The honorable thing to do in Portis' part is to ask Ohalete if he can have his jersey. So long as Ohalete is on the team the jersey is his to give away not the Redskins!

Portis says Ohalete won't even discuss the issue, like he's taking a hard line. To me that sounds pretty ridiculous, unless he's angling for a financial incentive. Or maybe there are a bunch of little kids and family members somewhere wearing "Ohalete #26" jerseys and he doesn't want to disappoint them. When Iffy first came aboard, announcers and other people would mispronounce his name and I remember hearing that it was pissing off the Ohalete clan. I think respect is a big thing with Iffy and his family ... maybe that's a factor in this.

You know what?
Trade him. Ohalete is a very good safety, but we appear to be willing to draft Taylor. I don't think Portis deserves the number more than Iffy, or that either player is bigger than the team, but his unwillingness to discuss the issue is childish and divisive. He's an undrafted free agent who could likely garner us a fourth round draft pick.

None of us know what is exactly going on. Personally, I think Iffy has a valid reasons for not wanting to give that number up whatever those reasons might be.
Let say you have a nice PC in your office and some new guy with super skills comes in and he wants your nice PC. He doesn't ask you but instead goes to the System Admin and says i want that PC. The system admin comes back to you and says the new guy wants your PC. What would be your reaction? Plus, there might be other value attached to your PC other than the fact that it is nice. I mean all your files might be very important to you and you can't be bothered to move over to a new machine. |

Well, I wouldnt go that far, bleedburgandy. I could understand the fact that Portis would like #26, but I dont see him making all that big of a deal out of it.

Drafting Sean Taylor would make Iffy expendable, but Taylor wears #26 as well. CP would take the number before Taylor had a shot at it but either way they both deserve the number more than Iffy.
In his defense I know I can be a stubborn person and I wouldnt want to give up my number. But for a cut of a 50 million dollar contract I might change my mind.

I don't see a big deal about the number anyways! I might if Portis has been around for years and has already proven himself as a hall of famer, but didn't Montana change his number when he went to K.C.? I could be wrong on that, but I thought he had changed his number to #17 or something like that.
#26 to me just seems like a weird number for a RB anyways. What about the numbers for Brunell and Hasselbeck? If TH stays with the team, we know who's gonna wind up with #8!

Hasselbeck switched to #4. And I think you're right Joe Montana switched to #19 in KC

I might be wrong, but #16 for Kansas City is a retired number. I believe Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner Len Dawson used #16. The only SuperBowl KC has ever won. So to say Montana is a better person than Portis is wrong. I seem to recall a discussion between Montana and Dawson about the KC number 16. Montana never used it so Dawson must have told Montana to go........ A little different than this situation. |

Another reason Portis has going for him is the fact that the Redskins wanted him and traded a lot to get him. He wasnt a free agent pick up, he was part of a blockbuster trade and if they are going to go through all that effort to get him they might as well throw in the number.

Was Portis in camp? What number did he wear?
Coles wore number 87 with the Jets but swapped without fuss to number 80 on his arrival here as Rod already had 87.... ooopppsss, sorry, I keep forgetting, Coles has CLASS.

I agree that Coles has class, but its a little early to be suggesting that Portis doesn't and will make a big deal of this. lets let it play out before passing judgement |

You said that this is probably Iffy's last stand and that this will be the last memorable thing he does as a Redskin. I have no quarrel with that. However, I do need your help here. What were some of the memorable things he did in the past as a Redskin? If they were memorable, I must have been on some other planet when they happened, because ... I can't remember them!

Portis was wearing #3 all weekend, but that will obviously have to change.
