Would that not make you think there is a crack on the sea floor and the water is pouring in much like a draining tub acts or maybe the currents are just so messed up right now it is causing that.
Thats a dead spot protected from the rushing water which causes the whirlpool action. You see them all the time in strong currents but on a much much smaller scale.
