I still think that maybe the plan is to see the zone blocking scheme work with bigger lineman. Of course trading for Gaither and giving him a new contract would be the huge step towards committing to that philosophy. Still even though he's not the best zone blocker he's still a punishing run blocker that's more then capable of protecting a QB's blind side.

Also for what it's worth Shanahan does seem to be trying to correct a few of the things that hurt him when he was in Denver. One of those things was the difficulty his lines faced blocking the bigger D-Lines around the league so now he might be thinking that getting bigger O-Lineman could neutralize the effect. Think about it, right now we're looking at a line that with our current roster could feature Dockery (LG), BMW (RG), and Artis Hicks (RT). If Gaither was acquired that would be 4 "power" types. Rinehart is also a traditional power type.

I don't know if it is him trying to correct the problems that he had in Denver or if it is more him just tailoring the scheme to the players that are here. I do agree with you that he realizes what division he is in and probably needs a bigger line than he typically had in Denver.

One thing that I am happy about is that he didn't bring in 2 pro-bowl runningbacks to primarily "pitch and catch" it. We are going to be a run first team and we finally have a coach who understands that the system's success is based on his players not that players will be successful based on the system.

damn that run around 1:15 vs Steelers was sick.. same for the next one vs Bengals

would've liked to have seen some 2nd level blocking examples but I know that's not really the Ravens' style

I think I'd rather have one year of JC than a 3rd round pick in this draft. It's close though. I like holding the option of offering him an extension if he exceeds all of our expectations, but I think I'd be willing to pull the trigger if someone offered a second rounder for Campbell, and just go with Colt McCoy as a rookie at QB.

Yeah.. that 3rd could give us a good interior lineman, LB, or something.. then McCoy vs Grossman to start in camp, I guess giving Brennan or whoever else is here their due diligence as well

I guess that you do have the chance that we extend Campbell, but how long will it take for Shanahan to find himself a new young QB? If we get a QB in the first couple of rounds and another team doesn't get who they wanted then maybe we can pull a 3rd.

As I think has already been mentioned above, I think that an early 3rd rounder could give us a starting guard in this draft. If nothing else, we might be able to reach out and grab Best or matthews, whoever drops farther. Not a bad prospect IMHO, especially with the way Colt looked at his pro day.

Who knows what this FO will do. Alot of the moves thus far have been so completely out of right field, I wouldnt be surprised if we get TO and he tries to get Terry Bradshaw to be our backup QB or sumthin. Totally unexpected and close to the chest.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?

I would definately take a 3rd rd pick for Campbell. It seems obvious to me that he is not in their long-term plans, and that 3rd rd selection should net us a quality starter. Players like Ben Tate-Hardesty at RB, Misi-Butler for LB, Ducasse-Asamoah-Jerry for OL, Thomas-Troup for NT. Definately should get a key starter to plug a hole.
It is very difficult to read this new regime, they are making quite a few head-scratching moves, and so who knows what to expect come draft day. I feel that we can expect at least 1 trade, and probably 2 or 3.

I probably co-sign that trade. but it would have to be done on draft day, because we might be able to squeeze more out of them.

Baltimore probably doesn't want that contract.

It's ridiculous. Baltimore earliest draft pick on their roster is 10th overall from 7 years ago. The fact that they continually compete is amazing. However looking back I don't know why they took Boller in the first round. The guy had something like a career 50% completion percentage while playing for Tedford. Other then that though Baltimore is pretty much "money" when it comes to making picks. A bunch of their picks in redrafts would easily be top 10, even top 5 picks (Reed, Lewis, Ngota, Suggs, Oher, Flacco, Grubbs)

I personally think Newsome and company are far and away the best front office in the game. Most front offices that are considered elite do well on a QB and ride that wave of success, while the Ravens have done what they have been doing for years without a franchise QB. Now that they have Flacco the skies the limit.

Baltimore is one of the gold standards when it comes to building teams through the draft. Ozzie Newsome was a Hall of Fame player but his playing career is nothing compared to his proficiency in the draft.
