Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
I agree. I really think they could have played this a little differently. I think the price was too high but the reality of the situation is that we are desperate. We have started 21QBs since our last Super Bowl. If we end up with another trophy then it was worth it.

I see less question marks with RG3, than I did with Cam Newton.. What I'm worried about are the inevitable ACL tears.

I dont see any desperation in this at all.
This is how it works in the NFL today. If you want to win, this is what you do. This really isnt that much different than the Jay Cutler trade.

Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
I slightly say yes, but man it's close. Really allot to give up, but this franchise is in such dire need of a franchise QB, that I feel like we had to do it. There is a significant drop off between Luck/RGIII and everyone else... while it sounds great on paper to draft a guy in the second and have him learn for a year or two, how often does that really work out? Not saying guys never bust, but everything you see from RGIII has been gold. Not saying I'm happy about the 2 first rounders and second rounder just to move up four slots...but given way the organization has built itself the past few years, I think we're finally in a position to make this type of a deal.
We NEED to get a bigtime WR. I dont want to go nuts in free agency, except for that. Thats a must, we need a bigtime guy to come in, let Hank continue to develop and hopefully be a solid #2 who could develop into a #2 and then Moss to the slot. I think once we get a legit WR threat, we'll be so much more competitive.

Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
So you're saying we couldn't get a good QB at #6? Or the 2nd round??? And keep the picks? Cincy got their QB in the 2nd round last year and made the playoffs. Also everyone just thinks that RG3 is going to be an automatic success. I hope like hell he is or this could REALLY set us back. It worked out for NY but they had more pieces in place than we do.

I went to bed last night and woke up this morning, and immediately turned on sportscenter to make sure this wasn't a dream. I truly think we made this move now, because of Free Agency approaching. We don't/didn't have an appealing QB for other guys to come here and play with. We'll find out if Vincent Jackson likes us more now (or less cause of a rookie QB) to come here. I've been hyping up Marques Colston, but I didn't know that he's mad two major knee surgeries the past couple of years according to Peter King. All in all, when we look at this trade, ON PAPER we got our franchise QB. But this and what we gave up doesn't mean anything until we see this guy play in some games. Will he be Cam Newton? Mike Vick? Akili Smith? Andre Ware? We'll see skin fans.

Boy was he wrong! And, for the record, so was I. I said it wouldn't happen so quickly and I got the trade parameters wrong. So let me first take the anti-CultBrennan59 approach and just apologize for getting that wrong. In my opinion, I'm still not totally convinced the gap between Griffin and Tannehill is huge. That said, it's only my opinion and we absolutely had to get a QB (or two) this offseason. Giving up a 2014 1st is pretty irrelevant to me at this point. I mean we're all operating under the assumption (I should say all of us who are down on the trade) it seems that that pick will also be a top #10 pick. Let's hope it's not. I don't like giving up this year's 2nd. They could done a lot with that. Use it and our 3rd to move up some, use it to move down, or just use it. It can be said now that Orakpo was part of a possible three-team scenario that would have landed the Rams picks and a current WR, the Redskins the #2 pick and possibly a later pick, and the third team as a pass rusher. The rumor was San Diego and Vincent Jackson, though to be fair I never understood or got clarity on how that would work.

Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
The year after the Eli trade, the Chargers went 12-4, Giants went 6-10. SD had the Giants 12th overall pick. What made it worse at the time was the Giants could have not done a trade and still had Rivers (or Roethlisberger). I am not going to argue Eli vs Rivers vs Big Ben, but the Giants and Steelers have 2 Super Bowls since and the Chargers have a few division titles. Not as if the Skins can stay at 6 and still get one of the stud QBs.

Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
Having a young top caliber prospect at Qb in Washington has been a LONG time coming.
Luck and RGIII are special. Time will only tell if this trade has been worth it. The chance of the Redskins having the #1 or #2 pick in an upcoming draft is unlikely. We are a rebuilding team, but the days of having a Colt-like one or two win season are way behind us. This reason alone make this risk/trade slightly more palatable. Even if we did not do this trade and kept all of our picks, the chances of us being in position to draft an RGIII/Luck type Qb in the 2013 and 2014 draft is extremely unlikely. We payed a high price to get our guy. I am starting to be ok with it. FA and the draft picks we have left are critical. OL, CB, WR and developing quality depth are critical. If we fail to get quality at Cb, OL and to a smaller extent WR, we will be a .500 or less team again next year. We showed early last season that when healthy this core group is pretty good. We were devastated with injury last year. That won't happen every year. HTTR! Last edited by Defensewins; 03-10-2012 at 12:09 PM. |

Re: Redskins agree to trade for No.2 overall pick in 2012 Draft
“This is the best throwing athlete I’ve seen come out in a while,” said former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick, who now works for the NFL Network. “Far better than [Philadelphia Eagles quarterback] Michael Vick, in my opinion. Far better than [Carolina Panthers quarterback] Cam Newton.”
This is Brian Billicks take on RG3. Boy do I hope he is right! Not better, FAR BETTER. I think as time passes by, we will look back and be very satisfied with the trade. |
