I mean I don't mind, but I was never offended, but it seems like on one hand we are not talking about native Americans but on some alternate Sundays we are back to representing them again? I mean...it this just a test drive to see if people freak out again? I mean I think Tuddy is awesome and all, but there is nothing/no one as respected as a native American chief in all his glory.

Playing halfway is what they are doing, it must be a transition of identity or something

I thought if they went warriors or commanders, we'd change to cammo and put a jet fighter or tank on our helmets and have a whole section of armed forces in uniform for free at every game and honor military at the half or something.

If commanders really "means" redskins, without "saying" redskins, I guess I get it, but then let's get rid of Tuddy and replace him with something related to the spear, not a dumbass pig with a military helmet. I mean how could you say redskins in another way? I have always been a warriors fan for that reason, plus you keep the w, which I actually have gotten used to.

Another point, it is the chiefs who play in arrowhead stadium, yet the arrowhead is on our helmet. I know I know, the 60s we had em. But we also had really cool gold helmets with the R based on Green Bay.

On a positive, the uniforms are fine, like the helmet triple stripe and gold cage.

My issue is the lack of team identity, what the hell is a commander?

Ask a 5 year old to draw a picture....they will draw Tuddy, arg
They spent last year building the Roman/Spartan version of the spear into the identity. I am good with that direction, and like Matty said, I think it comes to completion in the new stadium.

Re: New Unis

They're definitely leaning into the whole warrior/gladiator thing, nothing NA related is mentioned in any of the press about the new spear logo.

I agree with that. And I really do like the numbers and the bold borders that make them pop. I hadn't noticed the gold pants are back -- you only can see that when they show the design, not photos of players in actual uniforms, and I really like the gold pants (and would always prefer that to the all whites). It's a little hard to tell, but the helmets look a shade lighter than the burgundy jerseys; I hope I am wrong there. But overall, I am good with the unis. I cannot imagine anyone would say that they're not an improvement over what we just had last season (the white jersey's are not good, and the black never grew on me -- this black set is hands down better).

I'm with you on that -- the mascot doesn't seem to match the commander name all that well.

Re: New Unis

One improvement they adopted was the removal of the Commanders name from the uniforms. They do show the word on the back of the alternate, but looks like that is a place holder in the spot the player's name goes.

Re: New Unis

Junkies mentioned that Florida St. has rights to the full spear and that might be a reason why we didn’t use the full spear.

I doubt that. A spear is pretty generic and there would be little to no likelihood of any confusion between the brands (touchstone for trademark infringement). Plus, we’ve used it in the past. I think it was more a matter of trying to merge past and present.

Internet suggests it is copyright of the university. While we retained rights extant when it was originally used before that, as it was subsequently copyrighted we surrendered rights to use the logo if e wanted to use it again. Nothing definitive anywhere as there has been no legal challenge, but they do own it.

I doubt there is a sufficient quantum of creative expression for a spear -- without more -- to be eligible for copyright protection. A trademark may be a different story, but there one would have to show a likelihood of confusion, and that seems unlikely given the obviously differences between the NFL and college football. The Internet says lots of things, and many of them are dead wrong. This is one of them.

Spear is a copyrighted logo. I suspect the team wasn't prepared to spend the time and money on court to argue our spear is not the same as or similar enough to their spear. *♂️

Actually, no it isn't -- at the risk of being be pedantic here (I am an intellectual property litigator, as it turns out), those are trademarks, not copyrights. And for trademarks, there has to be a likelihood of consumer confusion for infringement -- that's the standard (see https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/basics/what-trademark; https://www.uspto.gov/page/about-trademark-infringement) -- and it wouldn't apply here as the spear the Commanders are using and in the context in which they're using it (i.e., an NFL team) would not likely cause someone to mix up the two. FSU is not going to be able to block every use of a spear logo by a team -- only those that create the likelihood of confusion. And generally speaking, companies will do trademark clearance work to make sure that they're not going to have issues when they roll out their marketing materials, logos, etc.

Anyway, back to the uniform discussion, I noticed that there are a bunch of teams that rolled out new unis so far this spring -- Rams, Falcons, Titans, and Ravens did too. And all of them seem like cleaner, slightly updated versions of throwback uniforms (with the exception of the Ravens) -- interesting trend that I tend to like.
