Re: The Defense Only Thread
I definitely think it's a DL solution. Golston was always the goalline monster and he's out. Without him, you saw how Alfred Morris and Crowell both just absolutely waltzed into the end zone on those goalline plays.
They still like Everett, he makes for the fourth safety. I think they've discovered that Ionnidis is not ready, and they know that Ziggy Hood would be much better as a DE. Reading the tea leaves I'm pretty sure this means Knighton is coming.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
Tackling was a lot worse against Cleveland than it was in the first two games; someone pointed out that Cleveland has the top running game in the NFL. That will always make a defense look bad at tackling; a lot of the "missed" tackles are guys desperately throwing their arms out because they're late to the spot and not in position to make the tackle.
I'm not as worried about the tackling as I am about this team's inability to stop third and long. We're making enough tackles on first and second downs to force third and longs, and then we're surrendering 10, 15 yard completions. |

Re: The Defense Only Thread
Whitner is a good tackler, so I understand if McCloughan goes in that direction.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
Witner may be able to tackle, he will at least hit someone. In the end this is just another band aid. Signing guys off the street mid season isn't going to solve our issues on defense.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
I think replacing Bruton with Witner would certainly bring a positive change to the starting defense. But this certainly isn't a long term fix..

Re: The Defense Only Thread
I wonder whether they bring in Whitner and Pot Roast, cut Iannodis and resign him to the practice squad.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
To the extent you buy into Pro Football Focus, Whitner graded out well last year in Cleveland and very well the year before that in San Fran. Still an effective player it seems.
But yes, not a long term solution. But if he shores up some tackling and brings some big hits that keep the defense from getting discouraged, it helps keep everyone engaged this season, which still makes a positive impact. The thing that gets lost is there's a potential negative effect on the current roster if we just sit idle. Players like to know their front office sees what they're seeing and tries as hard as they do to get Ws in the here and now. It helps build the culture you want. McC will have to balance that against our long term ability to build a roster.
