Ohalete refuses to give #26 to Portis

I could swear I saw Portis with the #26 Redskins jersey during the press conference that introduced him. I guess they had not asked Ohalete first.
I like Ohalete, but he needs a dose of reality. Portis is a 2 x 1,500 yard RB, one of the league leaders in TD's and a probowl player.
Ohalete is a good special teams player and a serviceable yet average Safety.
We need to draft Sean Taylor, so Ohalete realizes the pecking order.
Ohalete should give the #26 to Portis.

JWsleep 03-27-2004 01:12 PM

Give it up, iffy! Portis is the real deal. If he wants 26, give it to him.

Gmanc711 03-27-2004 01:40 PM

I'm gonna disagree. I think if he wants to keep the number, its his to have, he was here first. I really dont want to Piss off Portis, so I dont really care or have a dire need to press the issue. I just think since he was here first, its his #. Think of it this way, if your in High School and your a Senior on the Varsity team, and yer nothing special, and this all- world kid comes up form the JV Squad who just happens to have your number and wants it, would you give it to him?

offiss 03-27-2004 01:45 PM

Iffy should give it up if portis want's it but I think portis should compensate him for doing so, portis right now is on track to a hall of fame carreer and i could see the reasoning behind wanting to keep the same number, Iffy on the other hand is going to be fighting just to stay on the field, either way it's only a number it doesn't make the man.

Jamaican'Skin 03-27-2004 02:01 PM

Iffy might not even be on the field if we get Mr. Taylor

saden1 03-27-2004 03:17 PM

The honorable thing to do in Portis' part is to ask Ohalete if he can have his jersey. So long as Ohalete is on the team the jersey is his to give away not the Redskins!

Ghost 03-27-2004 03:27 PM

Portis says Ohalete won't even discuss the issue, like he's taking a hard line. To me that sounds pretty ridiculous, unless he's angling for a financial incentive. Or maybe there are a bunch of little kids and family members somewhere wearing "Ohalete #26" jerseys and he doesn't want to disappoint them. When Iffy first came aboard, announcers and other people would mispronounce his name and I remember hearing that it was pissing off the Ohalete clan. I think respect is a big thing with Iffy and his family ... maybe that's a factor in this.

Skins fan 44 03-27-2004 03:31 PM

Why cant Iffy do what John Krok done. I rembember that someone bought his number for money a couple of cases of beer.

BrudLee 03-27-2004 03:38 PM

You know what?

Trade him.

Ohalete is a very good safety, but we appear to be willing to draft Taylor. I don't think Portis deserves the number more than Iffy, or that either player is bigger than the team, but his unwillingness to discuss the issue is childish and divisive. He's an undrafted free agent who could likely garner us a fourth round draft pick.

saden1 03-27-2004 04:05 PM

None of us know what is exactly going on. Personally, I think Iffy has a valid reasons for not wanting to give that number up whatever those reasons might be.

Let say you have a nice PC in your office and some new guy with super skills comes in and he wants your nice PC. He doesn't ask you but instead goes to the System Admin and says i want that PC. The system admin comes back to you and says the new guy wants your PC. What would be your reaction? Plus, there might be other value attached to your PC other than the fact that it is nice. I mean all your files might be very important to you and you can't be bothered to move over to a new machine.

rome108 03-27-2004 08:45 PM

let 'em thumb wrestle for it.

cpayne5 03-27-2004 08:55 PM

It's probably Iffy's last stand. This will be the last memorable thing he does as a Skin.

Hail to the Redskins 03-27-2004 08:58 PM

And so what happens if we draft #26 ... Sean Taylor??

We gonna have a 3-man Royal Rumble for the number??

Ohelete had it first... Portis wants it... and I'm sure Taylor is fond of it too.... pretty interesting situation brewing. I wonder if coaches or management will get involved?

cpayne5 03-27-2004 09:05 PM

Not sure, but I think there are league rules about such situations.

Daseal 03-27-2004 09:22 PM

I personally think it's Iffys number. Portis is great, but he's also is coming to a new team. If LaVar was #26 who would be willing to give it to Portis? I mean, as someone said ahead, if someone took your piece of equipment in the work place it would piss you off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Taylor and Portis together at Miami for 1 year? Or am I a year off?

Ghost 03-27-2004 09:31 PM

I bet Iffy would give it up for ten grand. I know I would.

Well, you've already made a MaddenSkins with Portis as #26 so that should be the deciding factor :D

SmootSmack 03-27-2004 09:34 PM

What did Hasselbeck get in exchange for giving up #8 to Brunell?
What did Hasselbeck get in exchange for giving up #8 to Brunell?
A roster spot?

