Redskins free agent signings thread part II
Discuss the Skins FA moves here
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave a B, only because I'm still worried about the secondary. We made the right decision on passing on the very high priced safeties, leaving us with Clark and Meriweather. But we are still thin at safety.
That said, I'm acknowledging that's a bit of a nitpick. We made many moves to get deeper in the trenches, and probably more importantly we got much better on special teams. The Jason Hatcher and DeSean Jackson signings were done at reasonable prices, so we haven't sacrificed long-term financial flexibility. Overall, this seemed to be an offseason where we looked at free agency as a way to supplement a roster, not build one. Now we look to the draft where the team can earn their way to an A offseason with a smart draft. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I will go with an A for FA. I like what we did and the prudence in our moves. Solid FA signings. We didn't break the bank, and improved on offense and defense.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave a B, thought they made alot of solid moves. Hopeful on the DJax signing.
My concern is still the Oline....... |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I would choose B- or C+ in the poll if I could. The most positive part is that we mostly have tried to build the roster from the bottom up, which should result in an NFL necessity: quality depth. Three cheers for the FO for this.
The Hatcher signing was mostly good, but IMO we would have gotten more long-term bang for our buck by nabbing Linval Joseph instead of the 32-year-old Hatcher. I won't repeat my views regarding DJax. The bright side is that he should put up huge numbers and allow Garcon and Roberts to thrive, too. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave an A, because you can't address every single need in free agency nor should you. The 'skins addressed enough to open the draft wide open to address other needs.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I probably would have given a B+ if that was an option. We had a very 'anti-Redskins' free agent period. Started out slowly, under the radar. Roberts, Lavaou on the first day and even Porter later in the week were pretty consistent with what we've done post Vinny. Younger players with some pedigree but upside. Hatcher was a good fit for the defense and should make an impact. Jackson is obviously the home run and it was possible because of our prudence early on.
As for our own FA, we brought back pretty much who I wanted and thought we would, with the exception of Moss. Bringing Clark back is a nice locker room piece but I hope Thomas is starting over him by midseason. Hoping we address S, RT, ILB in the draft. I'm not as worried about the OL as some people, it's been adequately addressed IMO. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave them a B. I'd say its more like a B+ most of the strength coming from the DJax signing and the focus on LBs. Had they gotten the deal done with La Puente, probably would've kicked that up to an A.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I'm the lone "C" in there, but it's mostly because I have concerns about both the secondary and the O Line. Those can certainly be addressed through the draft, but we're not there and the questions asks about free agency.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
A, we got a difference maker, and we addressed all our needs outside RT, though obviously ryan clark isn't the kind of safety (old) that we wanted.
if we draft a RT or S at 34 i'd be pretty happy, or OG/DL would be fine. no team in the league is perfect, so you just need to do what you can to improve and hope that your strengths prove to overcome your weaknesses. we still need to see how it works out with the new pieces though. that's always the fine print. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave them a B. Cant address everything in FA, but they did enough to warrant a good grade. Probably should give them an A for not overspending like we have seen from this team in the past. I liked the approach of depth and a couple of starters over just 2 or 3 starters and nothing else since no cap space or doing a ton of restructures and putting us back in cap purgatory.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I'm going with an A also. I love the Clark signing and pulling of DJAX was damn impressive. We haven't went crazy w money either so I'M happy with the OS so far.

Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave the team an A for the Free agency, they filled the depth needed in key areas, while weakening other teams in the division. We now have a somewhat clear direction heading into free agency.
Having that speed element in Jackson will greatly help the rest of the receivers. Jason Hatcher will enhance the rush ability from the D-Line. Meriwether and Clark may not be ideal but I think it will work for what the're asked to do. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
Solid B.
Jackson brings the grade way up, prior to that it feels like we just filled out some depth more than anything. Nothing wrong with that of course, we need it. |

I'll join you Shaun Lauvao: I couldn't have told you who he is before FA so I can't say good or bad on him Jason Hatcher: Had probably his best year in a contract year in a 4-3 Andre Roberts: Solid pickup, but how much of his success depended on Larry Fitzgerald DeSean Jackson: Stud, but comes with baggage Tracy Porter: Solid veteran, but best days probably behind him Chris Baker: Smart re-signing Rob Jackson: He's as good as he'll ever be Daryl Sharpton/Andrew Heyward: Love that they added special teams players, but they need to find a starting ILB. I'm not sold Keenan is the guy Clifton Geathers: Dime a dozen type player A lot of question marks |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
Don't forget Akeem Jordan; he'd be a serviceable starter at ILB.

One of the new guys is in hot water already.

maybe that's why they cut him in KC. the skins may have already known when they got him.

They probably did know it was coming. These things don't happen overnight. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I give us a B- or C+ with the potential for an A.
While I was kinda dissapointed in not getting a Safety, I liked that we stayed patient and didnt overpay. (Although that TJ Ward contract would have been nice) Luvavo while I didnt know him, I have some friends who are Baltimore fans who say that he was an excellent run blocker and man handled Haloti Ngata a couple of times when they played. Andre Roberts and DeSean Jackson give us a top 3 WR corp in my opinion, my question is for Jason Hatcher, how will we use him? He had at most 4.5 sacks in the 3-4 with Dallas. I also want to wait until the draft to give my full grade. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave FA a B grade, everything I've read about Lauvao is he's a good pass blocker.

