My only concern is the ability to extend Kerrigan/Orakpo/Morris/Williams if we sign him. I really dislike him, but not to the point I disliked Deion when we got him.

That would be a ton of money locked up, but loving that he takes care of two holes in one signing.

I don't think it would stop us from extending any of those guys, and the fact like you said means it closes up two holes is just brilliant.

Shameless self-promotion. It is what it is.

Exactly. The good news is the cap is going up dramatically in the near future, so backloaded deals are possible. But we also may need a large contract for RG3 by ?2016-2017. By that time, as you said -- we'd have a very large portion of our cap tied up by a few players RG3, Orakpo, Twilliams, ?Garcon, ?DJax, ?Morris..

I can understand the concern but I can also dispel the notion that Desean will prevent us from resigning our big guns with a little cap analysis.

Let's look at 2015 where we currently have $107M committed to 42 players. The cap is estimated to come in around $140M, so there's currently $33M in space there.

So starting with $33M in space:

- figure on $10M in space for 8 more players, taking you up to 50
- figure on $7M in space for Desean, taking you to 51

Let's stop there. That leaves you $16M in space, with Desean, and with a full roster. So now think of the typical offseason moves they'll face next year before you begin making moves:

- Stephen Bowen has a cap hit of $8.0M. You could save $5.5M by releasing him. Um, bye.

- Chris Chester has a cap hit of $4.8M. You could save $4.0M by releasing him. Um, later bro.

- Logan Paulsen has a cap hit of $2.1M. Nice enough player, but cutting him saves you $1.7M. You could, at minimum, get him to easily drop that salary and bring him back.

Let's stop there. You just added $10M in space with those cuts. So we're back to $26M. Now what:

- Let's say we give Griffin the big extension and he eats $15M in space instead of his $6.7M he's scheduled to. So $8.3M additional space gone.

- Let's say we extend Trent for life. His cap number would actually come down from $13.7M to like $10M. So believe it or not that creates space in 2015.

- We lock up AlMo because he's a beast. $5M cap hit.

- We lock up Orakpo. $8M cap hit.

- We lock up Kerrigan. $6M cap hit.

Stop there. Those moves ate $23M in space. You now have $3M in space left.

So yes, you can keep everyone with Desean just fine. And I'm probably being very liberal with the cap hits on Almo, Orakpo, and Kerrigan. There are other moves that could be made in there as well to save cap space.

It's not a problem, Desean fits fine if we want him.

Thanks for laying that out. It just seems shocking we could fit all that in.

And to your point of not having to take a WR at #2, I REALLY would prefer that. That's about the most risky of all positions, and the last thing I want to do is something like that diminishes our chances of improving even if it's not a sexy pick like WR.
