a good role for him.
It is true that Rabach hasn't done well this year at center and Jansen has stunk at RT in pass protection, but we aint that far off.
Heyer is not a great run blocker, which is why he is a backup considering we are still technically a running team....so, if we drafted an OT in the first round, you could see the rookie starting, Heyer backing up, Jansen either taking over Center or restructuring his contract to become backup center.
Jansen is a WAY better run blocker than Rabach...in fact his run blocking skills are quite good...I just dont see us cutting a guy like that.
J Taylor is better suited as a situational pass rusher.
Maybe if the "situation" was that he was playing Madden.

hmmm....8 starts, 1 sack I believe.
lets cut down his plays situationally ....statistically....that would be zero sacks....not to mention he's a huge liablity in run defense.
All that for a 2nd and 6th rounder?

He gets the Redskins "Bust of the Year" award.
Too bad the Tuna gets our 2nd rounder to replace him with a 21 year old with 10 plus year potential....heck, our rookie 7th rounder would easily have 1 sack so far this year.
