To those who want Brunell to restructure:

In another thread, several posters wondered why Brunell hasn't restructured his deal to lower his cap number. There's a very good reason.

If he was to restructure without taking a paycut, we would be basically turning a portion of his 2005 earnings into signing bonus. While that would lower his cost for this year, it would also increase the cap hit when he is finally cut - and rest assured, he will be cut. Brunell signed a seven-year deal with an $8.6 million bonus. His base salary this year is only $1.5 million, which means that only about 700k could be converted into bonus - but it means that (hypothetically) the cap hit for cutting him next year goes from $5.75 million to $6.4 million, which we will then scream bloody murder about.

Now, if you are talking about a pay cut, then I'm all for it. Now get Brunell to agree.

Yes - paycut I think people want. No sense in pushing off the money we owe him - just means longer to cut him!

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

I'd be happier with job cut, at his expense. We don't need him, draft a low round prospect and let the new guy ride the pine for a few years.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

they can rework his deal pretty easy.

current deal

sal $4,000.00 $5,200.00 $6,400.00 $7,600.00 $8,800.00
sb $1,433.33 $1,433.33 $1,433.33 $1,433.33 $1,433.33

release fee $7,666.67 $5,733.33 $4,300.00 $2,866.67 $1,433.33

new deal
sal $540.00 $5,200.00 $6,400.00 $7,600.00 $8,800.00

cap hit $3,165.33 $7,325.33 $8,525.33 $9,725.33 $10,925.33
release fee $11,126.67 $8,501.33 $6,376.00 $4,250.67 $2,125.33

saves almost 2.8 this year...except i think the deadline is passed for making such a deal.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

of course if we cut him post june 1 he'd cost us 1.433 mil this year and 5.733 next year. thats not too bad.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

If they need a little breathing room to sign draft picks or other players closer to the season, sure, push a little bit till next year.
Of course the best scenario would be for him to take a pay cut, but I seriously doubt he would do it.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

he's not going to do that. if he is that good of a person i would feel bad taking money from him honestly.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

Signing Brunell was the worst FA move ever. He even cost us a draft pick!!!

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

Restructuring Brunel would be stupid. It only makes sense to restructure people who you see on the team long term. That would just make a bad cap deal worse.

Seems you skipped over 2005 in your numbers. Brunell's 2005 cap hit is only $3.433M.

Re: To those who want Brunell to restructure:

Brunell considers himself a starter and is not about to accept a pay cut. This is a situation we will have to live with. Be great if we could trade him.

juding by his salary, looks like he is gone after this season. His cap hit for cutting him next year is about what we would pay to keep him
