Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
The bottom line is that the run and pass go hand in hand. You can have a team that is more pass-oriented or vice versa, but if a team can force the opposition to do one or the other, as EVERY team has forced the Skins to do thus far, both run and pass games will suffer. As for Portis, we can't really ask more from him. The guy is a complete warrior on the field. We just have to start trusting in our players to win the game not just managing it to not lose the game.
We have to throw the ball vertically. Once they have to respect the pass and get safties out of the box, C.P. wil be able to do his thing Miami style, but not before |

Until we have any semblance of a passing game that threatens the fiedl beyond 10 yards we won't run the ball effectively no matter what. Even if we magically find one I am dubious that the play of o-line right now will produce any great efforts without a Hurculean effort from CP each and every play. |

Everything!!! Brennan looked good in the pre-season, Brennan also was playing against 3rd & 4th stringer defenses too. Hell Dennis Dixon looked good in the preseason that doesn't mean anything. Do you seriously think Colt could handle 1st string offenses?

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
15 more games genius.. He's nowhere close to being ready to even be a #2.
I know it's going to sound CRAZY to the proponents of 'Redskins Football' meaning 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but do you want to get CP going? Start the game-and drives-by THROWING THE FOOTBALL. The NFL today is a vertical league.. You've got to use the pass to set up the run.. Especially with our history, teams are expecting us to run, run, pass and they sit on that.. What happens when we play into that trend? 3 and out. Teams that come off the bus throwing (Philly, Dallas, NE, SD, Indy, even Pittsburgh!) are able to loosen up the defense, opening running lanes for their backs. One of the biggest things missing from the offense the past 5 years is the deep attempt, notice I didn't say completion. Percentages are against completing many deep balls, but 3 positive things can happen from a deep attempt. 1-A completion, 2-An interference call, 3-defensive coordinators and guys in the secondary know you aren't afraid to challenge deep. The only real negative is an interception, but that's a risk with any throw. Either way, if defensive coaches and players KNOW you're not throwing beyond 15 yards they will creep and crowd the line making running the ball nearly impossible. Portis is not Riggins-lite, as he was miscast to be the past 4 years, he's a back that operates best in space. He likes running inside, but not when there is a linebacker and safety clogging every gap it's going to make it impossible to get 4.5 YPC which he needs to regain his near elite status.

portis is a beast..a solid 1000 yard rusher every season hes healthier, with the conservative and predictable play calling you cant ask for much more from the guy

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
You want to see CP of old? How about supplying him with Alex Gibbs and the Oline he had while in Denver? It's amazing how much easier it is for a back to find space when every defensive lineman is watching out for their knees... Don't misunderstand me, I would NEVER want alex gibbs to coach anyone on this team, the dude CREATES cheap shot artists.

If we can throw the ball consistently, you will.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
Call me crazy but I think the best shot CP has early in the season to break longer runs is w/ misdirection starting in the backfield, which starts w/ Betts and CP in the game together and Zorn actually giving the ball to Betts a handful of times. Our air attack is not going to scare anyone for a while and Betts is a legitimate threat out of the backfield both as a runner and a receiver, so defenses cannot key in on CP alone which is exactly what we saw against NY. Some of those plays were even ridiculous - 8 or 9 defenders all keying on Portis before the snap even.

I guess the point I'm making is that CP alone in the backfield means the defense, literally the whole f'n defense, is keying on him. Of course this is because the pass does not look like a serious threat at this point. So... put another legit threat in the backfield. Mix it up even. Swap Betts and Sellers part of the time. But the important thing is to give some reps to the other guy. If we just use Betts/Sellers as a decoy for CP (as it seemed Gibbs did a time or two) then the double threat is lost. CP as a decoy for the other will open some lanes initially and start to give the defense different looks. Personally, I like CP on a dive and Sellers on a sweep - nobody would expect it and I want to see Mike hurdle again

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
They were on the field at the same time a few plays on Thursday.
All I's sayin' is that we don't need to elaborately use up plays by sending Betts on a misdirection with one fewer blocker just to set up a long Portis run when we could just run misdirection with Portis. I would like to see more of Betts + Portis, but mostly with Betts as a slot receiver. Gibbs was creative enough to put Betts in the slot, Saunders was not, and that minimized his playing time.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
I will admit he can block very well (Just ask Mathias " I am going to accuse Samuels for a dirty play because I got jacked up by Portis" Kiwanuka) and is an outstanding ball carrier top 6-8 in the league.... but I think he should be right at 4.5. A blind man with half a right foot can crank out 5.5+ in Denver.
