Yeah I don't recall exactly where but I heard an interview of Jason Wright were he half admitted that they were betting on people being more inclined to accept the new name after so much time, and you could almost hear him think "woops, that doesn't work if you say it outloud"

At the beginning of all this I think the org was genuinely caught with their pants down and clearly did not have any sort of a contingency plan in place for a name change. A two year process to rebrand a major sports franchise really isn't that unreasonable. Better to take your time and get it right. Imagine if they had immediately gone with Warriors only to continue to face backlash from NA groups.

2 years is not unreasonable AS LONG as they get it right. Not the specific name choice but the rollout, branding/logos, marketing, internet registrations, etc.

I want to believe they are being systematic, dotting their i's and crossing their t's. But how hard would it be to believe that at the end of the process, Snyder steps in and muddies the waters.

The one thing that is true is this name whatever it will be needs to be non-reactive and last the test of current politics and long time quality.

Agreed. It came out of nowhere. And then all the sleazy revelations from the front office came out as well. Ashburn was suddenly caught in a multi-front war. Better to take their time.

Found it: ITW starts at 3:10, the bit about name change and time effect at 9:54 (listen to the following 3mins, he stirs away from it but at some point he's talking about the longer and the more thorough the process is, the more people can get onboard)

I don't see how you can watch this video and think it will be anything but RedWolves

I did think the video itself was very well done.



Points of note to me:
1) they have a fan say "I like that we didn't just rush into some generic name" Keeping WFT would be like, nope we took 2 years to pick a generic name, they did also keep in a fan that said - "I like Washington Football Team i don't care what anyone says" note - she also liked RedWolves and howled
2) they had all the fans shown Howl (one point against RW because they did keep in the part with the baby crying at the howl)
3) 3 of the logos were Wolf based
4) The only logo I actually liked was the one with the monuments - and they did have that get the best fan response.

I think the 3 contenders right now are RedWolves, Commanders and Washington Football Team

Basically what was done to Edmonton was the same thing that happened here. One of their main sponsors were going to back out if they kept the name. I mean how in the world is an Eskimo racist? WTF kind of world do we live in now? New new Edmonton Elks. What a joke.

I want WFT as it works well for those that are going to call them the Redskins no matter what anyone else calls them.

RedWolves works well with the Redskins diehards too. There are lots of subtle ways to pay homage to the Redskins legacy with Wolf imagery without directly tying the two together.

In fact as the crowds move on to the latest pc problem you can bring back some level of merging the two.

Obviously not in the immediate future but picture something like the attached image with Sammy Baugh and Chase Young.

I came here to post exactly your points 1) and 2).

IMO WFT is 95% out, they can not afford to look that stupid. How lame would their amazing and thorough process look if it didn't come up with anything better than the temporary generic name found in 2 weeks...

I think the howling part says a lot, you can see how, on top of being a fun way to bring people together, it'll also be a great way to get fans fired up and implicated in the game. We've lacked that for years.