Lavuao, to me, is the biggest mistake of Free Agency. He may well be a decent pass-blocker, but the fact remains that linemen far better than him got deals worth very little more. The FO must really love Lavuao's potential on our team, giving him 4 million a year. I like pretty much every other move made, although there were a few they didn't make that I wish they would have. The best part about it is that we didn't give one or two huge contracts; rather, we signed a lot of depth, which gives us flexibility in the draft. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I gave a grade of B. I believe secondary is our biggest and most glaring need. Although we did bring in some guys, I was hoping we would take a long hard look at at least one of the top FA safety prospects. If we draft a safety in the second or third round and they end up a started I might be inclined to change to an A.

In fact our secondary sucked so bad last year teams were passing most of time against us, so in turn we spent a good amount of time in our nickle and dime. Both of those packages have 4 down lineman. We could have a much improved pass rush with Jason Hatcher playing where ever he plays best.,,,add Orakpo, Kerrigan, Cofield and a healthy Brandon Jenkins...we have the beginnings of a healthy pass rush. Who do you double team? Orakpo needs to step up his play and develop a second pass rush move. All this questionable talk of Hasslett "turning him loose" this coming season. We will see. For $11M this coming season, he better have a big year or he can go. |

I know we dont run that exclusively, still wanting to see how exactly we use him. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
Without a limit on the type of impact one player can make on the grade I say an easy A. For me the Desean Jackson signing is the type where if this was a college course you could get a 60 on the final exam and still get an A in the class. However for a well rounded view I'd say B to B+. I wish they were a little more aggressive up to this point with safety and OL.

Offseason grade
Wow, I don't agree with that grade. How do we get that low a grade on some of the signings! DJax should be way higher! Same with Hatcher!

Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
Before I start I do not like the signing of DJax. He is a gifted athlete; he is also a locker room cancer. I think he will have a good year and then next year he will start to complain and he will be gone in 3 years.
I am grading on a curve and giving them a “B” because signing DJax gives them a dominate group. If everybody stays healthy, they should have the best receiving corps in the league. Depending on the draft this grade could slide up or down. We have added some depth but are still missing some Oline help. We still have questions in at middle linebacker and secondary. Hopefully last year’s draft stays healthy and can play some football. I could also see KC being shipped to the Browns for a 2nd round pick. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
I have a feeling they're going to run a lot of defensive sets with a line consisting of Rak, Hatcher, Cofield, and Kerrigan. Personally, I feel this is going to be a ridiculous set up and hopefully will lead to tons of pressures/sacks.

NFL Free Agent Grades: WalterFootball.com
Lots of head scratchers in that list. For example -Mario Manningham is rated as an A, while Riley Cooper is a C, and DJax is graded at a D? That's just ridiculous. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
DJax is going to kick ass this season. RG3 is going to love the deep ball, and Morris will have a career year.
At the end of the day, who cares about some stupid rankings some nobody grades it as. |

NFL Free Agent Grades: WalterFootball.com
I know Denver and New England are respected franchises, but to me their FA signings are basically the types of signings that our team used to make under Vinny. Overpaying for stars past their primes. |

NFL Free Agent Grades: WalterFootball.com
He's right about Lavuao, and perhaps Porter too, unless he starts and plays better than Josh Wilson. But he's just plain wrong about overpaying for Hatcher. First of all, he's not a normal 32 year old, as he should have a number of good years left; second, the contract has no guaranteed money after this year, and the Redskins will be able to escape the deal easily in a couple of years. Sports Illustrated gave this signing an A-. And on Chris Baker, he looked at the salary and then directly at what Baker's done, instead of at looking at how he finished last year, and what he's projected to do this season. I wonder why he didn't talk about the biggest signing of them all? Maybe because he actually liked it and knew that wouldn't go well with the troll theme? |
Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
In terms of raw value per dollar spent, they probably deserve a C or D, but I'm okay with some inefficient spending if the team can improve itself at need positions. Given how inept that the pass rush by the DL was last year, and how much the receivers struggled to get open, and that they were able to retain all the players they wanted to, I'm willing to give a solid B.
If there was a way to fix all of those needs without inefficient free agent spending, I'd grade a little harder, but they really had to make some major changes and don't have a first round pick to bank on. Taking a pair of risks on Hatcher and Jackson while hoping for the best seems more reasonable than trying to take the same team into next year and just trying to survive. |
Brandon Moore, no more.

Re: Redskins free agent signings thread part II
F - they failed to address FS or RT which were the two biggest needs and positions I do not think you can plug-in a 2nd or 3rd round rookie to start right away.
Of course I love the idea of what D jax can bring to the field but i did not think we needed him .. at all. its like buying a spoiler for our banged up 1998 honda civic. biggest FA addition imo is a healthy RG3. if he is healthy, its lights out on our comp. |
