Mike Williams out for season? (JReid report)

Quote:
Redskins sources: G Mike Williams, expected to be a key member of the offensive line, out for year because of blood clots near heart.

Jason Reid (JReidPost) on Twitter
-I saw this first on ExtremeSkins (J Reid Twitter: G Mike Williams out for year due to blood clots near heart - EXTREMESKINS.com)

I hope this is just a crazy rumor.

doesnt look like a crazy rumor considering the source. looks like hicks has a good shot at starting at right guard.

Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)

If Reid is reporting it I'd say it's more fact than rumor.

Sounds serious, hope Big Mike gets well.

Re: Mike Williams out for season? (rumor)

Just to be clear, "blood clots" near heart doesn't make much sense. But if true, it may mean he'd need blood thinners, which would make playing football again less likely.

There are a couple of possibilities:
1) Blood clot in leg/lung (deep venous thrombosis or DVT) - usually in immobile people or with recent surgery.
2) Blood clot in heart from an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation).
3) Heart tumor (myxoma) - usually need surgery, ppl do fine.
4) Problem/clot on heart valve - unusual, unlikely.
5) Something completely different..

Can't think of anything else that would make sense in his case. Either way, hope it's just a rumor and he's okay.

You're right. It's real. Guess we can change the thread title now.

Redskins Insider - Redskins lineman Mike Williams expected to miss season because of blood clots

Redskins lineman Mike Williams expected to miss season because of blood clots
Veteran Washington Redskins offensive lineman Mike Williams, who overcame weight problems to become a valuable member of the unit in his first season with the team, is expected to miss the 2010 season because of blood clots near his heart, two people familiar with the situation said late Friday night.

Williams, projected to compete for a starting spot at right guard, was hospitalized recently because the problem, the team sources said. Although Williams has been released from the hospital, the organization is concerned that his condition could be career-threatening and likely will keep him off the field for at least the upcoming season, which gets underway July 29 when the team begins its first training camp under Coach Mike Shanahan.

Williams did not immediately return a text message to his cellphone Friday night. Speaking on behalf of the organization, Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined to comment on Williams's medical status.

The loss of Williams would be a significant blow to an offensive line in transition in the Redskins' first season under Shanahan, who also is the head of the team's football operation. Considered a bust as a tackle after being drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills, Williams resurrected his career after being moved to guard with the Redskins last season.

Williams, 30, has a promising future in the league as a guard, Shanahan said shortly after taking control of the organization. The former University of Texas all-American was expected to compete with newcomer Artis Hicks at right guard, and probably would have played considerably even if he filled a reserve role.

The fourth overall pick in the 2002 draft, Williams had been out of football for two seasons and last played in the 2005 regular season before the Redskins signed him as a free agent before the 2009 season. He struggled in pass protection at tackle but provided a physical presence at guard. Shanahan and his staff liked what they saw on film and the team rewarded Williams with a two-year contract.

After weighting about 410 pounds when he joined Washington, Williams last month said he was down to about 330. During the team's offseason program, Williams served as a mentor to rookie left tackle Trent Williams, whom the Redskins selected fourth overall in the three-day April draft.

Damn that doesn't sound good. This isn't good for our o-line depth. Before if a tackle got hurt, Williams could play guard and Hicks could move out to tackle. Now it looks like we might be back to Heyer as the the top backup tackle and like Chad Rinehart as the top backup guard.

Crap I forgot about that. I was actually thinking that the only good thing to come out of this was keeping another young Guard among Edwin Williams, Erik Cook, and Chad Rinehart. Had Williams been healthy two of those guys would have been released, now only one will be released. However it sucks that the Mike Williams comeback story ends here. At least they found it in time. I don't think I could handle another Redskin passing before their time is up.

That's a damn shame. Guy his worked his ass off (literally) to make a comeback. Tough loss for him and the team. This is Rinehart's chance to really step it up and take over that position now

I believe that blood clots near the heart increase the risk of a heart attack and/or a stroke

your right "this isn't good" but hicks could still move out to tackle and rinehart could fill the guard spot. they don't have to bring heyer in.

What a shame for Big Mike. He worked so hard to get back and then his body betrayed him.

Is it me our does our OL in recent years seem cursed by health problems, both normal and exceptional?
