Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Rumors are spreading like wildfire in Texas that the Cowboys may cut La'Roi Glover and/or Greg Ellis. Sounds crazy? Well, the Cowboys just signed DT Jason Ferguson, drafted DT/DE Marcus Spears, and drafted DE DeMarcus Ware. Moreover, the Cowboys are shifting to a 3-4 defense and with the pricey Ellis and Glover already on the roster, the additions of Spears, Ware, and Ferguson may spell the end of one of either Glover or Ellis' careers in Dallas.
Rumors coming out of Fox Sports News (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67043), Cowboys blogs (granted, they're just blogs) and Profootballtalk.com (not exactly a shining example of journalism) indicate that one or both Glover and Ellis will be cut. These rumors, are bolstered by the above-referenced signings. Moreover, a 3-4 defense requires a big NT and Glover is more of a pass-rushing, tweaner DT at just 280 pounds. Considering that Glover is scheduled to earn a salary of $4.7 million (for a $6 million cap figure) and has gone to the Pro Bowl the past five seasons, it's unlikely that the team could afford or Glover would tolerate him sitting on the bench. My question therefore is, do we go after either Ellis or Glover if they are cut? They won't come cheap (which will likely mean cutting someone we don't want to lose) and they're getting old. But, they're studs. As tempting as I find it, I don't think we should sign them due to their cost/age. What do you guys think? |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
This is an economics question more than anything else. Glover is a better DT than anyone on the Skins' roster at the moment - including Cornelius Griffin. Ellis is at least as good as - and probably better than any DE on the roster.
But to sign them - and the draft picks - will mean cutting a bunch of other folks on the roster. To make room for Glover and a fat signing bonus and salary, you will have to cut more than some free agent signee who was brought in as training camp cannon fodder. So, the coaching staff/front office mavens need to figure out the economics of this situation and see if they can afford to try to get these guys into the fold and who will have to be jettisoned in order to make room for them. I suspect it will not be an easy fit, but until I knew the economics and the cap implications, I couldn't ignore two guys both of whom would upgrde the DL. Tough call in my mind... |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
yeah that would be great but i don't think we can afford it, but if we do man what a defense, unstoppable.
I would like to adress offense if we can afford it!, one dominant player on o-line is what i want, 3-4 probowlers if we get another O-lineman to take the inside job. that would make the offseason a success in my eyes Does anyone know the range the cap will be at after cuts and signing players. I know no one KNOWS but just an idea. are we under allittle or over alot? |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
I think this would be an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation. I think that Ellis at DE might come cheaper than Glover. If it happens, I say we proceed with caution and give them the same deal we gave every other free agent. Lay down some groundwork and let them pick.

It's a shame we can't upgrade the D-line because our backs are up against the cap. I can't envision the capologists coming up with a solution. Oh well. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
NOW who wants to cut Bowen?:)
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Interesting, I was thinking of starting a similar thread but with Simeon Rice ($10 million) and Anthony McFarland ($4 million)
Again, as has already been mentioned here it's more a business question than a football question at this point |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Adding Glover would give us a nasty pair of DTs, and Ellis would easily be our top DE.
If either or both become available, I'd think the Redskins would have to give them a long, hard look. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
If Canuck is around, do you think that cutting Gardner, Bowen and Morton would give us enough possible room for either/or?
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
With the way deals are backloaded it wouldn't cost us much this year for one of these guys.
With the way deals are backloaded it wouldn't cost us much this year for one of these guys.
True, but what would it cost us in the future? I'd love to get either one of them, but I don't want to break the bank for a Cowboy. :) |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
I don't like the idea of long time cowpies joining the team but it's hard to deny either guy, especially glover, would be a pretty decent upgrade and addition to the d-line rotation if the price is right.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
The problem is, there is no reason for Glover or Ellis to sign a cheap, short-term, or incentive-based deal. They're still young enough (if somewhat long in the tooth) to get monster deals and they know it. They put up big numbers and play big as well. Plus, pass-rushing D-linemen are among the highest paid players. Someone will pick them up for 5+ years and Glover will get at least an $7 million signing bonus.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
if we would get somebody i wish it was simeon rice or glover. if we are going to sacrifice our money it better damn be worth it. i know that we don't have the money but we can cut some players to make room lik barrow, gardner, morton, hall, bowen and probably mccants--i will like mccants though, but anything to get us to the playoffs.

