also, technically he won his case on appeal since the victim didn't testify at the appeal, which is a thing you have to do in that state.

anyways, that's the less jaded/reactionary response.
A defendant has a right to appeal a conviction in Domestic relations court (lower court) to Circuit court (higher court) in Virginia too.

The appeal here is de novo or as if the original conviction never happened.

In Virginia, a person isn't entitled to a jury trial in lower court but is in Circuit court. I read in an article that was the case in NC as well but I'm not certain.

A civil settlement would not affect a prosecutor's ability to subpoena the victim to testify in a criminal case.

Re: All things off season 2015.

Today is the last day to sign long term deals for those with the Franchise tags. Looks like Dez is going to miss some camp/games according to him.

@DezBryant

As much as I love football...on my beautiful babies.. I apologize #cowboynation but I will not be there if no deal #fact

@MikeKlis

Demaryius Thomas expected to miss training camp/preseason if no longterm agreement reached today: Broncos and Demaryius need final-hour compromise via @9News #9news

Lots of reports saying he and D. Thomas want Calvin Johnson type money, but I don't see it happening. In fact, Calvin Johnson shouldn't have gotten that contract he got. You don't pay WRs that kind of money, no matter how good they are.

People are severely overpaying for talent.

@AdamSchefter

KC's Justin Houston signed a 6-year, $101M deal that includes $52.5M GTD, richest Chiefs' deal in history, richest LB deal in NFL history.

As great a player as Johnson is, Det. hasn't won ONE playoff game since he's been there. We can even look here at Jackson, he didn't actually make the team better even though he put up numbers. WR's just don't impact the game enough to be paid 16 million a year.

That 52 million is probably spread out over 4 years perhaps? That's around 12 or 13 million per year? To me he may be a little overpaid but that's fine for them. They're not paying a ton of money at QB so they can pay out a little more to one of the best pass rushers in the NFL.

Re: All things off season 2015.

i think Dez' tweet was a beautifully played PR move. he kept it to 1 tweet and in 24 words managed to:

1. state his love of the game (desire to be the best, not just highest paid);
2. endeared himself to any parent by reminding everyone he has kids that he loves;
3. endeared himself to boys fans by apologizing letting them know he wishes things were diff but it is out of his control;
4. clearly and unequivocally stated his intention (no deal, no dez).

beauty in simplicity. im starting to think dez is a deeper river then i originally imagined.

I don't think these guys should get Calvin Johnson type money, but at the same time their respective teams are going to do anything and everything to get them for the cheapest amount of money.

In a normal situation, you'd have some agreement in the middle; however, the franchise tag, gives teams a huge advantage in their negotiation. I know people's initial reaction is to side with the team. But it sucks to be them, because the franchise tag doesn't help them with their negotiation.

At the end of the day, they'll either need to take the franchise tag (paid on a weekly basis and not guaranteed), take a very team friendly deal, or hold out.

The problem is that the cap is going to be going up significantly each year. It may be an overpayment this year, but in two years, it could be a pretty good contract for the team. By the time its over, that contract could be a steal if his play stays where its at.

Thats one of the problems with talking about contracts now compared to in the past. We didnt have the cap going crazy like it is now.

Huh?? Won't both make 11 million next year by signing the tag? That's a huge raise over what they're making right now. That money alone can last a lifetime if it's managed right. Sucks to be them.

These are the rules and how they were set. Yeah they want guaranteed money but if they don't like it then get a 9-5. Would you give Dez Bryant a ton of money and not have something in there to protect yourself? We're talking about a guy who beat up his mom.
