I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here but I want to see the Clinton Portis of old. This isn't a knock on CP himself, b/c I think he's still the pretty much the same guy. CP has also had some great years here in DC but it's not the same since he's been here. I almost feel like we're wasting his years here. He could be so much more. How many times do we see him just rush into the line w/ no openings for a 3-4 yard gain. Let's see how this year goes, but how about some different run schemes? How about a little innovation? I'm not really sold on JG's run game, after all what did it produce? 4 yards a carry and beat up RB's.

He's as talented a guy as there is in the league, imo. He can run, catch, and pass block like no other.

2002 & 2003 Denver 5.5 yards per carry

2004 to date Was No higher than 4.3 (2005)

We can get into personel, blocking schemes, the passing game and whatever else effects the run game. These are all major factors.

It's the Head Coach's and the FO's job to utilize a players correctly. I think we may have missed a major opportunity w/ CP though. He's not done by any means but he's done a lot of work in the last 5 years.

I want to see the CP of old. The one that rips 50 yard TD's like nothing. That's what I want to see. Am I asking too much?

CP would have had 100+ easy against the Giants if we had any sort of a passing game to extend drives and take pressure off him.

CP is the least of my concerns right now.

CP is not the problem. He is the lone bright spot in our offense. JESUS! HELLO!

You hit the nail on the head. When teams know the skins cant pass all the focus goes to CP. If JC can figure out how to get the ball out faster CP will be ok.

Oddly enough I'm with you redsk1 and you too Matty and mredskins. CP is not the problem, however I want to see him being a gamebreaker. I don't think redsk1 is saying CP is the problem, but how we're using him is.

I'm encouraged by what I've seen. The first play of last game, Campbell did get sacked after locking on to the right side. But in the highlight, you can see Portis swinging out to the left all alone. That type of thing, getting Portis out in space, and sustaining drives like matty said, will result in seeing the Portis of old.

15 more pedestrian games like last week and he will get 1360 yeards for the season.

Almost looking like he will hit 1500 again. Not too shabby at all.

if i cant have the home run hitting portis i'll gladly take the "hop on my shoulders cuz im carrying this team to the playoffs" portis we were given 2 out of the last 3 years. Add his first year here when he set the skins single season rushing record and im pretty damn happy.

go skins!

I feel like he always quietly gets his yards. When the team plays like balls, its hard to focus on him. He had like 84 yds last week which isnt bad.

CP and Cooley are the two guys I'm least concerned about on this team. If given a decent chance to perform they'll come through.

Thank You. That's exactly what i was saying. I'm complementing CP in this thread. We've got to utilize him more...and maybe differently.

Yes, 1500 yards is more than "not to shabby," but I'd rather him not acheive it by getting 4 yards a pop. I'd rather him hit 4.5-5 yards a pop a carry less.

But, yes, this is a PRO CP thread.

Well said, but I get what the poster is saying. Portis had numerous runs over 30 yards with Denver, and has had perhaps 3-4 runs of that length in 4 seasons here. I believe that the Denver Zone Blocking scheme allows the runner more freedom to choose the lane to turn the ball upfield, and produces frequent cutback opportunities that play to Portis's strengths. I agree that he's our rock on offense, but he is not the regular home run threat in this running scheme as he was in Denver.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old

The bottom line is that the run and pass go hand in hand. You can have a team that is more pass-oriented or vice versa, but if a team can force the opposition to do one or the other, as EVERY team has forced the Skins to do thus far, both run and pass games will suffer. As for Portis, we can't really ask more from him. The guy is a complete warrior on the field. We just have to start trusting in our players to win the game not just managing it to not lose the game.
We have to throw the ball vertically. Once they have to respect the pass and get safties out of the box, C.P. wil be able to do his thing Miami style, but not before
