Looking at the pictures of the debris looks like someone took a giant pushbroom across the landscape of Japan

So terribly sad and tragic. Death toll will likely be much higher than current estimates. May Kannon be there to help them.

There is a nuclear power plant right now in Tokyo that is on fire due to the fact that the generators to cool the reactor failed in the fallout from the quake.

This is very scary due to the fact that it shares a similar situation with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It was actually a fire in the reactor due to a similar cooling problem that blew the dome off the building, and spewed radiation and poison across the landscape, leading to the city of pripyat being permanently abandoned.

I dont know what steps they are taking to try and stop the fire, and they have not commented yet on if there is any radiation leaking inside or around the building...very scary

BreakingNews Breaking News
USGS has measured 67 aftershocks with a 5.0 magnitude or above in Japan since the quake Latest Earthquakes in the World - Past 7 days

SolidSnake - Japanese government reports that no radiation is leaking. Also, I trust Japanese technical experts and nuclear facilities far more than 1970's era Soviet designs. No offense, just don't think the Chernobyl comparison is very relevant.

Here's a good article on the nuclear plant:
Nuclear plant, oil refineries on fire; Japan declares atomic alert | Deccan Chronicle | 2011-03-11

Quote:
Prime Minister Naoto Kan declared the emergency to enable authorities to implement emergency measures. Residents living near plants were not required to take special action, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference.

"We have declared a nuclear emergency state to take every possible precaution," Edano said. "Let me repeat that there is no radiation leak, nor will there be a leak."

"We ask residents in the areas near power plants to act calmly."

A fire broke out in the turbine building of Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture, but operator Tohoku Electric Power said there were no indications of a radioactive leak, Kyodo News reported.

Re: Massive quake hits Japan; Tsunami in Pacific, nations on alert

Atomic Energy is so much more powerful now than it was in the 1980's...Plants put out way more energy than they did back then.

I imagine an plant explosion today would sadly make the Chernobyl disaster look small. Hard to imagine, but I imagine the people in Japan are already fearing the same kind of situation.

I know that Japan reps have said there is no leak, etc, blah blah blah.

But remember, it was not until almost 48 hours after Chernobyl exploded that people were evacuated, and even then they were told that they would only be gone from the city for about a week.

The government did not admit to the scale of the disaster/problem until 2 days later when nuclear plants in DIFFERENT COUNTRIES began to detect the spreading plume of radition. Only at that point did they fully admit to the disaster. God be with the people in Japan right now....The world cannot take another "Chernobyl"
