Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Daniels called the Redskins yesterday and agreed to terms on a one-year, veteran-minimum deal, according to a league source.
"I'm coming back. I just talked to all the guys," Daniels said by telephone yesterday. "I'll probably end up signing today or tomorrow, but I'm definitely coming back." washingtonpost.com |

Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
He signed for vet minimum. Granted, he probably won't see the field -- but I don't consider this a bad signing at all.
|
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Other then not getting young on defense we have basically shored up all of our D-line issues (unless AH gets hurt) Our only issue on D now is OLB and maybe a late round CB right? Most of our issues are on Offense, meaning we need a RT, G, and a C. Perhaps a RB late in the rounds but we have picked up two talented speed RB's in Dorsey and Aldridge. So in later rounds if we wanted to play with drafting a tall solidly built WR perhaps to groom to be a possession WR might be nice. I would love to see us pick up Tate if available which he probably won't be but there was a 6'-6" or 6'-7" WR that might be good to look at in later rounds. Draft mags are saying he does not have break away speed, but is a good possession WR who will win the jump ball. How nice it would be to have three young WR's for our future.

Good move for us.

I'm guessing he has as good a shot of anybody at starting. I think that we'll def rotate though. |

I'd say right now he's penciled in as a starter. |

I'd bet on it. He didn't come back here to sit on the bench. He can still play and he's the best run stopper we have at DE. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
I would think he's the favorite to start IF he's fully recovered & didn't lose much from the injury. At first I though Daseal's post was extreme, but as I think about it, Daniels could still very easily be cut by the end of camp. He's 36 & coming off a bad injury.
Any of our DEs could be cut by the end of camp w/the exception of AC. Its a potentially crowded, but not deep position. If we get a decent DE in the draft or an udfa they'll have to decide whether to keep 2 guys w/roughly the same ability - Wynn & Daniels - or cut one of the speed rushing 'project' guys - Jackson or Buzbee. Or maybe Wilson will be the odd man out. He didn't get much pt under Blache & really didn't have much of a season, other than on spec. teams. HOw many de's did they keep last year? |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Unless we draft someone I can't see Daniels getting cut, unless of course he's just not healthy enough but that shouldn't be an issue. Who is going to beat him out? Wynn?
|
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Good signing, good deal. He's respected and liked on the team; he provides valuable leadership in the locker room and tutorage to the young guys. It would be a nice if he could pressure a quarterback once in a while, but beggars can't be choosers. Fact is, he's hard, he's tough, he's a role player. Good signing.
|
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Matty, I agree he's penciled in as a starter -- I just don't see him making it through training camp healthy enough to start.
|
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
I agree with this move too. With Brandon Jacobs out there, I like to have a D line with some heft to it. Running into a line with Haynesworth, Griffin, and Daniels on it would have to hurt.

yes, if we draft someone I think it's a very realistic possibility that one or the other gets cut. If Jackson is all that Vinny believes he is & Buzbee comes back strong & they like him (I have no clue as to his status), they keep Wilson & AC, + Wynn & Daniels, that's 6 DEs. I would think that if a guy they really like is on the board w/our 5th that they would take him, regardless of needs. |

Take it to the bank! AND if he can stay healthy, he and Wynn might kick some ass |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
I like those qualifiers. If he stays healthy, he and wynn might kick some ass. So if he's healthy(he's old), he and another player(also old), might combine to kick someone's ass(the trainer maybe).
All joking aside. If you've got the room, for the money, it's a good deal for us to have these two at the price we've got them. Especially knowing the system in and out, and with Blache's insistence on rotation. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
More ammo leading towards drafting a LB in the 1st round. I doubt they would have signed 2 DE within the last 2 weeks and Cerrato going on the Doc show saying that Heyer is their RT and then using a #1 pick on one of those positions.
All that being said, we could certainly do worse on 1st and 2nd down. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
They (Wynn, Daniels and Heyer) are on the roster as cheap insurance/backup plan.
If the FO decides to keep this pick and use it, it might end up being something completely unexpected. It seems most likely all of the DE's, OT's and OLB's that are worth the 13th pick value or above will be gone. However there might be some very talented value RB's (Portis is getting old) and QB's (plan B if Campbell fails) that might tempt our FO to use the pick. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
I like the signing for run support, but I would like to see a pass rushing specialist added to increase the effect of Haynesworth..

I want to see them draft a couple of players after trading down but knowing the history of the club this may be the thinking. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
With Dainels signed our 13th pick shifts to the O-line (Smith, Oher). If Dainels stays healthy I think he can still be productive, and generate some pass rush.

Rashad Jennings is the name to watch out for (at least he was two weeks ago) |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
I would be happy for them to trade down(assuming Oher/Smith are gone) but please no qb's....

Rashad Jennings is the name to watch out for (at least he was two weeks ago)
I do not care if they do not get a great OLinemen, OLB or DE high in this draft. As long as they get someone that will a strong player that contributes and becomes great, that is all I want in a Draft pick. I would be happy with a great RB....what if Chris Wells is still there? Ahhh to have a big RB in DC again...crank up the Diesel. I also like Knowshon Moreno, I think he will be a good NFL back. I do not care about his 40 time. Emmit Smith also ran a 4.60 in the 40. |

I'm a big fan...but I think it's going to be a lot easier (and less dramatic) to draft Portis' eventual replacement later in the draft. And I think even in the 3rd round, we may find a solid RB. We could even find an LB later. But at 13th overall, my top choice remains Oher. I'm not much for hyperbole but I think he could be a top 3 OT in the NFL within the next 3 years and one of the best Redskins linemen ever. |
Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
Maybe the Redskins will take a punter with the 13th pick.

Lets get the line healthy, add some depth, and a young stud if we can. |

Re: Daniels agrees to 1 year vet min deal
While I am not going to compare Daniels to Michael Strahan, during his last year with the G-men Strahan was pushing 36 yrs old and he played very well. For those of you that are knocking on Daniels' age, well it is a good thing to have veteran leadership in the line, and to guide the younger and young players in the line.

What is your solution? Given the cap situation, getting Wynn and Daniels at minimum deals is just about the best case scenario. |

Not see the field? He is probably the starter at this moment. Not only will he play a lot of DE but will play some DT. Now they should be able to move Phat Albert to end on some passing downs too. |

welcome back big guy. our rush defense is looking very good. i just hope we can rush the passer. i don't we will sign/draft a starting LB

A good points... Daniels recorded 8 sacks in '05 and has logged as high as 9 in previous seasons. Dude can make things happen, but he needs to be healthy (obviously). I wonder if the FO know how healthy he really is? And I guess it won't be a surprise whether he has a great season or gets hurt in training camp...we'll see. |
