When do 30+ year olds that haven't played well in two years get their form back? Basically he made no plays in TB. Just not a fan of it. I'd rather try and develop a younger guy there who will be around a while, instead of a one year rental that will probably be gone after next year, a la Ryan Clark.

I do like the other moves SM has made, just not this one.

The problem is you are taking Cerrato moves and equating that to the player. Tampa Bay went full Vinny in FA. Just signing the big name regardless of whether they fit the system. When your system turns Revis into an average CB, Im ok with questioning the system.

The cost of switching a 6th for a 7th a year down the road is next to nothing. No guaranteed money means we can walk away from the contract real easy. Lets say Goldson is flat out terrible, how is that any different than the last few years out of the secondary? It also allows us to do something that you are calling for. For us to develop a younger player. The finishing to developing a player requires him to play, but that doesnt mean that the development cant start with him on the bench. I would even go so far as to say that a lot of players never develop when they are thrown into the fire and fail early on in their career. Some can come back from that, a lot cant. IMO, failure as a rookie can derail some players development.

The safety spots have clearly been upgraded IMO. Getting a potential solid starter in Goldson for a swap of late round picks is a no brainer. McCloughan knows him well, that's all I need to know.

Thank you.

My question for everyone complaining that "he's too old" or "He's a 2-win cast off" is, what other option did we have?

With this move we keep our CB's where their at and have a safety who knows the GM and corner he'll be playing with. Sounds like a good move to me.

I know we're looking to get younger but a lot of us (including myself at times) are forgetting this is not a 1 year rebuild. I have no issues letting Goldson play safety over anybody else we would have had back there and who knows, maybe someone in camp will surprise and push him for the starting role.

It's always good to have more bodies in camp for competition, if nothing else.

This is a process people...Rome will not be rebuilt in one off-season. Making solid low risk stop gap moves is sound.

He was definitely not great in Tampa, but keep in mind the scheme fit has a lot to do with that. I think given the teeny tiny price we're paying in both draft picks and guaranteed money, I think folks need to be reminded of the upside that comes from a guy getting out of a scheme that didn't fit him.

Will our scheme resemble San Fran's? Well it's one-gap, press corner, and aggressive. It's not too far off. So keep in mind what you could be getting:

Re: Redskins trade for Free Safety Dashon Goldson

If you think about what Goldson's good at, it's reading and reacting to plays in front of him, and laying dudes out with snot-bubbler hits. He's not a center-field angel like we had with Sean Taylor (who was simultaneously the best hitter we've ever had).

So Goldson's success with us will come down to our pass rush. If the QB has time and he's asked to cover deep then we'll get gashed some. But if we're in the QB's face with pressure (like we could be with Kerrigan + Fowler), then Goldson will be there to lay out punishing hits and force fumbles.

Coverage skills not so much, but tackling? Massive upgrade.

Poor tackling by the defensive backfield has been driving me crazy for years. The fact that the new administration has added several good tacklers to our DB has my enthusiastic approval.

As you pointed out, more pressure on the QB would help our DB's a ton. Like you, I'd love to get a talented edge rusher in the draft. Fowler would fill the bill, IMHO.

I'm not saying he's Revis but wasn't Revis cast off to the Bum Island while in Tampa? Some guys can't play that Tampa 2 System. It's just how it is. I like the move. He plays with an attitude and is physical. Even though he's caught a fine or two, hopefully it doesn't continue here. Hopefully it spreads to the rest of the defense. Mighty McCloughan of The Clan McClloughan is doing pretty good so far.

If we make the playoffs, I think there ought to be a contingent of fans in Redskins jerseys and kilts with blue Braveheart facepaint shouting "Clan McCloughan." The Funbunch, the Smurfs, the Hogs, the Dirtbags, and now the Clan. Would be hilarious.

Guys you have to realize that we have a lot of experts on this site..to listen to some of them you would believe they were GM's at one point..the move was a good move..end of story..to argue this point proves you know nothing about football..What really scares me is using a top draft pick on a player that has never played in the NFL and expect that to work out every time. A proven NFL player that has reached pro bowl level in his career to replace some of the worse DB play i ever saw last year..yea right on guys ! we should have just sat still and did nothing ..The truth is no matter what the redskins do you will always have the experts doubt it..

A lot of 6th & 7th round guys dont make rosters, even if we get just 1 year from him, it was a solid deal.

Tom Brady was drafted in the sixth round. If we miss out on the next Tom Brady because we lost our six round pick on this trade so help me....[sarcasm]