:laughing-

Daseal 03-27-2004 09:37 PM

He probably got a trade or a cut =p

SmootSmack 03-27-2004 11:46 PM

Interesting to note that Iffy also refused to give up #26 to Chad Morton last year. The number must mean a lot to him but ironically enough he didn't even wear that number at USC. He was #31

skinsfanthru&thru 03-28-2004 02:35 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Taylor and Portis together at Miami for 1 year? Or am I a year off?
I'm pretty sure u r right about that and they were both at miami for one year when they beat Nebraska for the national title. Atleast I think that was the year they were teammates.

lefty 03-28-2004 05:44 AM

i hope to god he gives it up. my mate is on his way back from the states with a portis 26 shirt for me (not the easiest thing to get hold of over here!!)

BleedBurgundy 03-28-2004 07:26 AM

Portis needs to be a man on this one

No way Ohalete should give up his number. Ask for it? No, not even that. The only way Portis should get #26 is if Ohalete volunteered it. You don't come on to a new team and start taking someone else's number. I hate f__ckin' me-first athletes and I sure hope someone helps Portis get his head on straight. The camraderie that Gibbs is bringing back to the 'skins doesn't mesh with that kind of player. :soapbox:

Gmanc711 03-28-2004 09:13 AM

Well, I wouldnt go that far, bleedburgandy. I could understand the fact that Portis would like #26, but I dont see him making all that big of a deal out of it.

Hail to the Redskins 03-28-2004 01:45 PM
Well, you've already made a MaddenSkins with Portis as #26 so that should be the deciding factor :D
Hey... you'll notice... I have a Sean Taylor #26 Maddenskin too... Oh well, I'll just remake 'em when we get this all straightened out... ;)

I do need to get back crankin on my Maddenskins.... I have a SWEET new Coles one where he is jumping over Champ Bailey, making a catch on a long pass... I'll try and put that up today...

SKINSnCANES 03-28-2004 09:06 PM

Drafting Sean Taylor would make Iffy expendable, but Taylor wears #26 as well. CP would take the number before Taylor had a shot at it but either way they both deserve the number more than Iffy.

In his defense I know I can be a stubborn person and I wouldnt want to give up my number. But for a cut of a 50 million dollar contract I might change my mind.

skinsguy 03-28-2004 09:28 PM

I don't see a big deal about the number anyways! I might if Portis has been around for years and has already proven himself as a hall of famer, but didn't Montana change his number when he went to K.C.? I could be wrong on that, but I thought he had changed his number to #17 or something like that.

#26 to me just seems like a weird number for a RB anyways. What about the numbers for Brunell and Hasselbeck? If TH stays with the team, we know who's gonna wind up with #8!

SmootSmack 03-28-2004 09:52 PM

Hasselbeck switched to #4. And I think you're right Joe Montana switched to #19 in KC

SKINSnCANES 03-28-2004 10:06 PM

Another reason Portis has going for him is the fact that the Redskins wanted him and traded a lot to get him. He wasnt a free agent pick up, he was part of a blockbuster trade and if they are going to go through all that effort to get him they might as well throw in the number.

dieselhog 03-29-2004 08:37 AM

Was Portis in camp? What number did he wear?

Coles wore number 87 with the Jets but swapped without fuss to number 80 on his arrival here as Rod already had 87.... ooopppsss, sorry, I keep forgetting, Coles has CLASS.

:food-smil

MTK 03-29-2004 08:47 AM

Portis was wearing #3 all weekend, but that will obviously have to change.

Skins fan 44 03-29-2004 09:13 AM

Portis should not made an issue of the whole thing. He should of just asked him and if he said no get another number. There are other good numbers to wear that good RBs have worn.

manichispanic 03-29-2004 09:23 AM

Iffy has gained a bunch of respect last year when he didnt want to give it to Morton, but even more so now that he won't back down to Portis.......Its Iffy's #, why should he, Portis got the money, so unless some of the green is changing hands, Iffey should keep it

Gmanc711 03-29-2004 09:41 AM

Did Portis really make that big of a deal out of it? I have heard a comment here and there, but form what I heard it wasent really that big of an issue.

AnonEmouse 03-29-2004 10:33 AM

I get the impression it isn't an issue. Apparently Portis suggested they box for it - yeah that's really going to happen, I can't imagine ANY coach letting his players beat the crap out of each other for a #!

:stop:

I agree that Coles has class, but its a little early to be suggesting that Portis doesn't and will make a big deal of this. lets let it play out before passing judgement

Skinsguy,
I might be wrong, but #16 for Kansas City is a retired number. I believe Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner Len Dawson used #16. The only SuperBowl KC has ever won. So to say Montana is a better person than Portis is wrong.
I seem to recall a discussion between Montana and Dawson about the KC number 16. Montana never used it so Dawson must have told Montana to go........
A little different than this situation.

MTK 03-29-2004 10:48 AM

From what I've read and heard Portis hasn't made a big deal out of it, he's always referred to it in a joking manner, it's not like he's ticked off and pouting about it.

If I was him I'd take another # and move on. He's already offered Iffy an undisclosed amount of money, if he doesn't take it there's not much else you can do.

SKINSnCANES 03-29-2004 03:05 PM

Portis said something along the lines of "Tell him Portis dont look good in no number 3" or somethign like that. We'll see what happens I guess.
