Portis should not made an issue of the whole thing. He should of just asked him and if he said no get another number. There are other good numbers to wear that good RBs have worn.

Iffy has gained a bunch of respect last year when he didnt want to give it to Morton, but even more so now that he won't back down to Portis.......Its Iffy's #, why should he, Portis got the money, so unless some of the green is changing hands, Iffey should keep it

Just wanted to point out one quick thing...
Ifeanyi Ohelete had 103 tackles last year (2nd on the team) and 3 INT's (also 2nd on the team, one behind Smoot's 4). He recorded these totals in 15 games. Someone please show me a more statistically PRODUCTIVE safety last year please? Well, I'll help you... When you go to this page Defensive Back Rankings , you will see Defensive Backs across the NFL ranked according to their production (tackles, INTs, forced fumbles, pass deflections, etc.) You wil be suprised to see that there are NO, I repeat NO NFC defensive backs ranked higher... I know I was suprised. I mean, I knew he had 100 tackles and 3 INTs, which I thought was respectable, but numbers don't lie... he IS a productive safety. I think because he is not a "big hitter" like Roy Williams is supposed to be, or not as well-known as a Mike Minter, he is severely underrated, and sadly, most underrated by us... Redskin fans. Look, I am not the President of the Iffy club... but I think we could be doing much worse at the position and Ohelete is still only 25. He SHOULD improve. He has EARNED the WASHINGTON REDSKINS #26 and it is his to give up or keep. For someone to assume he should give it up is kind of disrespectful. If he were to have been traded to the Broncos and asked for the number off Portis' back, how hard do you think Clinton would have laughed in his face?? I'm not bashing Portis at all... but come on... it's well documented that the guy is at least SOMEWHAT similar to "Leon" from the Bud commercials. I just think that Portis should take #36 (or did Timmy Smith retire that one? hahaha) or #25 and be done with it... but mostly I wanted to point out that Ohelete isn't quite the sloutch or chump some of you guys make him sound like....

Well Portis won't get 24, that's Springs' number now. I wonder if Walt Harris is making the same claims for his old #21

OK, 3 things...
1) Portis is only wore #3 for the mini-camp... NFL rules state that RB's can't have single digit numbers. Running Backs numbers have to be between #20-#49. 2) Like I said in my post... no, I don't think Ohelete is the best safety ever, BUT he is only 25 and can and will improve. Someone can lecture me all day on how our D-Line and LB's played so badly that our safeties got too many tackles, which is OK. BUT 103 tackles is not a bad season I don't care WHO you are... anyone who thinks so needs to put their sorry judgemental behind in a uniform and play the position. Also... 3 INT's for a saftey is not bad at all either. Roy Williams, "the best safety since Ronnie Lott" had only 2 INT's. Now you can't blame that on a bad D-Line can you? and 3) It shows something about a person's value system when he, the fan, is upset with a guy who has 3 YEARS of tenure with this team because he won't give up HIS, I repeat, HIS number to the new "superstar" who hasn't earned a penny of his fat paycheck with this franchise yet. So much for loyalty and treating everyone on a team as equals... BUT I guess it makes sense... players today have lost most of their honor, why not the fans too. There have been a few other expamples of my point before in this thread, but... I guarantee if you had a great parking spot close to your building at work, and some new guy came in and wanted YOUR space... you would laugh in his face. But when people you thought were your friends are now sucking up to the new guy because his in good with their boss and are pissed of at you because you won't give it to him... you'd be pretty pissed yourself.

I get the impression it isn't an issue. Apparently Portis suggested they box for it - yeah that's really going to happen, I can't imagine ANY coach letting his players beat the crap out of each other for a #!

From what I've read and heard Portis hasn't made a big deal out of it, he's always referred to it in a joking manner, it's not like he's ticked off and pouting about it.
If I was him I'd take another # and move on. He's already offered Iffy an undisclosed amount of money, if he doesn't take it there's not much else you can do. |

Portis said something along the lines of "Tell him Portis dont look good in no number 3" or somethign like that. We'll see what happens I guess.

Iffy has had #26 for 3 years...it's his to do with as he pleases. Portis wants #26, but picked #3 for camp.....just take #36 and be done with it.....

His INT return for a TD against the Saints in '02 was a nice play, but that's all that sticks out to me right now.

Hey Matty, can you tell me how the status things work. Smootsmack told me you would explain them to me in another forum. The practice squad, rookie, etc. Thanks

Iffy put up a lot of numbers, which is great for him, but bad for the Redskins. You dont want your safety to lead yoru team in tackles. Thats why they are called safetys. The fact he had so many tackles shows how bad our front 7 did last year. I hope he does continue to improve but I hope he doesnt have to make as many tackles. Roy Williams is known as being a hard hitter because he is in on plays that the front seven is making. The three picks of course were a great stat for him.
