Re: hooked on sushi
The best sushi I've ever had is two blocks from my place... you can only get omakase (chef's choice) on weekends and you'll spend over a bill per person. The owner is the sole chef- his assistants help plate and garnish. He uses pretty unique flavors that complement the fish, like jalapeno, ponzu and wasabe (there's none provided on the side for a reason). The place gets fish flown in from Japan every day- including butterfish, skipjack and the best toro this side of the globe. My favorite is the blue crab handroll.
The place is sushi nazi too- 1) you can't use your cell phone while eating. 2) Eat each piece fish side down (contrary to the popular rice side down). 3) Clear each piece within 30 seconds of it being served. 4) Don't ask for anything during omakase (especially Americanized stuff like California rolls, etc). 5) Most importantly, only dip the piece in the shoyu if it's preceded by permission (most of his fish don't need it). I've seen people kicked out of this place because they don't follow the rules... Chef Keizo takes his art super seriously. Sushi Zo on Yelp * If you guys don't already use it, Yelp is the best (free) resource for finding restaurants on the web- no zagat payola... real reviews, real people. You can also find the most honest mechanics, reputable dry cleaners, whatever business you need here. That's my shameless plug for the week hehehe. Last edited by itvnetop; 07-29-2008 at 11:59 PM. |

Re: hooked on sushi
Dude, don't get me started. I love sushi but i am too poor for it. Also the murcury levels can be high if you eat it too often. I probably already am going to get murcury poisioning because i am trying to go high protein right now and am eating 3-5 canned tunas a day. So i might as well go the whole way. I love sea food. delicious and not bad for you.

Re: hooked on sushi
I am pretty sure it is the same everywhere, but the good grocery stores here all produce a variety of Sushi daily that is available for purchase for a 5 or 6 bucks for 8-ish pieces. It is not excellent, but not bad and will do if you need a lunch fix

Re: hooked on sushi
Giant Eagle has a sushi counter with a sushi chef making it right in front of you. I've never ordered from it but other that have said it's pretty good.

Re: hooked on sushi
I can eat sushi, just not a big fan. Don't see the draw. Personally rather put some shrimp, scallops, tuna, salmon, or soft crab on the grill.
Would like to know if there is anything I'm missing or doing wrong? I do know that not crazy about raw fish. |

I guess sushi lovers have a palette that has taken to the uniqueness of raw fish... taste and texture are completely different than cooked. As much as the quality of fish, your sushi eating experience depends just as much as the chef's skill level... he/she makes all the difference in the world. Honestly, I really wasn't into sushi until I got into college and was introduced properly... until that point, I'd been thinking sushi was all spicy tuna and california rolls (didn't really see what all the fuss was about). Then my fanatical sushi friends took me to my first nigiri spot. Then it was all over. |

You should see me arguing with Japanese people about how delicious deer meet is. They are like GROSS, I would never eat Bambi. Meanwhile they will order raw pickled jellyfish with beer the way we order Buffalo wings (it's delicious btw). |

Re: hooked on sushi
I was raised eating seafood and several family members were watermen. Years ago as a kid ate a lot raw oysters and clams. Now with all the polution eating raw seafood worries me.
My concern is how to truely tell difference is sushi or sashimi grade tuna, salmon, etc. |

Re: hooked on sushi
The majority of Sushi that Americans is cooked, just so you know. I'm not trying to sway you, I just don't think that most people who judge Sushi before trying it understand that most of what they would eat isn't raw.

Re: hooked on sushi
Ok I figured out why Supermarket sushi sucks so bad. It is because you always get it so cold. I had leftovers (very rare) from my favorite sushi place the other day. When I took the leftovers out the next day and ate them straight from the fridge it tasted horrible. The cold totally ruins the texture of the rice.
Supermarkets have to keep it cold since it is not made to order. |
