Moss, Patten, and...
With opening day just a couple of weeks away who do you guys think will be the #3 receiver on opening day. Not saying for the rest of the season necessarily, just to start the season.
My guess is Thrash. I thought Taylor Jacobs would lock it down when the preseason started, but now I'm not so sure. I kind of hope it's not Antonio Brown, because I want to save him for special teams where I think he'll be invaluable. Dante Hall-esque Anyhow, as the great Matty would say "Vote bitches!" |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
i'm gonna go with thrash too. he's a good #3. i would like to see antonio brown at #3, given his speed i think he could be a good deep receiver, or a good slot receiver, but he's invaluable on special teams.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
most likely thrash, but i would liek to see either mccants or brown get the playing time.
but thrashes experience will give him the edge. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Gotta go with Thrash too. None of the other guys showed enough yet. Also, with Thrash and Patten, we actually have guys that can hold on to the damn ball. Nice change from all the drops we were so accustomed to.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Gotta go with Thrash. He earns it playing special teams too and he has reliable hands and fights for yardage. I like Dyson, too however, due to his size and I think he and Cooley will be a nice package in the red zone.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
It is funny that we all are voting Thrash, I remember about 2 months ago someone, I dont remember who, was saying that Thrash was going to get cut....
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Thrash my friends, and i like it.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
thrash has been playing #3 so far, and he's been good enough to stay there... brown is the only challenge i see right now until jacobs gets healthy enough to try again.
seems like going by past production thrash has had an 800 yard season, so he's a safe bet. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I voted for Dyson, but after considering Brown and Betts hadling all of the return duties, Thrash is the obvious choice. :oink:
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
its getting good, i am gonna get the popcorn and wait to see who comes in second. Clearly if jacobs wasn't injuried with a flu or toe or god knows what i would choose him but right now if i had to choose it would be mccants or dyson, I like mccants for his hight and hope he makes the team over dyson but then again i like me some antonio

Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I picked Jacobs, I think he will play in these next two preseason games and step it up. Dyson would be my next choice.
Why does everyone here have such a hard-on for Brown as a return guy? What has he done that was so special? And comparing him to Daunte Hall....please...when I watched him during the first preseason game he didnt break any tackles and always ran right at the defenders |

His punt return average so far this preseason has to be around 12 yards or something. And on a couple kick returns he's had one man to beat for a TD, but got tripped up by his shoestrings. He's going to break a couple big ones. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Brown always seems to be close to breaking one, and I remember one return he had against Cincy near the sideline where he put a couple of stop and go moves on Cincy defenders that even had my Dad yelling out "wow", and he's not much of a football fan so that should tell you something.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
AND brown doesn't fair catch.... unlike that last guy :( who averaged just about nothing per return with the FCs counting.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Brown did some nice things in the Cinney game and he's going to get better week by week.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Thrash get's my vote....he sort of has that Gary Clark toughness about him. He's definitely a Redskin.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Thrash will likely get the nod to start the season. Jacobs hasn't been healthy enough to earn it. McCants may get more red zone looks if he makes the team, but not the overall 3rd slot. Dyson probably won't make the team. Brown will likely see more return duty than regular work this year.
Thrash is a consistent performer who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. That's going to stand out to Gibbs. Hey, here's a funny idea. Thrash was cut by the Eagles in favor of Pinkston and Mitchell. He's going to have more catches this year than the two of them combined. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I think it is significant that HOF Coach Gibbs singled out Dyson. I'm not ready to back any particular WR, but I can tell you that Brown will start for our STs! Never forget, STs are equally as important as O & D!

