In other words, he doesn’t want to select a player at an area they don’t have an immediate hole. Like receiver, for example. There is no doubt that West Virginia’s Kevin White and Alabama’s Amari Cooper are two of the best players in the draft. Both could help Washington, giving them two players who can hurt teams after the run, and both are considered excellent workers. But though receiver might be a need a year from now (maybe not), what the Redskins need there now is depth. That can be found in the middle rounds. If they are far and away the best? That’s one thing. But in the first round McCloughan likes to draft best player -- at area of need. That’s not a 100 percent rule, but it is a general one.

What McCloughan will want is someone who can contribute in a big way immediately. Again, if they stay at No. 5, that likely means one of the edge rushers. If they trade back, there are good options along the offensive line for immediate contributors.