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
We need to save any money we may have left and spend it on any upgrade we can do for our offense. If I remember correctly that was our problem last year. I don't know which position we could up grade now but that should be were we look if we are thinking about spending any more money.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Problem is, there aren't TOO many offensive upgrades I could see coming available. And honestly, I am happy with our receiving corps. Anyone who WOULD be an upgrade would come at WAAAY too high of a cost.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Of course the offense could always use some more help, but if a high quality d-lineman like one of these guys became available, you'd be crazy to not at least consider them.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Right, and I'd love to see us pursue Ellis to have him and Daniels on the ends.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
I'd really be excited if they were to get released because Ellis has that Kearse-like build.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Any of these guys leaving DAL makes thier team weaker and that's good enough for me. :oink:
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
True and that's something we ain't even gotta' pay for!
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
You guys do realize that you're talking about GREG ELLIS!! If he's better than anyone we currently have it is not by much, he had all of 10 sacks last year which I understand would have led our team but let's stop all the "Kearse-like build" comments and come to our senses.
1. He's a former Cowboy and not even a very good one at that. 2. He's a former Cowboy for a reason and they were 6-10 last year too. 3. He's a former Cowboy, nuff said. But Glover, well that's a different story. The guy must be an all-time head case because he's always making plays and always wearing out his welcome, the Saints let him walk for nothing and now the Cowboys are doing the same. I think he'd make Griffin even more effective, but I'd take Cornelius because he's younger, bigger and just as mean. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
I could care less about the former Cowboy thing anymore. It's not like back in the old days before free agency where there was an actual sense of team loyalty.
I'm not saying the guy is a Kearse clone, but he has registered at least 7.5 sacks in 4 of his 7 seasons played. All I'm looking at is if we were to add him, he's instantly our best pass rushing DE. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
agreed matty, and remember, he's a cowboy now, but guess where he came from...
thats right, he's a tarheel baby. tarheels are always welcome to my teams :) |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Just like Matty said, there's no real sense of loyalty except to the Benjamins.
AND we all know how players WE used to have screw us when we play their former teams. I'd like to see that work in our favor for once. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
you said that. i love it when teams in our division lose key players(one less player to worry about). guys you have to at least consider those guys i mean they are talented like crazy and could give us an edge. you can win games on defense ask b-more and along with that we have cp who shoud break runs like he did in denver.

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
I feel I'd make a play on Glover, I'd pass on Ellis. Hopefully one of them, if cut would be bitter over the breakup and sign with us for cheap to play "them boys" twice a year for revenge.
I'm also intrested in Coren Robinson, Peter Warrick and Ty Law. Robinson may just need a change of scene like Springs did last year. Ty Law intreges me because no one has signed as of yet. You know he has a chip on his shoulder, and if he heals to atleast 80% of what he was before the injury, He'll be a stud. Either as a nickel, safety or even a starter. Not to mention the impact he would have on the rookie and Taylor. I just hate that he's with the postons, I think we'd probraly have him by now if he was with any other agents. Warrick has speed and great hands, he's a question mark because he's never trully proved himself. If he could get close to his college form, look out because he was a true beast. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Curious, I live in Texas nothing in our paper, checked local websites etc. haven't heard anything..........
The ony news on Glover was making him a back-up instead of a starter. The paper said that while he accepted his news role and said the right things.......this may create a problem later on with Glover and the Cowboys.............. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
ty law is a big risk wanting big money... he's been a stud when healthy, but we dont really have a place with his injury/age/demands/agents... if anything he'd show ST how to hold out for more money.

I'd sign him to a one-year deal and see what he can do since his premium wouldn't be too high. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Warrick is interesting since he has the potential to be a star, but (except for 2003) he's been pretty much a big bust. He'll get a hard look by many teams, but we'd have a shot to sign him for a realtively low price.
Law is old, he will ask for too much money, and he's got a lingering injury to boot. If we didn't like Gardner because he dropped passes, we don't like bad-character guys with tons of off the field problems, and we don't like to overpay, I'd pass on Robinson. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Don't get law mixed up with his agents. He has done nothing but perform on the field. before his injury he was a top 3 corner. He could be plugged in at the various corner and safety positions. My only concern is whether he would become like Barrow and not touch the field after signing the dotted line.
I've read that the bengals may not even release Warrick As for Robinson, he'd be got for us. He's faster than Gardner. I think the frustrating situation in his personal life may have added to his lack of consentration in catching . |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
You can mix up Law and his agents - his gripes and their gripes and whining are one and the same. Law is a damn good CB, but he's old. In one of his few moments of insightfulness, Len Pastabelly said good teams don't pay for what a player has done in the past, they pay for what he will do for a team in the future. If we're smart, we won't sign players who are on the decline and who will ask to be overpaid.
Koren Robinson is an alcoholic. While I don't condemn the guy as a person for loving the drink too much, I don't want him signed to our team. He misses practices, gets arrested, needs to enter rehab, drops too many passes, will want to be overpaid, and so I don't want to pursue him. You're right that Warrick may not be released, but it's possible that Robinson won't be either. We're just speculating both of them will be. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
well robinson has been released, and i hope warrick will too. peter warrick would be a nice pickup, he could probably be our #2 receiver. robinson will find a home and a new team to deal with his shit. i think next year he's gonna get suspended for drug abuse too.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Which #2 receiver would he be? We already have 3. :)
And mooby I asked you this when you first joined, but is the mooby you speak of from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? |

I'm hoping Warrick is released and it's very possible he will be. The Bengals have Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmenzadeh (sp?), Kelly Washington, and some 3rd rounder they got this past draft. |
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
we dont need warrick, unless its a premium WR it's not an upgrade...
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Given the latest in the ST drama, I might re-consider my vote on at least looking at Glover or Ellis if one of them are released.
|
Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
too bad hall retired, looks like he could've gotten some real playing time...
