Cool stuff dude. I dont collect military surplus, but I do like antique military rifles. I have right now a 1943 Mosin Nagant with a period correct scope, and I am in the process of buying a M1 Garand Carbine...

Nice collection man, seriously.

Re: Anyone collect military surplus stuff?

My mosin is my favorite rifle of all. My dad got it for me for my 25th birthday. It came with all of the original tools, oil can, sling, and it has a working bayonet.

The one i got had never been fired. Rifle is very accurate, I am able to fire 1" groups at 100 yards. Scope needs fine tuning i think, at about 250 yards it seems hit or miss sometimes. Do yourself a big favor and buy the american made, non-corrosive ammo. The old russian surp is very cheap and very available, but it makes cleanup messy. I've shot about 100 rounds of the non-corrosive type, and the inside stays fairly clean. The difference to me was night and day.

I only see 3 types of bayonets.

Re: Anyone collect military surplus stuff?

Corrosive ammo is no big deal if you understand it properly. The salt in the primer is what attracts moisture = corrosion/rust. I just bring the popular solution which is a bottle of Windex and spray down the bore and the bolt then do my regular cleaning, then oil.
Its really quite easy.
A few years ago when it was ultra cheap I bought a few thousand rounds of surplus 7.62x54R and continue to shoot it.

Yeah i have several boxes of "brown bear" that i bought online. Have been using the windex on it since i first got it. I also found a great site online7.62x54r.net where i learned alot about care of the rifle, and its history and all that. pretty informative and the people are super helpful.

Ok cool. It's great to find another person on the warpath who shares my enjoyment of mosin nagants....

The Mauser bayonets are similar, especially the scabbard.
There are bayos in that picture for Russian 91/30's, Yugo M48, Czech 98/22, Yugo 24/47's and Turkish 1938 long and short.

Here's a typical "spam can" of the surplus 7.62x54R I bought.
This can happens to be Albanian.

You'll also notice the difference in the barrel rings. Some are extended and some are not. They will only fit on their respective guns.

Three reasons:

1. Because I can.
2. Because I can.
3. For when the Zombie Apocalypse happens.

If you house ever catches on fire you need to warn all your neighbors to run and stop the fire truck a block back.

That's funny but I guess it could be an issue if something happened.

It's not as dangerous as you'd think. When ammo gets hot enough to explode, they act like miniature bombs rather than bullets. It doesn't really project the bullet, like it would if fired from a gun. When loaded in a gun, the energy created from detonating the cartridge has only one way out (at your target). When it's not loaded in a gun, there is nothing limiting the escape of the energy, so it dissipates much more quickly, and with less concentration. Often times, the brass shrapnel from the shell thrown during the explosion is more dangerous than the bullet. (The bullet has more mass, so the shell will be propelled away from the bullet).
