Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins

The name being chosen by now makes sense. February isn't very far away.

Sheehan and some others have been saying it for a while now that the name has already been picked.

JP Thinks its Commanders and He's usually pretty damn accurate. Could they keep the W with that tho?

Cleveland kept it under wraps until Guardians was announced. It's not an impossible thing to do.

A few others on Twitter that are pretty dialed in to the team have also been saying Commanders for a while now.

Washington Commanders is a solid team name. But a rather long name when including both words.

Definitely better than 95% of the other names I've heard. I would have zero complaints with that name.

If that is the case eventually I'll accept it but right now it feels weak to me.

This is the way now though. Sport teams can't be named after certain things anymore, it's gotta be something generic and non-offensive. Kraken is the only name to come out in the last several years that bucks that trend imo.

Still, a winning record and tough team to play will go a long way in helping us accept the name. If they are called Commanders and we get our asses beat every other week it will be one more thing to rip on Dan for around the league.

Commanders is ok, I like Commandos better, but alas that is not the choice.

Commanders seems like it will have to be forced when it comes to the imagery and mascot. I can see it working in the DMV but it is also awfully militaristic, but maybe that's not an issue?

Definitely makes sense. I'm not sure if it's an educated guess or a news from Sheehan though.

Ok now the WFT is trying to clarify Tanya Snyder's comments on 8 name finalists - per
@AdamSchefter
- "the list of eight names is a selection of names that were highlighted in their Making the Brand video, not a final list of potential name candidates."

So basically back to what Jason said, down to three names that are not necessarily on the list of 8..... probably should just delete the last 4 pages
Yeah, honestly when you think about it, it would be pretty damn stupid on their part to give out ALL their final 8 candidate in a twitter video.

My bad, listening to his latest pod episode right now, he says from a source.

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins

How they should handle it is just shut up and don't say anything. They're trying to string along the fans and create a buzz and it's kinda drained itself out. I really don't even care at this point. The name change is dead to me.

I think that is part of their goal. It is like putting out the ashes of the fire, you have to get it completely out or it will reignite. In this case I am talking about reigniting passion around Redskins.

Agreed. Weirdly enough I think both can be true:
-they want to create expectations and anticipation about the new name so when it's released it's talked about.
-they are consciously making it last longer than needed, so people get tired of it and even the most adamant anti-name change and those who had a strong preference different than their final choice go "meh, at least we finally have a new name and can move on" and accept it (to various degrees and after various amounts of time).
