Mike Williams out for season? (JReid report)
Redskins sources: G Mike Williams, expected to be a key member of the offensive line, out for year because of blood clots near heart.
Jason Reid (JReidPost) on Twitter
-I saw this first on ExtremeSkins (J Reid Twitter: G Mike Williams out for year due to blood clots near heart - EXTREMESKINS.com) I hope this is just a crazy rumor. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
doesnt look like a crazy rumor considering the source. looks like hicks has a good shot at starting at right guard.
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
If Reid is reporting it I'd say it's more fact than rumor.
Sounds serious, hope Big Mike gets well. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Just to be clear, "blood clots" near heart doesn't make much sense. But if true, it may mean he'd need blood thinners, which would make playing football again less likely.
There are a couple of possibilities: 1) Blood clot in leg/lung (deep venous thrombosis or DVT) - usually in immobile people or with recent surgery. 2) Blood clot in heart from an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation). 3) Heart tumor (myxoma) - usually need surgery, ppl do fine. 4) Problem/clot on heart valve - unusual, unlikely. 5) Something completely different.. Can't think of anything else that would make sense in his case. Either way, hope it's just a rumor and he's okay. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
You're right. It's real. Guess we can change the thread title now.
Redskins Insider - Redskins lineman Mike Williams expected to miss season because of blood clots Redskins lineman Mike Williams expected to miss season because of blood clots Veteran Washington Redskins offensive lineman Mike Williams, who overcame weight problems to become a valuable member of the unit in his first season with the team, is expected to miss the 2010 season because of blood clots near his heart, two people familiar with the situation said late Friday night. Williams, projected to compete for a starting spot at right guard, was hospitalized recently because the problem, the team sources said. Although Williams has been released from the hospital, the organization is concerned that his condition could be career-threatening and likely will keep him off the field for at least the upcoming season, which gets underway July 29 when the team begins its first training camp under Coach Mike Shanahan. Williams did not immediately return a text message to his cellphone Friday night. Speaking on behalf of the organization, Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined to comment on Williams's medical status. The loss of Williams would be a significant blow to an offensive line in transition in the Redskins' first season under Shanahan, who also is the head of the team's football operation. Considered a bust as a tackle after being drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills, Williams resurrected his career after being moved to guard with the Redskins last season. Williams, 30, has a promising future in the league as a guard, Shanahan said shortly after taking control of the organization. The former University of Texas all-American was expected to compete with newcomer Artis Hicks at right guard, and probably would have played considerably even if he filled a reserve role. The fourth overall pick in the 2002 draft, Williams had been out of football for two seasons and last played in the 2005 regular season before the Redskins signed him as a free agent before the 2009 season. He struggled in pass protection at tackle but provided a physical presence at guard. Shanahan and his staff liked what they saw on film and the team rewarded Williams with a two-year contract. After weighting about 410 pounds when he joined Washington, Williams last month said he was down to about 330. During the team's offseason program, Williams served as a mentor to rookie left tackle Trent Williams, whom the Redskins selected fourth overall in the three-day April draft. Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Damn that doesn't sound good. This isn't good for our o-line depth. Before if a tackle got hurt, Williams could play guard and Hicks could move out to tackle. Now it looks like we might be back to Heyer as the the top backup tackle and like Chad Rinehart as the top backup guard.

Crap I forgot about that. I was actually thinking that the only good thing to come out of this was keeping another young Guard among Edwin Williams, Erik Cook, and Chad Rinehart. Had Williams been healthy two of those guys would have been released, now only one will be released. However it sucks that the Mike Williams comeback story ends here. At least they found it in time. I don't think I could handle another Redskin passing before their time is up. |

pretty much this.. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
I hope/pray this is the last injury to our OL otherwise it's starting early.
HTTR. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Damn that sucks. Hope he gets better whether he plays football again or not.
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
That's a damn shame. Guy his worked his ass off (literally) to make a comeback. Tough loss for him and the team. This is Rinehart's chance to really step it up and take over that position now

your right "this isn't good" but hicks could still move out to tackle and rinehart could fill the guard spot. they don't have to bring heyer in. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Even before this it was time for guys to step up but after this it's TIME FOR GUYS TO STEP UP!.

Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
What a shame for Big Mike. He worked so hard to get back and then his body betrayed him.
Is it me our does our OL in recent years seem cursed by health problems, both normal and exceptional? |

Yeah, this sucks. I actually expect Hicks to be the one to start now that we traded for Brown...but wow, that's a big loss. On a positive note, a lot of times doctors will miss stuff like this, and its good that they caught it now. A lot of situations such as this turn out to be very tragic. But man, that's a big loss. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
i was for Rinehart before this. its all about him now- make or break
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
I was definitely a Big Mike supporter. At this point I just hope the doctors and he can keep it from being serious.
Line wise, I think this isn't as big a deal. Just means the competition will be that much more aggressive. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
That's a serious issue for a football player, I've been there. Hope big Mike can recover, not so much for his football career but just his overall health. I have considered him a true success story after what he went through to get back on track.

Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
*Grimace* Here we go again... The season hasn't even started yet and we are off on the same foot. Losing starting O-lineman, plugging in stop-gaps. I just hope over the next few years we continue to focus on bringing in young top tier o-lineman.
I do understand that this is a medical condition, not an injury, but I do wonder if being 30 and grossly over weight for years didn't bring about this condition. It's almost a metaphor for the problems on our O-line year in and out. Neglect and age will never add up to success, or the ability to remain healthy in the trenches in the NFL. Get well soon BMW. |

As a Deadliest Catch fan, this is exactly right and this is what killed Phil Harris this past winter. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
I do hope BigMike makes a speedy recovering... not so he can play football again for us this year, just so he can live a somewhat normal life. Good luck big guy.
Now as a fan this does hurt our depth, but it also opens the door to some of our young guys getting a shot to make the team. Some one will have to step up, or maybe this opens the door for signing a veteran gaurd as a beckup, I am sure there are a couple out there who we could call. Then again there are always camp cuts as well. |

Just thought i give a little update on his situation. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
That's pretty sad, his career in the NFL is over. I hope he can recover so that he can lead a normal life. It's a shame, a classy guy all around.
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
This is why players have to realize how lucky they are I wish I had the talent they have. BMW didn't realize when he was here the first time how much he loved & had to work at it, then comes back commits 110% then this happens.
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Very sad to hear this I hope he recuperates from this.
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Damn that sucks. I hope he gets it handled and gets better soon, but it sounds like his football career is over anyways because it's just not worth the risk with that type of medical problem.
It's sad to hear that this happened to BMW after all the work he put in trying to get back on the field and everybody sounded promising when talking about how he'd play this season. So get well soon BMW and here's to you succeeding in whatever you do once this medical problem gets resolved. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
I think the o-line will be ok. Williams needs to stay active though, somehow. Why not play football?
|
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Stinks for Mike good effort on trying to make this comeback. Wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do. Most of the time however, these comeback projects don't work out to well.
Different circumstances but does take me back to the Erasmus James, 1st round bust project in 08 that had a bad ending after only a handful of games. Good luck Mike. |
What a shame for Big Mike. He worked so hard to get back and then his body betrayed him.
Is it me our does our OL in recent years seem cursed by health problems, both normal and exceptional?
We have crappy luck with our lines anymore. Doesn't matter if it is injuries or stuff like this. We simply have not put a decent emphasis on building up our O line. With Williams most likely to at least sit out a year or retire, we have to rely on Brown and our #1 rook to really be the stalwarts of the line. Rinehart and co are a bunch of bums that thus far really haven't stepped it up as yet to even really be considered for a starting job. We need to draft at least 2 more high round O linemen for the next two years striaght to get a decent line built, plus boost depth. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
CRUD!!!!! I wasn't planning on drinking tonight, but with news like this...........................I'M GOING TO GET TRASHED!!!!
It just feels like the year is over even before it gets going................................ |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Prayers are with you BM. As far as the o-line, we really just lost a back up. Hicks was starting at rg anyway. There will be other guys available as training camp goes on. NO WORRIES!!

I think Big Mike could have started, but this by no means means the season is over before it starts. Sky is not falling |

Gosh, I hope you're right...................................Its just that our o-line was so freakin bad last year. And with one guy going down alreeady before this season even starts. It just makes me worry that we're gonna suck again! I mean, what would happen now if Casey Rabach went down in Week 2 of the preason? CRAP! Thats what would happen! Man.................I need to build a bar in my house. Being a Redskins fan. I gotta have that bar.......... |

You have a point, BMW was attempting a career come back, not an all pro anchor of the line. Hopefully somebody, (Rineart, Hicks,) steps up. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
He hurts us at depth for the most part if this is a season ending thing. He was our best backup and a potential starter. Rinehart and co will need to really step it up. I still think just about all of our second stringers are bums. If we would have at least drafted one linemen in rounds 1-3 the past 4 drafts we would have been OK now. I forgot what round Dockery was drafted in.

I'm guessing he's going to be on blood thinners to reduce his chances of having a stroke. So it's probably not the best idea to be playing such a physical sport as football while on that type of med. |
Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)
Prayers and thoughts with Big Mike, blood clot near the heart is pretty serious. He exceeded my expectations of even making it this far and challenging for a starting spot.
This is just plain bad luck...but because we have a quality FO now, we went out and got quality depth in Hicks already so things are not that bad. Plus like said above, we still have time to add vet help. Rineart step up? He is in the same category as Thomas and Kelly as past draft picks im sick of waiting for...finally show it this year or get off the team. |
