Lovie Smith runs a one gap defense, which means the D-Lineman are only responsible for one gap on the o line (ie: the gap b/n the Guard and the center) for a DT. Usually big fat DT are suited for 2 gap run stopping duties b/c they hold their position as the play develops and plan the attack as the runner goes one way or another while quicker players are better suited for aq 1 gap setup where they go upfield through there assigned gap and attempt to blow up anyone in their way.
