But there are a lot of playoff scenarios situations in all sports, where a team may still make the playoffs, even if they lose their last game.

A lot of teams bench their starters the last two or three games of the season depending on their positions. Colts used to do that all the time with Manning. I think any reason people hate soccer can be applicable to any other sport.
