Can't really blame him. We're just not a place free agents want to play. For now at least. |

I am not arguing that we should have offered him $3 mil. My point is that there were things that we could have done to get him for free rather than spending draft picks.

I'm sure that the Ravens' playoff prospects played a large part in his decision. He also said that he was very impressed by how much the Ravens showed him that they wanted him when he received phone calls from the HC, GM, and even the owner of the team. We could have done that much, at least. Maybe we did. I think that it's likely that they oversold him on what his role would be. On the other hand, all he had to do was to look at their roster to see that they were so deep at WR that he might not see the field that much. Anyway, the whole idea I had of possibly trading for him and Brian Westbrook was that would only do so if we continue to win in the short term and it starts to look like we might be able to win the division with a little more firepower on offense. That would have to be coupled with a continued lack of playing time and building dissatisfaction on the part of those two players, maybe helped along by a little complaining in the Press by them. Then, we might be able to get one or both of them by trading marginal players or future low round draft picks. Who knows, they might even get released if they aggravate their teams' management enough. Geez, that idea is starting to sound far-fetched. Maybe this scenario is a bit more realistic: a tornado will pick them up and deposit them at Redskins Park (Oz) where they'll be welcomed by the munchkins (Dan Snyder and Brandon Banks) and play happily ever after. |
