How would you justify firing a coach that went 8-7-1 that year? If you fire a coach McVay liked and admired what makes you think he would have taken the job?

Since when has Snyder ever justified firing anyone?

In this case, he would have been firing a perpetually mediocre coach for the prospect of someone truly special.

And they should do something as simple as ask McVay if he would have taken the job. Offer to make Jay his OC if he wanted it. It would be hard to feel sorry for an OC making 5m a year.

This isn't a clear cut screw up because of the factors that Keim laid out in the article but it is indicative of being short sighted and willing to settle for the sure mediocre thing.

Another way to look at it would be how hot of a HC candidate would Jay have been if he was fired then, or now for instance?