jacobs and thrash start on ST too, so does sean taylor (and all 3 are good there), so that's a bit of a moot point ;) |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
During the Cincy game, a graphic came up on the Redskins broadcast network asking whether it will be Antonio Brown or Kevin Dyson as the main return man. I don't think it's even close. It's gotta be Brown by a mile. Dyson's been virtually nonexistant so far.
The thing about Brown is that he always seems to be going absolute full speed. Skinsncanes, just watch Brown's legs on his next return. The guy motors on every return like it's the very last of his career. As far as the #3 receiver, it looks like it's going to be Thrash -- I think Gibbs sees veteran leadership, hard work, dedication, and reliability in Thrash. With Brown as the return man, that leaves just one spot (with presumably only 5 wideouts total on the roster). My guess would be Jacobs gets it, but that seems to be based only on potential, promise, and what a former Redskin cornerback said about how he performs in practice. How that carries over year after year is beyond me, but this season has got to be it for him, unless he can break into the top three. McCants and Dyson will be given their walking papers. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I see it as Thrash but if Jacobs recovers from his toe injury quickly, I think Jacobs could sneak in there or take over the spot a few games into the season.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I also concur with the hardworking, lunchpail, blue collar Thrash.
Jacobs injury and McCants still not showing anything will make Thrash the choice.............. Dyson will be a backup, although I think on occassion Brown may seem some action.. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
James Thrash is my awnser. I just think he puts in the hard work that this coaching staff looks for and I think he'll be rewarded for it. He's a reliable target for what he is. I think he, and everyone knows he isnt a superstar, but he can be quite good when he is used as a #3 type reciver.
I wouldnt be suprised to see Antionio Brown pop that spot either. He has looked very good thusfar in the preseason, although he hasent been playing against the talent Thrash has so far. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I think that Jacobs will be the offical number three. I saw where he started jogging today so it looks like he recovery is coming along well.
I do think we are going to see a steady rotation of Thrash, Jacobs, Brown, and Dyson (?) this season at the third and fourth wideout spots. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Joe Gibbs loves guys who will put it all on the line. Thrash just reaks of a Gibbs soldier.
Joe Gibbs loves guys who will put it all on the line. Thrash just reaks of a Gibbs soldier.
Yea, I noticed that last year when Brunell was letting it all hang out how excited Gibbs was getting. Just joking. I just could not pass that one up.LOL
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Depending on the availability of Jacobs do to his injury I feel Thrash will be # 3 while Jacobs will emerge as the number 3 not too much later.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I say Thrash.
Jacobs will just get hurt again if he plays. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Thrash. Total Gibbs guy, and even though he doesn't have the height, he's tough and durable enough for the possession WR role, at least part of the time. I thought it would be Jacobs, but the injury has held him back....I agree with others that he could take the job a couple weeks in. I think McCants may have a shot too, but he'll probably end up as the #4/5. I think Dyson will be cut due to his age, but will probably play for somebody this year as an injury replacement.
Brown will make the roster as the return man, and barring injuries to the other WR's, I bet he gets about as much time at WR as Morton did at RB last year before he got hurt. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Another question to consider, is if Gibbs has any 4 WR sets in his offense. With Spurrier, it was a stable formation, becuase he did not have TE's or H-backs, but I have not seen a 4WR set yet in the Preseason. I guess the most we could hope for on 3rd and long is 3WRs plus Cooley. It will be hard to get a 4th WR in the game, unless the formation changes at the goal line and they get in a Jacobs, or a McCants who is tall for the "Old Jump Ball Corner Fade play". Otherwise it is Thrash all the way for number 3.
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
Ok, to clarify my previous post and probably to prove my geeky-ness, another reason I bring up the 4WR set formation, is because I have also been playing Madden 06, and the Gibbs playbook does not have a 4WR formation. I know those guys at Madden know everything.....right!
|
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
I thought there were some 4 WR sets in the singleback formation... I could be wrong though since I've only played a few games of '06 so far.

Yeah, there are about 4-5 sets of 4 WR plays under the single back playbook in the Skins arsenal on Madden 06. |
Re: Moss, Patten, and...
For what it is worth--wonder why they only talk about these receivers

But McCants still considers himself in the Redskins' plans because of his ability to outleap defenders in the red zone. "It's hard to overlook me," McCants said. "I'm the biggest one here." But special teams could make the difference. A bad sign: he didn't play any last week and, as of Wednesday, was not told he'd be playing on any units against Pittsburgh Friday night. Santana Moss, 5-10, 190 The quarterbacks have struggled to get the ball to the big-play Moss, in practice and in games. He's caught three passes for 29 yards in the preseason. It appears starter Patrick Ramsey is still adjusting to Moss' speed. But Ramsey lofted a perfect fade to Moss vs. Cincinnati and the receiver didn't turn back in time. Jimmy Farris, 6-foot, 195 He's a longshot. But Farris has received a decent look and has two receptions for 30 yards, both coming in the preseason opener. He was thrown one pass last week. But Farris, who played at Montana, is a solid special teamer, which gives him a slim chance. He played 14 games for Atlanta last season on special teams. --John Keim |
